Douai-Rheims Le Sainte Bible Vigouroux
And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he passed from thence, to teach and preach in their cities.1 Il arriva que, lorsque Jésus eut achevé de donner Ses instructions à Ses douze disciples, Il partit de là, pour enseigner et prêcher dans les villes.
Now when John had heard in prison the works of Christ: sending two of his disciples he said to him:2 Or Jean, ayant appris dans sa prison les oeuvres du Christ, envoya deux de ses disciples
Art thou he that art to come, or look we for another?3 Lui dire: Etes-Vous Celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?
And Jesus making answer said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen.4 Jésus leur répondit et dit: Allez raconter à Jean ce que vous avez entendu et ce que vous avez vu.
The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor have the gospel preached to them.5 Les aveugles voient, les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont guéris, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, les pauvres sont évangélisés.
And blessed is he that shall not be scandalized in me.6 Et bienheureux est celui pour qui Je ne serai pas une occasion de scandale.
And when they went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What went you out into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind?7 Lorsqu'ils s'en allaient, Jésus Se mit à dire aux foules, au sujet de Jean: Qu'êtes-vous allés voir dans le désert? Un roseau agité par le vent?
But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are clothed in soft garments, are in the houses of kings.8 Mais qu'êtes-vous allés voir?
But what went you out to see? a prophet? yea I tell you, and more than a prophet.9 Qu'êtes-vous donc allés voir?
For this is he of whom it is written: Behold I send my angel before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.10 Car c'est de lui qu'il a été écrit: Voici que devant Ta face J'envoie Mon Ange, qui préparera la voie devant Toi.
Amen I say to you, there hath not risen among them that are born of women a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is the lesser in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.11 En vérité, Je vous le dis, parmi les enfants des femmes, il n'en a pas surgi de plus grand que Jean-Baptiste; mais celui qui est le plus petit dans le royaume des Cieux est plus grand que lui.
And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away.12 Or, depuis les jours de Jean-Baptiste jusqu'à maintenant, le royaume des Cieux se prend par violence, et ce sont les violents qui s'en emparent.
For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John:13 Car tous les prophètes et la loi ont prophétisé jusqu'à Jean ;
And if you will receive it, he is Elias that is to come.14 et si vous voulez comprendre, il est lui-même cet Elie qui doit venir.
He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.15 Que celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre, entende.
But whereunto shall I esteem this generation to be like? It is like to children sitting in the market place.16 Mais à qui comparerai-Je cette génération?
Who crying to their companions say: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have lamented, and you have not mourned.17 leur disent: Nous avons chanté pour vous, et vous n'avez pas dansé; nous avons poussé des lamentations, et vous n'avez pas pleuré.
For John came neither eating nor drinking; and they say: He hath a devil.18 Car Jean est venu, ne mangeant ni ne buvant, et ils disent: Il est possédé du démon.
The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners.
Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein were done the most of his miracles, for that they had not done penance.20 Alors Il Se mit à adresser des reproches aux villes dans lesquelles avaient été opérés beaucoup de Ses miracles, parce qu'elles n'avaient pas fait pénitence.
Woe to thee, Corozain, woe to thee, Bethsaida: for if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in you, they had long ago done penance in sackcloth and ashes.21 Malheur à toi, Corozaïn; malheur à toi, Bethsaïda; car si les miracles qui ont été faits au milieu de vous avaient été faits dans Tyr et dans Sidon, il y a longtemps qu'elles auraient fait pénitence dans le sac et la cendre.
But I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment, than for you.22 C'est pourquoi, Je vous le dis, au jour du jugement Tyr et Sidon seront traitées moins rigoureusement que vous.
And thou Capharnaum, shalt thou be exalted up to heaven? thou shalt go down even unto hell. For if in Sodom had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in thee, perhaps it had remained unto this day.23 Et toi, Capharnaüm, t'élèveras-tu jusqu'au ciel?
But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.24 C'est pourquoi, Je vous le dis, au jour du jugement le pays de Sodome sera traité moins vigoureusement que toi.
At that time Jesus answered and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to the little ones.25 En ce temps-là, Jésus prit la parole et dit : Je Vous rends grâce, Père, Seigneur du Ciel et de la terre, de ce que Vous avez caché ces choses aux sages et aux prudents, et de ce que Vous les avez révélées aux petits.
Yea, Father; for so hath it seemed good in thy sight.26 Oui, Père, Je Vous rends grâce parce qu'il Vous a plu ainsi.
All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knoweth the Son, but the Father: neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him.27 Toutes choses M'ont été données par Mon Père.
Come to me, all you that labour, and are burdened, and I will refresh you.28 Venez à Moi, vous tous qui êtes fatigués et qui êtes chargés, et Je vous soulagerai.
Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls.29 Prenez Mon joug sur vous, et recevez Mes leçons, parce que Je suis doux et humble de coeur, et vous trouverez le repos de vos âmes.
For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.30 Car Mon joug est doux, et Mon fardeau léger.
