Matthew 11

1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he passed from thence, to teach and preach in their cities.	1 Et il advint, quand Jésus eut achevé de donner ces consignes à ses douze disciples, qu'il partit delà pour enseigner et prêcher dans leurs villes.
2 Now when John had heard in prison the works of Christ: sending two of his disciples he said to him:	2 Or Jean, dans sa prison, avait entendu parler des oeuvres du Christ. Il lui envoya de ses disciplespour lui dire:
3 Art thou he that art to come, or look we for another?	3 "Es-tu celui qui doit venir ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?"
4 And Jesus making answer said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen.	4 Jésus leur répondit: "Allez rapporter à Jean ce que vous entendez et voyez:
5 The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor have the gospel preached to them.	5 les aveugles voient et les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont purifiés et les sourds entendent, lesmorts ressuscitent et la Bonne Nouvelle est annoncée aux pauvres;
6 And blessed is he that shall not be scandalized in me.	6 et heureux celui qui ne trébuchera pas à cause de moi!"
7 And when they went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What went you out into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind?	7 Tandis que ceux-là s'en allaient, Jésus se mit à dire aux foules au sujet de Jean: "Qu'êtes-vousallés contempler au désert? Un roseau agité par le vent?
8 But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are clothed in soft garments, are in the houses of kings.	8 Alors qu'êtes-vous allés voir? Un homme vêtu de façon délicate? Mais ceux qui portent des habitsdélicats se trouvent dans les demeures des rois.
9 But what went you out to see? a prophet? yea I tell you, and more than a prophet.	9 Alors qu'êtes-vous allés faire? Voir un prophète? Oui, je vous le dis, et plus qu'un prophète.
10 For this is he of whom it is written: Behold I send my angel before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.	10 C'est celui dont il est écrit: Voici que moi j'envoie mon messager en avant de toi pour préparerta route devant toi.
11 Amen I say to you, there hath not risen among them that are born of women a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is the lesser in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.	11 "En vérité je vous le dis, parmi les enfants des femmes, il n'en a pas surgi de plus grand que Jeanle Baptiste; et cependant le plus petit dans le Royaume des Cieux est plus grand que lui.
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away.	12 Depuis les jours de Jean le Baptiste jusqu'à présent le Royaume des Cieux souffre violence, etdes violents s'en emparent.
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John:	13 Tous les prophètes en effet, ainsi que la Loi, ont mené leurs prophéties jusqu'à Jean.
14 And if you will receive it, he is Elias that is to come.	14 Et lui, si vous voulez m'en croire, il est cet Elie qui doit revenir.
15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.	15 Que celui qui a des oreilles entende!
16 But whereunto shall I esteem this generation to be like? It is like to children sitting in the market place.	16 "Mais à qui vais-je comparer cette génération? Elle ressemble à des gamins qui, assis sur lesplaces, en interpellent d'autres,
17 Who crying to their companions say: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have lamented, and you have not mourned.	17 en disant: Nous vous avons joué de la flûte, et vous n'avez pas dansé! Nous avons entonné unchant funèbre, et vous ne vous êtes pas frappé la poitrine!
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking; and they say: He hath a devil.	18 Jean vient en effet, ne mangeant ni ne buvant, et l'on dit: Il est possédé!
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners. And wisdom is justified by her children.	19 Vient le Fils de l'homme, mangeant et buvant, et l'on dit: Voilà un glouton et un ivrogne, un amides publicains et des pécheurs! Et justice a été rendue à la Sagesse par ses oeuvres."
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein were done the most of his miracles, for that they had not done penance.	20 Alors il se mit à invectiver contre les villes qui avaient vu ses plus nombreux miracles maisn'avaient pas fait pénitence.
21 Woe to thee, Corozain, woe to thee, Bethsaida: for if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in you, they had long ago done penance in sackcloth and ashes.	21 "Malheur à toi, Chorazeïn! Malheur à toi, Bethsaïde! Car si les miracles qui ont eu lieu chezvous avaient eu lieu à Tyr et à Sidon, il y a longtemps que, sous le sac et dans la cendre, elles se seraientrepenties.
22 But I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment, than for you.	22 Aussi bien, je vous le dis, pour Tyr et Sidon, au Jour du Jugement, il y aura moins de rigueurque pour vous.
23 And thou Capharnaum, shalt thou be exalted up to heaven? thou shalt go down even unto hell. For if in Sodom had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in thee, perhaps it had remained unto this day.	23 Et toi, Capharnaüm, crois-tu que tu seras élevée jusqu'au ciel? Jusqu'à l'Hadès tu descendras.Car si les miracles qui ont eu lieu chez toi avaient eu lieu à Sodome, elle subsisterait encore aujourd'hui.
24 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.	24 Aussi bien, je vous le dis, pour le pays de Sodome il y aura moins de rigueur, au Jour duJugement, que pour toi."
25 At that time Jesus answered and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to the little ones.	25 En ce temps-là Jésus prit la parole et dit: "Je te bénis, Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre,d'avoir caché cela aux sages et aux intelligents et de l'avoir révélé aux tout-petits.
26 Yea, Father; for so hath it seemed good in thy sight.	26 Oui, Père, car tel a été ton bon plaisir.
27 All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knoweth the Son, but the Father: neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him.	27 Tout m'a été remis par mon Père, et nul ne connaît le Fils si ce n'est le Père, et nul ne connaît lePère si ce n'est le Fils, et celui à qui le Fils veut bien le révéler.
28 Come to me, all you that labour, and are burdened, and I will refresh you.	28 "Venez à moi, vous tous qui peinez et ployez sous le fardeau, et moi je vous soulagerai.
29 Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls.	29 Chargez-vous de mon joug et mettez-vous à mon école, car je suis doux et humble de coeur, etvous trouverez soulagement pour vos âmes.
30 For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.	30 Oui, mon joug est aisé et mon fardeau léger."
