The parables of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel.1 Proverbios de Salomón, hijo de David, rey de Israel:
To know wisdom, and instruction:2 Para aprender sabiduría y doctrina, | para entender sentencias inteligentes,
To understand the words of prudence: and to receive the instruction of doctrine, justice, and judgment, and equity:3 para adquirir disciplina y sensatez, | derecho, justicia y rectitud;
To give subtilty to little ones, to the young man knowledge and understanding.4 para enseñar sagacidad al inexperto, | saber y reflexión al muchacho
A wise man shall hear and shall be wiser: and he that understandeth, shall possess governments.5 (lo escucha el sensato y aumenta su saber, | el prudente adquiere habilidad);
He shall understand a parable, and the interpretation, the words of the wise, and their mysterious sayings.6 para entender proverbios y dichos, | sentencias de sabios y enigmas.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Fools despise wisdom and instruction.7 El comienzo de la sabiduría es el temor del Señor, | los necios desprecian la sabiduría y la disciplina.
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother :8 Escucha, hijo mío, los consejos de tu padre, | no rechaces la instrucción de tu madre:
That grace may be added to thy head, and a chain of gold to thy neck.9 pues serán diadema en tu cabeza, | como una gargantilla en tu cuello.
My son, if sinners shall entice thee, consent not to them.10 Hijo mío, no te dejes seducir, | no accedas a gente sin escrúpulos.
If they shall say: Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us hide snares for the innocent without cause:11 Si te dicen: «Ven con nosotros, | preparemos emboscadas mortales, | acechemos sin motivo al honrado;
Let us swallow him up alive like hell, and whole as one that goeth down into the pit.12 lo tragaremos vivo, como el Abismo, | entero, como quien baja a la tumba;
We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoils.13 nos haremos con grandes riquezas, | llenaremos de botín nuestra casa;
Cast in thy lot with us, let us all have one purse.14 comparte tu suerte con nosotros, | haremos bolsa común».
My son, walk not thou with them, restrain thy foot from their paths.15 Tú, hijo mío, no sigas su camino, | aparta tus pies de su senda,
For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.16 pues sus pies corren tras el mal, | se apresuran a derramar sangre.
But a net is spread in vain before the eyes of them that have wings.17 Mas en vano se ponen redes | cuando son vistas por las aves.
And they themselves lie in wait for their own blood, and practise deceits against their own souls.18 Sus emboscadas les resultarán mortales, | atentarán contra su propia vida.
So the wage of every covetous man destroy the souls of the possessors.19 Este es el fin de los codiciosos: | los mata su propia codicia.
Wisdom preacheth abroad, she uttereth her voice in the streets:20 La sabiduría pregona por las calles, | en las plazas levanta la voz;
At the head of multitudes she crieth out, in the entrance of the gates of the city she uttereth her words, saying:21 grita en lugares concurridos, | en la plaza pública proclama:
O children, how long will you love childishness, and fools covet those things which are hurtful to themselves, and the unwise hate knowledge?22 «¿Hasta cuándo, ignorantes, amaréis la ignorancia, | y vosotros, insolentes, recaeréis en la insolencia, | y vosotros, necios, rechazaréis el saber?
Turn ye at my reproof: behold I will utter my spirit to you, and will shew you my words.23 Prestad atención a mis razones, | derramaré mi espíritu sobre vosotros, | quiero comunicaros mis palabras.
Because I called, and you refused: I stretched out my hand, and there was none that regarded.24 Os llamé, y vosotros rehusasteis; | extendí mi mano y la rechazasteis;
You have despised all my counsel, and have neglected my reprehensions.25 despreciasteis mis consejos, | no aceptasteis mis advertencias.
I also will laugh in your destruction, and will mock when that shall come to you which you feared.26 Pues bien, yo me reiré de vuestra desgracia, | me burlaré cuando os alcance el terror.
When sudden calamity shall fall on you, and destruction, as a tempest, shall be at hand: when tribulation and distress shall come upon you:27 Cuando os alcance como tormenta el terror, | cuando os llegue como huracán la desgracia, | cuando os alcancen la angustia y la aflicción,
Then shall they call upon me, and I will not hear: they shall rise in the morning and shall not find me:28 me llamaréis, pero no os escucharé; | me buscaréis, pero no me encontraréis.
Because they have hated instruction and received not the fear of the Lord,29 Por haber menospreciado el saber | y no querer temer al Señor,
Nor consented to my counsel, but despised all my reproof.30 por no aceptar mis consejos | y despreciar mis reprensiones,
Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, and shall be filled with their own devices.31 comerán el fruto de su conducta, | se hartarán de los planes que hicieron.
The turning away of little ones shall kill them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.32 La indisciplina matará a los irreflexivos, | la indolencia acabará con los necios;
But he that shall hear me, shall rest without terror, and shall enjoy abundance, without fear of evils.33 mas quien me escucha vivirá tranquilo, | seguro y sin temor a la desgracia».
