Tobit 8

1 And after they had supped, they brought in the young man to her.	1 When they had finished eating, they escorted Tobias in to her.
2 And Tobias remembering the angel's word, took out of his bag part of the liver, and laid it upon burning coals.	2 As he went he remembered the words of Raphael, and he took the live ashes of incense and put the heart and liver of the fish upon them and made a smoke.
3 Then the angel Raphael took the devil, and bound him in the desert of upper Egypt.	3 And when the demon smelled the odor he fled to the remotest parts of Egypt, and the angel bound him.
4 Then Tobias exhorted the virgin, and said to her: Sara, arise, and let us pray to God to day, and to morrow, and the next day: because for these three nights we are joined to God: and when the third night is over, we will be in our own wedlock.	4 When the door was shut and the two were alone, Tobias got up from the bed and said, "Sister, get up, and let us pray that the Lord may have mercy upon us."
5 For we are the children of saints, and we must not be joined together like heathens that know not God.	5 And Tobias began to pray, "Blessed art thou, O God of our fathers, and blessed by thy holy and glorious name for ever. Let the heavens and all thy creatures bless thee.
6 So they both arose, and prayed earnestly both together that health might be given them,	6 Thou madest Adam and gavest him Eve his wife as a helper and support. From them the race of mankind has sprung. Thou didst say, 'It is not good that the man should be alone; let us make a helper for him like himself.'
7 And Tobias said: Lord God of our father, may the heavens and the earth, and the sea, and the fountains, and the rivers, and all thy creatures that are in them, bless thee.	7 And now, O Lord, I am not taking this sister of mine because of lust, but with sincerity. Grant that I may find mercy and may grow old together with her."
8 Thou madest Adam of the slime of the earth, and gavest him Eve for a helper.	8 And she said with him, "Amen."
9 And now, Lord, thou knowest, that not for fleshly lust do I take my sister to wife, but only for the love of posterity, in which thy name may be blessed for ever and ever.	9 Then they both went to sleep for the night. But Raguel arose and went and dug a grave,
10 Sara also said: Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us, and let us grow old both together in health.	10 with the thought, "Perhaps he too will die."
11 And it came to pass about the cockcrowing, Raguel ordered his servants to be called for, and they went with him together to dig a grave.	11 Then Raguel went into his house
12 For he said: Lest perhaps it may have happened to him, in like manner as it did to the other seven husbands, that went in unto her.	12 and said to his wife Edna, "Send one of the maids to see whether he is alive; and if he is not, let us bury him without any one knowing about it."
13 And when they had prepared the pit, Raguel went back to his wife, and said to her:	13 So the maid opened the door and went in, and found them both asleep.
14 Send one of thy maids, and let her see if he be dead, that I may bury him before it be day.	14 And she came out and told them that he was alive.
15 So she sent one of her maidservants, who went into the chamber, and found them safe and sound, sleeping both together.	15 Then Raguel blessed God and said, "Blessed art thou, O God, with every pure and holy blessing. Let thy saints and all thy creatures bless thee; let all thy angels and thy chosen people bless thee for ever.
16 And returning she brought the good news: and Raguel and Anna his wife blessed the Lord,	16 Blessed art thou, because thou hast made me glad. It has not happened to me as I expected; but thou hast treated us according to thy great mercy.
17 And said: We bless thee, O Lord God of Israel, because it hath not happened as we suspected.	17 Blessed art thou, because thou hast had compassion on two only children. Show them mercy, O Lord; and bring their lives to fulfilment in health and happiness and mercy."
18 For thou hast shewn thy mercy to us, and hast shut out from us the enemy that persecuted us.	18 Then he ordered his servants to fill in the grave.
19 And thou hast taken pity upon two only children. Make them, O Lord, bless thee more fully: and to offer up to thee a sacrifice of thy praise, and of their health, that all nations may know, that thou alone art God in all the earth.	19 After this he gave a wedding feast for them which lasted fourteen days.
20 And immediately Raguel commanded his servants, to fill up the pit they had made, before it was day.	20 And before the days of the feast were over, Raguel declared by oath to Tobias that he should not leave until the fourteen days of the wedding feast were ended,
21 And he spoke to his wife to make ready a feast, and prepare all kind of provisions that are necessary for such as go a journey.	21 that then he should take half of Raguel's property and return in safety to his father, and that the rest would be his "when my wife and I die."
22 He caused also two fat kine, and four wethers to be killed, and a banquet to be prepared for all his neighbours, and all his friends.
23 And Raguel adjured Tobias, to abide with him two weeks.
24 And of all things which Raguel possessed, he gave one half to Tobias, and made him a writing, that the half that remained should after their decease come also to Tobias.
