Tobit 8

1 And after they had supped, they brought in the young man to her.	1 When they had finished eating and drinking and it seemed time to go to bed, the young man was takenfrom the dining room to the bedroom.
2 And Tobias remembering the angel's word, took out of his bag part of the liver, and laid it upon burning coals.	2 Tobias remembered Raphael's advice; he went to his bag, took the fish's heart and liver out of it and putsome on the burning incense.
3 Then the angel Raphael took the devil, and bound him in the desert of upper Egypt.	3 The reek of the fish distressed the demon, who fled through the air to Egypt. Raphael pursued himthere, shackled him and strangled him forthwith.
4 Then Tobias exhorted the virgin, and said to her: Sara, arise, and let us pray to God to day, and to morrow, and the next day: because for these three nights we are joined to God: and when the third night is over, we will be in our own wedlock.	4 The parents meanwhile had gone out and shut the door behind them. Tobias rose from the bed, andsaid to Sarah, 'Get up, my sister! You and I must pray and petition our Lord to win his grace and his protection.'
5 For we are the children of saints, and we must not be joined together like heathens that know not God.	5 She stood up, and they began praying for protection, and this was how he began: You are blessed, OGod of our fathers; blessed too is your name for ever and ever. Let the heavens bless you and al things youhave made for evermore.
6 So they both arose, and prayed earnestly both together that health might be given them,	6 You it was who created Adam, you who created Eve his wife to be his help and support; and from thesetwo the human race was born. You it was who said, 'It is not right that the man should be alone; let us make hima helper like him.'
7 And Tobias said: Lord God of our father, may the heavens and the earth, and the sea, and the fountains, and the rivers, and all thy creatures that are in them, bless thee.	7 And so I take my sister not for any lustful motive, but I do it in singleness of heart. Be kind enough tohave pity on her and on me and bring us to old age together.
8 Thou madest Adam of the slime of the earth, and gavest him Eve for a helper.	8 And together they said, 'Amen, Amen,'
9 And now, Lord, thou knowest, that not for fleshly lust do I take my sister to wife, but only for the love of posterity, in which thy name may be blessed for ever and ever.	9 and lay down for the night. But Raguel rose and cal ed his servants, who came and helped him dig agrave.
10 Sara also said: Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us, and let us grow old both together in health.	10 He had thought, 'Heaven grant he does not die! We should be overwhelmed with ridicule and shame.'
11 And it came to pass about the cockcrowing, Raguel ordered his servants to be called for, and they went with him together to dig a grave.	11 When the grave was ready, Raguel went back to the house, called his wife
12 For he said: Lest perhaps it may have happened to him, in like manner as it did to the other seven husbands, that went in unto her.	12 and said, 'Will you send a maid to the room to see if Tobias is stil alive? For if he is dead, we may beable to bury him without anyone else knowing.'
13 And when they had prepared the pit, Raguel went back to his wife, and said to her:	13 They sent the maid, lit the lamp, opened the door and the maid went in. She found the two fast asleeptogether;
14 Send one of thy maids, and let her see if he be dead, that I may bury him before it be day.	14 she came out again and whispered, 'He is not dead; al is wel .'
15 So she sent one of her maidservants, who went into the chamber, and found them safe and sound, sleeping both together.	15 Then Raguel blessed the God of heaven with these words: You are blessed, my God, with everyblessing that is pure; may you be blessed for evermore!
16 And returning she brought the good news: and Raguel and Anna his wife blessed the Lord,	16 You are blessed for having made me glad. What I feared has not happened, instead you have shownus your boundless mercy.
17 And said: We bless thee, O Lord God of Israel, because it hath not happened as we suspected.	17 You are blessed for taking pity on this only son, this only daughter. Grant them, Master, your mercyand your protection; let them live out their lives in happiness and in mercy.
18 For thou hast shewn thy mercy to us, and hast shut out from us the enemy that persecuted us.	18 And he made his servants fil the grave in before dawn broke.
19 And thou hast taken pity upon two only children. Make them, O Lord, bless thee more fully: and to offer up to thee a sacrifice of thy praise, and of their health, that all nations may know, that thou alone art God in all the earth.	19 He told his wife to make an ovenful of bread; he went to his flock, brought back two oxen and foursheep and gave orders for them to be cooked; and preparations began.
20 And immediately Raguel commanded his servants, to fill up the pit they had made, before it was day.	20 He called Tobias and said, 'I wil not hear of your leaving here for a fortnight. You are to stay whereyou are, eating and drinking, with me. You wil make my daughter happy again after al her troubles.
21 And he spoke to his wife to make ready a feast, and prepare all kind of provisions that are necessary for such as go a journey.	21 After that, take away a half of al I have, and take her safe and sound back to your father. When mywife and I are dead you shall have the other half. Courage, my boy! I am your father, and Edna is your mother.We are your parents in future, as we are your sister's. Courage, my son!'
22 He caused also two fat kine, and four wethers to be killed, and a banquet to be prepared for all his neighbours, and all his friends.
23 And Raguel adjured Tobias, to abide with him two weeks.
24 And of all things which Raguel possessed, he gave one half to Tobias, and made him a writing, that the half that remained should after their decease come also to Tobias.
