1 Alors Sofar de Nahama prit la parole et dit:	1 And Zophar the Naamathite spoke out and said:
2 Ne faut-il pas répondre à tant de discours, suffit-il de bien parler pour avoir raison?	2 Should not the man of many words be answered, or must the garrulous man necessarily be right?
3 Faut-il qu’on se taise quand tu radotes, qu’on ne te remette pas en place quand tu te moques?	3 Shall your babblings keep men silent, and shall you deride and no one give rebuke?
4 Tu as dit à Dieu: “Ma position est correcte, je suis pur devant toi!”	4 Shall you say: "My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight"?
5 Il faudrait bien que Dieu te parle, qu’il vienne t’adresser la parole!	5 But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips against you,
6 Il te dirait quelques secrets de sa sagesse, bien mystérieux pour notre intelligence, et tu verrais que Dieu t’a pris en faute.	6 And tell you that the secrets of wisdom are twice as effective: So you might learn that God will make you answer for your guilt.
7 Pourras-tu sonder la profondeur de Dieu, t’élever jusqu’à la perfection du Puissant?	7 Can you penetrate the designs of God? Dare you vie with the perfection of the Almighty?
8 Elle atteint plus haut que les cieux: que feras-tu? plus profond que le monde des morts: qu’en sauras-tu?	8 It is higher than the heavens; what can you do? It is deeper than the nether world; what can you know?
9 Sa mesure est plus longue que la terre, elle est plus large que la mer.	9 It is longer than the earth in measure, and broader than the sea.
10 S’il passe, s’il emprisonne, s’il fait rendre compte, qui l’en empêchera?	10 If he seize and imprison or call to judgment, who then can say him nay?
11 Car il a reconnu ceux qui sont faux, il a vu le péché, il l’a compris, bien sûr!	11 For he knows the worthlessness of men and sees iniquity; will he then ignore it?
12 Du coup l’irresponsable apprend à réfléchir: c’est un ânon sauvage que l’on dresse.	12 Will empty man then gain understanding, and the wild jackass be made docile?
13 Reprends donc en main ton cœur et tends les mains vers lui,	13 If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him,
14 jette au loin le mal que tu faisais et que l’injustice ne s’abrite pas chez toi.	14 If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent,
15 Alors, te sachant pur, tu lèveras ton regard, tu seras ferme et n’auras pas peur.	15 Surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid.
16 Tu ne penseras plus à tes malheurs: un souvenir peut-être, comme des eaux écoulées.	16 For then you shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed away.
17 Ce sera l’existence plus brillante qu’un midi, où les recoins obscurs sont encore des matins.	17 Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning,
18 Tu te sentiras sûr, ayant une espérance; bien protégé, tu dormiras en paix.	18 And you shall be secure, because there is hope; you shall look round you and lie down in safety,
19 Personne ne troublera ton repos, et beaucoup chercheront à te plaire.	19 and you shall take your rest with none to disturb. Many shall entreat your favor,
20 Mais les yeux des méchants seront enténébrés, il perdront tout moyen d’échapper: leur seul espoir est de rendre l’âme.	20 but the wicked, looking on, shall be consumed with envy. Escape shall be cut off from them, they shall wait to expire.
