CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNOVA VULGATA
And so, I beg you, brothers, by the mercy of God, that you offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, with the subservience of your mind.1 Obsecro itaque vos, fratres, per misericordiam Dei, ut exhibeatiscorpora vestra hostiam viventem, sanctam, Deo placentem, rationabile obsequiumvestrum;
And do not choose to be conformed to this age, but instead choose to be reformed in the newness of your mind, so that you may demonstrate what is the will of God: what is good, and what is well-pleasing, and what is perfect.2 et nolite conformari huic saeculo, sed transformamini renovationementis, ut probetis quid sit voluntas Dei, quid bonum et bene placens etperfectum.
For I say, through the grace that has been given to me, to all who are among you: Taste no more than it is necessary to taste, but taste unto sobriety and just as God has distributed a share of the faith to each one.3 Dico enim per gratiam, quae data est mihi, omnibus, qui sunt inter vos, nonaltius sapere quam oportet sapere, sed sapere ad sobrietatem, unicuique sicutDeus divisit mensuram fidei.
For just as, within one body, we have many parts, though all the parts do not have the same role,4 Sicut enim in uno corpore multa membra habemus,omnia autem membra non eundem actum habent,
so also we, being many, are one body in Christ, and each one is a part, the one of the other.5 ita multi unum corpus sumus inChristo, singuli autem alter alterius membra.
And we each have different gifts, according to the grace that has been given to us: whether prophecy, in agreement with the reasonableness of faith;6 Habentes autem donationessecundum gratiam, quae data est nobis, differentes: sive prophetiam, secundumrationem fidei;
or ministry, in ministering; or he who teaches, in doctrine;7 sive ministerium, in ministrando; sive qui docet, in doctrina;
he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, in simplicity; he who governs, in solicitude; he who shows mercy, in cheerfulness.8 sive qui exhortatur, in exhortando; qui tribuit, in simplicitate; qui praeest,in sollicitudine; qui miseretur, in hilaritate.
Let love be without falseness: hating evil, clinging to what is good,9 Dilectio sine simulatione. Odientes malum, adhaerentes bono;
loving one another with fraternal charity, surpassing one another in honor:10 caritatefraternitatis invicem diligentes, honore invicem praevenientes,
in solicitude, not lazy; in spirit, fervent; serving the Lord;11 sollicitudinenon pigri, spiritu ferventes, Domino servientes,
in hope, rejoicing; in tribulation, enduring; in prayer, ever-willing;12 spe gaudentes, intribulatione patientes, orationi instantes,
in the difficulties of the saints, sharing; in hospitality, attentive.13 necessitatibus sanctorumcommunicantes, hospitalitatem sectantes.
Bless those who are persecuting you: bless, and do not curse.14 Benedicite persequentibus;benedicite et nolite maledicere!
Rejoice with those who are rejoicing. Weep with those who are weeping.15 Gaudere cum gaudentibus, flere cumflentibus.
Be of the same mind toward one another: not savoring what is exalted, but consenting in humility. Do not choose to seem wise to yourself.16 Idipsum invicem sentientes, non alta sapientes, sed humilibusconsentientes. Nolite esse prudentes apud vosmetipsos.
Render to no one harm for harm. Provide good things, not only in the sight of God, but also in the sight of all men.17 Nulli malum pro malo reddentes; providentes bona coram omnibus hominibus;
If it is possible, in so far as you are able, be at peace with all men.18 si fieri potest, quod ex vobis est, cum omnibus hominibus pacem habentes;
Do not defend yourselves, dearest ones. Instead, step aside from wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is mine. I shall give retribution, says the Lord.”19 nonvosmetipsos vindicantes, carissimi, sed date locum irae, scriptum est enim: “Mihi vindicta, ego retribuam ”, dicit Dominus.
So if an enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. For in doing so, you will heap burning coals upon his head.20 Sed si esurierit inimicustuus, ciba illum; si sitit, potum da illi. Hoc enim faciens, carbones igniscongeres super caput eius.
Do not allow evil to prevail, instead prevail over evil by means of goodness.21 Noli vinci a malo, sed vince in bono malum.
