Job 34

1 After proclaiming these things, Eliu now had this to say:	1 Élihou reprit la parole:
2 May the wise hear my words, and may the educated listen to me.	2 Écoutez-moi donc, vous, les sages, prêtez l’oreille, vous qui savez!
3 For the ear examines words, and the mouth discerns foods by the taste.	3 Car l’oreille soupèse les mots, tout comme le palais apprécie la nourriture.
4 Let us choose judgment for ourselves, and let us consider among ourselves what is best.	4 Voyons ensemble ce qui est juste, mettons-nous d’accord sur ce qui est bien.
5 For Job has said: “I am just, yet God has subverted my judgment.	5 Job a donc dit: “Je suis innocent, mais il ne reconnaît pas mon droit:
6 For, within my judgment, there is a lie: my vehement barbs are without any sin.”	6 Dieu ment à propos de mon droit, bien que sans péché, ma blessure est incurable”.
7 What man is there that is like Job, who drinks up derision as if it were water,	7 Mais qui est-il, ce Job? Il se moque aussi facilement qu’il boit,
8 who accompanies those who work iniquity, and who walks with impious men?	8 il prend le parti des malfaiteurs, il est d’accord avec les méchants!
9 For he has said, “Man will not please God, even if he should travel with him.”	9 Il a bien dit: “C’est sans profit pour l’homme, que d’être en bons termes avec Dieu”.
10 Therefore, prudent men, hear me: impiety is far from God, and iniquity is far from the Almighty.	10 Écoutez-moi donc vous qui réfléchissez: Dieu n’a rien à faire avec le mal, le Puissant est loin de toute injustice.
11 For he will restore to man his works, and according to the ways of each, he will repay them.	11 Il rend aux hommes ce qu’ils ont fait, il donne à chacun ce que mérite son chemin.
12 For truly, God will not condemn in vain, nor will the Almighty repudiate judgment.	12 Non, c’est certain, Dieu ne fait pas le mal, le Puissant ne tourne pas le droit.
13 What other is established over the earth? Or whom has he placed over the world, which he made?	13 Est-ce un autre qui lui a confié la terre, qui lui a mis en mains le monde?
14 But, if he directs his heart towards him, he will draw his spirit and breath to himself.	14 S’il ramenait à lui sa pensée, s’il reprenait son esprit et son souffle,
15 All flesh will fail together, and man will return to ashes.	15 tous les vivants expireraient à l’instant, et les humains retourneraient à la poussière.
16 Therefore, if you have understanding, hear what is said, and heed the sound of my eloquence.	16 Écoute donc, toi qui es intelligent; sois attentif à ce que je te dis.
17 Is he that does not love judgment able to be corrected? And how can you so greatly condemn him who is just?	17 Dieu gouvernerait-il, s’il détestait le droit? Peux-tu le condamner s’il est juste et puissant?
18 He says to the king, “You are an apostate.” He calls commanders impious.	18 Lui peut dire à un roi: “Vaurien!” et à des nobles: “C’est vous les coupables!”
19 He does not accept the reputation of leaders; nor does he recognize the tyrant as he contends against the poor. For all are the work of his hands.	19 Il ne prend pas le parti des princes, ne donne pas l’avantage au riche sur le pauvre: ils sont pareillement l’œuvre de ses mains.
20 They will die suddenly, and the people will be troubled in the middle of the night, but they will pass through it, and the violent will be taken away without a hand.	20 De nuit, en moins que rien, ils meurent: un soulèvement du peuple, et ils ont disparu. Il n’a pas besoin de mains pour ôter un tyran.
21 For his eyes are upon the ways of men, and he examines all of their steps.	21 Car ses yeux se penchent sur les chemins de l’homme, surveillant sa conduite et chacun de ses pas.
22 There is no darkness and no shadow of death, where those who work iniquity may be hidden.	22 Il n’y a pas d’ombres, ou de ténèbres, où puisse se cacher le malfaiteur,
23 For it is no longer within the power of man to enter into judgment with God.	23 Il ne fixe pas de rendez-vous pour qu’on aille se présenter devant lui:
24 He will break into many innumerable pieces, and he will cause others to stand up in their place.	24 il brise les grands sans enquête et il en met d’autres à leur place.
25 For he knows their works, and, as a result, he will bring the night, and they will be crushed.	25 Il connaissait bien leurs forfaits, en une nuit il les renverse et ils sont écrasés:
26 Just as the impious do, he has struck them in a place where they can be seen.	26 il les gifle comme des méchants, au vu et au su de la foule.
27 They, as if with great diligence, have withdrawn from him, and they refused to understand all his ways,	27 C’est qu’ils s’étaient détournés de lui, et ne tenaient pas compte de ses volontés,
28 so that they caused the outcry of the needy to reach him, and he heard the voice of the poor.	28 tandis que le cri des faibles montait vers lui, et que lui écoutait la plainte des malheureux.
29 For, when he grants peace, who is there that can condemn? When he hides his face, who is there that can contemplate him, either among the nations, or among all men?	29 S’il veut se taire, qui le fera bouger, s’il cache sa face, qui le verra? Il surveille les nations et les personnes,
30 He causes a hypocritical man to reign because of the sins of the people.	30 s’opposant au pouvoir de l’oppresseur du peuple.
31 Therefore, since I have been speaking about God, I will not prevent you from doing the same.	31 S’il dit à Dieu: “Je me suis laissé tenter, mais je ne ferai plus le mal;
32 If I have erred, you may teach me; if I have spoken unfairly, I will add no more.	32 instruis-moi pour que je sache, j’ai commis des crimes, je ne le ferai plus.”
33 Does God require this of you because it is displeasing to you? For you were the first to speak, and not I. But if you know something better, speak.	33 En ce cas, d’après toi, Dieu punira-t-il? Toi qui n’es pas d’accord, c’est à toi de décider, pas à moi; dis donc ce que tu sais!
34 Let men of understanding speak to me, and let a wise man listen to me.	34 Mais les hommes sensés me diront, n’importe quel sage qui m’écoute:
35 But Job has been speaking foolishly, and his words contain unsound teaching.	35 “Job parle sans savoir, ses paroles ne sont pas raisonnables.
36 My father, let Job be tested even to the end; may you not retreat from a man of iniquity.	36 Job doit être examiné à fond, car ses réponses sont celles d’un impie.
37 For he adds blasphemy on top of his sins; nevertheless, let him be constrained to be among us, and then let him provoke God to judgment with his speeches.	37 Il s’enfonce dans ses péchés, car devant nous il nie sa faute et multiplie ses attaques contre Dieu!
