1 But Zophar the Naamathite, responding, said:	1 Ma Sophar di Naamath rispose, e disse:
2 Will he who speaks much, not also listen? Or will a talkative man be justified?	2 Forse colui, che mollo discorre non avrà ancor da ascoltare? Od un gran parlatore sarà dichiarato giusto?
3 Will men be silent only for you? And when you have mocked others, will no one refute you?	3 Tu solo farai tacer gli uomini? E dopo avere scherniti gli altri da nissuno sarai confutato?
4 For you said: “My word is pure, and I am clean in your sight.”	4 Perocché tu hai detto: La mia dottrina è pura, ed io son mondo negli occhi tuoi.
5 Yet I wish that God would speak with you, and would open his lips to you,	5 Cosi volesse Dio parlare egli con te, e aprir con te la sua bocca:
6 so that he might reveal to you the secrets of wisdom, and how intricate his law is, and that you would understand how much less he requires of you than your iniquity deserves.	6 Per svelarti i segreti di sua sapienza, e come moltiplice è la sua legge, onde tu comprendessi come molto meno egli esige da te di quel, che si meriti la tua ingiustizia.
7 By chance, will you comprehend the footsteps of God and reach all the way to the perfection of the Almighty?	7 Forse tu scoprirai gli andamenti di Dio, e intenderai perfettamente l'Onnipotente?
8 He is higher than heaven, and what will you do? He is deeper than hell, but how will you know?	8 Egli è più alto del cielo, e che farai tu? egli è più profondo che non è l'inferno, e come potrai conoscerlo?
9 His measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.	9 Egli è di misura più estesa, che non è la terra, e più ampio del mare.
10 If he overturns all things, or packs them together, who will contradict him?	10 S'ei metterà sossopra tutte le cose, o le confonderà tutte insieme, chi a lui si opporrà?
11 For he knows the vanity of men, and when he sees iniquity, does he not evaluate it?	11 Or ei conosce la vanità de'mortali, e veggendo la loro iniquità non ne farà egli conto?
12 A vain man is lifted up in arrogance, and he thinks that he is born free like a wild ass’s colt.	12 L'uomo stolto si leva in superbia, e qual asinello salvatico si crede nato per non aver freno.
13 But you have fortified your heart and extended your hands to him.	13 Ma tu ti se' indurato in cuor tuo, ed hai stese le mani verso di lui.
14 If you would send away from you the iniquity that is in your hand, and not let injustice remain in your tabernacle,	14 Se rimoverai da te l'iniquità delle tue mani, e se scevra d'ingiustizia rimarrà la tua casa:
15 then you would be able to lift up your face without blemish, and you would be steadfast and unafraid.	15 Allora essendo senza macola potrai alzar la tua faccia, ed avrai fermo stato senza timori.
16 Misery, likewise, you would forget, or would remember only like waters that have passed by.	16 E ti scorderai della tua stessa miseria, o te ne ricorderai, come di una piena di acque che già passarono.
17 And brightness, like that of midday, will rise upon you until evening, and when you would think yourself consumed, you will rise up like the morning star.	17 E spunterà a te sulla sera una luce, come di mezzogiorno, e quando ti crederai distrutto sorgerai, come la stella della mattina.
18 And, when hope has been set before you, you will have faith, and, when buried, you will sleep secure.	18 E nella tua espettazione riporrai e tua fidanza, e sepolto dormirai tranquillamente.
19 You will rest, and there will be nothing to make you afraid, and many will make requests before your face.	19 Riposerai, e non sarà chi ti rechi, terrore, e moltissimi a te porgeranno preghiere.
20 But the eyes of the impious will fade away, and the path to escape will perish before them, for the abomination of the soul is their hope.	20 Ma si seccheranno gli occhi degli empj, i quali non troveranno scampo; e le loro speranze saranno in abominio all'anima loro.
