But Zophar the Naamathite, responding, said:1 Alors Sofar de Nahama prit la parole et dit:
Will he who speaks much, not also listen? Or will a talkative man be justified?2 Ne faut-il pas répondre à tant de discours, suffit-il de bien parler pour avoir raison?
Will men be silent only for you? And when you have mocked others, will no one refute you?3 Faut-il qu’on se taise quand tu radotes, qu’on ne te remette pas en place quand tu te moques?
For you said: “My word is pure, and I am clean in your sight.”4 Tu as dit à Dieu: “Ma position est correcte, je suis pur devant toi!”
Yet I wish that God would speak with you, and would open his lips to you,5 Il faudrait bien que Dieu te parle, qu’il vienne t’adresser la parole!
so that he might reveal to you the secrets of wisdom, and how intricate his law is, and that you would understand how much less he requires of you than your iniquity deserves.6 Il te dirait quelques secrets de sa sagesse, bien mystérieux pour notre intelligence, et tu verrais que Dieu t’a pris en faute.
By chance, will you comprehend the footsteps of God and reach all the way to the perfection of the Almighty?7 Pourras-tu sonder la profondeur de Dieu, t’élever jusqu’à la perfection du Puissant?
He is higher than heaven, and what will you do? He is deeper than hell, but how will you know?8 Elle atteint plus haut que les cieux: que feras-tu? plus profond que le monde des morts: qu’en sauras-tu?
His measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.9 Sa mesure est plus longue que la terre, elle est plus large que la mer.
If he overturns all things, or packs them together, who will contradict him?10 S’il passe, s’il emprisonne, s’il fait rendre compte, qui l’en empêchera?
For he knows the vanity of men, and when he sees iniquity, does he not evaluate it?11 Car il a reconnu ceux qui sont faux, il a vu le péché, il l’a compris, bien sûr!
A vain man is lifted up in arrogance, and he thinks that he is born free like a wild ass’s colt.12 Du coup l’irresponsable apprend à réfléchir: c’est un ânon sauvage que l’on dresse.
But you have fortified your heart and extended your hands to him.13 Reprends donc en main ton cœur et tends les mains vers lui,
If you would send away from you the iniquity that is in your hand, and not let injustice remain in your tabernacle,14 jette au loin le mal que tu faisais et que l’injustice ne s’abrite pas chez toi.
then you would be able to lift up your face without blemish, and you would be steadfast and unafraid.15 Alors, te sachant pur, tu lèveras ton regard, tu seras ferme et n’auras pas peur.
Misery, likewise, you would forget, or would remember only like waters that have passed by.16 Tu ne penseras plus à tes malheurs: un souvenir peut-être, comme des eaux écoulées.
And brightness, like that of midday, will rise upon you until evening, and when you would think yourself consumed, you will rise up like the morning star.17 Ce sera l’existence plus brillante qu’un midi, où les recoins obscurs sont encore des matins.
And, when hope has been set before you, you will have faith, and, when buried, you will sleep secure.18 Tu te sentiras sûr, ayant une espérance; bien protégé, tu dormiras en paix.
You will rest, and there will be nothing to make you afraid, and many will make requests before your face.19 Personne ne troublera ton repos, et beaucoup chercheront à te plaire.
But the eyes of the impious will fade away, and the path to escape will perish before them, for the abomination of the soul is their hope.20 Mais les yeux des méchants seront enténébrés, il perdront tout moyen d’échapper: leur seul espoir est de rendre l’âme.
