1 Was ist nun zu sagen von Abraham, unserem leiblichen Stammvater?	1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
2 Ist nämlich Abraham durch Werke ein Gerechter geworden, so hat er Ruhm, aber nicht vor Gott.	2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
3 Denn was sagt die Schrift? "Abraham glaubte Gott, und es wurde ihm angerechnet zur Gerechtigkeit" (1Mos 15,6).	3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
4 Dem aber, der Werke tut, wird der Lohn nicht angerechnet nach Gnade, sondern nach Schuldigkeit;	4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
5 dem jedoch, der nicht Werke tut, sondern an den glaubt, der den Sünder gerecht macht, wird sein Glaube [nach dem Ratschluß der Gnade Gottes] angerechnet zur Gerechtigkeit.	5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
6 So preist auch David den Menschen selig, dem Gott Gerechtigkeit zuerkennt ohne Werke:	6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
7 "Selig, deren Missetaten vergeben und deren Sünden zugedeckt wurden.	7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
8 Selig der Mann, dem nicht anrechnet der Herr die Sünde" (Ps 32,1f).	8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
9 Diese Seligpreisung nun, gilt sie für den Beschnittenen oder auch für den Unbeschnittenen? Wir sagen ja: "Es wurde dem Abraham der Glaube angerechnet zur Gerechtigkeit."	9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
10 Wie nun wurde er ihm angerechnet? Da er beschnitten war oder unbeschnitten? Nicht, da er beschnitten, sondern da er unbeschnitten war!	10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 Und das "Zeichen der Beschneidung" (1Mos 17,10) empfing er als Siegel der Gerechtigkeit des Glaubens, den er schon hatte, da er noch unbeschnitten war. So sollte er der Vater sein für alle, die als Unbeschnittene glauben, damit auch ihnen zuerkannt werde die Gerechtigkeit,	11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
12 und Vater für die Beschnittenen, und zwar für jene, die nicht nur beschnitten sind, sondern auch wandeln in den Fußstapfen des Glaubens, wie ihn unser Vater Abraham schon hatte, da er noch nicht beschnitten war.	12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
13 Denn nicht aufgrund des Gesetzes wurde dem Abraham oder seiner Nachkommenschaft die Verheißung zuteil, daß er der Erbe der Welt sein werde, sondern aufgrund der Glaubensgerechtigkeit.	13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
14 Wären nämlich die aus dem Gesetze Erben, wäre der Glaube wertlos und die Verheißung hinfällig geworden.	14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
15 Das Gesetz wirkt ja Strafe; wo aber kein Gesetz, da auch keine Übertretung.	15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
16 Daher "aus Glauben" und somit "nach Gnade", damit die Verheißung gültig sei für alle Nachkommen, nicht nur für die vom Gesetz, sondern auch für die vom Glauben Abrahams, der unser aller Vater ist,	16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
17 wie geschrieben ist: "Zum Vater vieler Völker habe ich dich gesetzt" (1Mos 17,5) - vor Gott, an den er glaubte als an den, der die Toten lebendig macht und das Nichtseiende ins Dasein ruft.	17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
18 Gegen alle Hoffnung hat er voll Hoffnung geglaubt, daß er sein werde "Vater vieler Völker", dem Worte gemäß: "So wird sein deine Nachkommenschaft" (1Mos 15,5).	18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
19 Und ohne schwach zu werden im Glauben, bedachte er, der nahezu Hundertjährige, seinen schon erstorbenen Leib und den erstorbenen Schoß der Sara.	19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb:
20 Er zweifelte nicht ungläubig an der Verheißung Gottes, sondern wurde stark im Glauben, gab Gott die Ehre	20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
21 und war voll überzeugt, daß er mächtig sei, auch zu verwirklichen, was er verheißen hatte.	21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
22 Und deshalb "wurde es ihm angerechnet zur Gerechtigkeit" (1Mos 15,6).	22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
23 Doch nicht nur seinetwegen wurde geschrieben, daß "es ihm [zur Gerechtigkeit] angerechnet wurde",	23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
24 sondern auch unsertwegen, denen es angerechnet wird, wenn wir glauben an den, der Jesus [Christus], unseren Herrn, auferweckt hat von den Toten,	24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
25 ihn, der "hingegeben wurde unserer Sünden wegen" (Is 53,4) und auferweckt unserer Gerechtwerdung wegen.	25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
