1 Da nahm Samuel den Ölkrug und goss Saul das Öl auf das Haupt, küsste ihn und sagte: Hiermit hat der Herr dich zum Fürsten über sein Erbe gesalbt.	1 Samuel took a phial of oil and poured it on Saul's head; he then kissed him and said, 'Has not Yahwehanointed you as leader of his people Israel? You are the man who is to govern Yahweh's people and save themfrom the power of the enemies surrounding them. The sign for you that Yahweh has anointed you as prince ofhis heritage is this:
2 Wenn du jetzt von mir weggehst, wirst du beim Grab der Rahel in Zelzach im Gebiet von Benjamin zwei Männer treffen und sie werden zu dir sagen: Die Eselinnen, nach denen du auf der Suche bist, sind gefunden worden. Doch denkt dein Vater nicht mehr an die Sache mit den Eselinnen, sondern macht sich Sorgen um euch und sagt: Was kann ich nur wegen meines Sohnes unternehmen?	2 after leaving me today, you will meet two men near the tomb of Rachel, on the frontier of Benjamin . . .and they wil say to you, "The donkeys which you went looking for have been found, and your father has lostinterest in the matter of the donkeys and is worrying about you and wondering, What am I to do about my son?"
3 Wenn du dann von dort weiterziehst und zur Tabor-Eiche kommst, werden dir dort drei Männer begegnen, die zu Gott nach Bet-El hinaufziehen. Einer trägt ein Böckchen, einer trägt drei Laib Brot und einer trägt einen Schlauch Wein.	3 Going on from there, you wil come to the Oak of Tabor, where you will meet three men going up toGod at Bethel; one wil be carrying three kids, one three loaves of bread and the third a skin of wine.
4 Sie werden dich grüßen und dir zwei Brote geben; die sollst du von ihnen annehmen.	4 They will greet you and give you two loaves of bread which you must accept from them.
5 Danach wirst du nach Gibeat- Elohim kommen, wo die Vorposten der Philister stehen. Wenn du dort in die Stadt hineingehst, wirst du eine Schar von Propheten treffen, die von der Kulthöhe herabkommen, und vor ihnen wird Harfe, Pauke, Flöte und Zither gespielt. Sie selbst sind in prophetischer Verzückung.	5 After this, you wil come to Gibeah of God (where the Philistine garrison is) and, when you are justoutside the town, you wil meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place, headed by lyre,tambourine, pipe and harp; they wil be in a state of ecstasy.
6 Dann wird der Geist des Herrn über dich kommen und du wirst wie sie in Verzückung geraten und in einen anderen Menschen verwandelt werden.	6 The spirit of Yahweh will then seize on you, and you wil go into ecstasy with them, and be changed into another man.
7 Wenn du aber all diese Zeichen erlebst, dann tu, was sich gerade ergibt; denn Gott ist mit dir.	7 When these signs have occurred, act as occasion serves, for God is with you.
8 Hernach geh mir voraus nach Gilgal hinab! Ich werde dann bereits auf dem Weg zu dir sein, um Brandopfer darzubringen und Heilsopfer zu schlachten. Sieben Tage musst du warten, bis ich zu dir komme. Dann werde ich dir verkünden, was du tun sollst.	8 You wil then go down, ahead of me, to Gilgal, and I shall join you there to make burnt offerings and tooffer communion sacrifices. You must wait seven days for me to come to you, and I shal then reveal to you whatyou must do.'
9 Als sich Saul nun umwandte, um von Samuel wegzugehen, verwandelte Gott sein Herz. Und noch am gleichen Tag trafen alle diese Zeichen ein.	9 As soon as he had turned his back to leave Samuel, God changed his heart. And al these signsoccurred that very day . . .
10 Als sie, Saul und sein Knecht, nach Gibea gelangten, kam ihnen tatsächlich eine Schar von Propheten entgegen. Der Geist Gottes kam über Saul und Saul geriet mitten unter ihnen in prophetische Verzückung.	10 From there, they came to Gibeah: and there was a group of prophets coming to meet him! The spiritof God seized on him and he fell into ecstasy with them.
11 Alle, die ihn von früher kannten, sahen, wie er zusammen mit den Propheten in Verzückung war. Die Leute sagten zueinander: Was ist denn nur mit dem Sohn des Kisch geschehen? Ist auch Saul unter den Propheten?	11 Seeing him prophesying with the prophets, al the people who had known him previously said to oneanother, 'What has come over the son of Kish? Is Saul one of the prophets too?'
12 Einer von dort erwiderte: Wer ist denn schon deren Vater? So ist das Sprichwort entstanden: Ist denn auch Saul unter den Propheten?	12 And one of the local people retorted, 'But who is their father?' Hence the origin of the proverb: Is Saulone of the prophets too?
13 Als die Verzückung zu Ende war, ging Saul nach Gibea hinein.	13 When he came out of his ecstasy, he went into Gibeah.
14 Der Onkel Sauls fragte ihn und seinen Knecht: Wo seid ihr denn gewesen? Er antwortete: Wir waren weg, um die Eselinnen zu suchen. Als wir aber sahen, dass sie nirgends (zu finden) waren, gingen wir zu Samuel.	14 Saul's uncle asked him and his servant, 'Where have you been?' 'Looking for the donkeys,' hereplied, 'and when we could not find them anywhere, we went to Samuel.'
15 Sauls Onkel sagte: Erzähl mir doch, was Samuel euch gesagt hat.	15 Saul's uncle said, 'Tel me please what Samuel said to you.'
16 Saul antwortete seinem Onkel: Er hat uns mit Bestimmtheit gesagt, dass die Eselinnen gefunden worden sind. Die Sache mit dem Königtum aber, von der Samuel gesprochen hatte, erzählte er ihm nicht.	16 Saul said to his uncle, 'He merely told us that the donkeys were already found,' but did not mentionanything that Samuel had said about the kingship.
17 Samuel rief das Volk zum Herrn nach Mizpa zusammen.	17 Samuel summoned the people to Yahweh at Mizpah
18 Er sagte zu den Israeliten: So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Ich habe Israel aus Ägypten heraufgeführt, ich habe euch aus der Gewalt der Ägypter befreit und aus der Gewalt all der Königreiche, die euch bedrängt haben.	18 and said to the Israelites, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "I brought Israel out of Egypt anddelivered you from the power of the Egyptians and of al the kingdoms that were oppressing you."
19 Ihr aber habt heute euren Gott verworfen, der euer Retter in allen Nöten und Bedrängnissen war, und ihr habt gesagt: Nein, du sollst einen König bei uns einsetzen. Stellt euch jetzt also vor dem Herrn auf, (geordnet) nach euren Stämmen und Tausendschaften.	19 But today you have rejected your God, him who saves you from al your difficulties and troubles; andyou have said, "No, you must set a king over us." Very well, take your positions before Yahweh, tribe by tribeand clan by clan.'
20 Und Samuel ließ alle Stämme Israels antreten (um das Los zu werfen). Das Los fiel auf den Stamm Benjamin.	20 Samuel then made al the tribes of Israel come forward, and the lot indicated the tribe of Benjamin.
21 Darauf ließ er den Stamm Benjamin (geordnet) nach seinen Sippen antreten und das Los fiel auf die Sippe Matri. Und schließlich fiel das Los auf Saul, den Sohn des Kisch. Man suchte ihn (überall), fand ihn aber nicht.	21 He then made the tribe of Benjamin come forward clan by clan, and the lot indicated the clan ofMatri; he then made the clan of Matri come forward one by one, and the lot indicated Saul son of Kish, but whenthey looked for him, he was not to be found.
22 Sie befragten noch einmal den Herrn: Ist noch jemand hierher gekommen? Der Herr antwortete: Ja, aber er hat sich beim Tross versteckt.	22 Again they consulted Yahweh, 'Has the man come here?' Yahweh replied, 'There he is, hidingamong the baggage.'
23 Sie liefen hin und holten ihn von dort. Als er mitten unter das Volk trat, überragte er alle anderen um Haupteslänge.	23 So they ran and fetched him out and, as he stood among the people, he was head and shoulderstal er than any of them.
24 Und Samuel sagte zum ganzen Volk: Habt ihr gesehen, wen der Herr erwählt hat? Keiner ist ihm gleich im ganzen Volk. Da jubelte das ganze Volk und sagte: Es lebe der König!	24 Samuel then said to all the people, 'You have seen the man whom Yahweh has chosen, and thatamong the whole people he has no equal.' And all the people acclaimed him, shouting, 'Long live the king!'
25 Samuel machte dem Volk das Königsrecht bekannt, schrieb es in ein Buch und legte das Buch vor dem Herrn nieder. Dann entließ Samuel das ganze Volk, jeden in sein Haus.	25 Samuel then explained the king's constitutional position to the people and inscribed this in a bookwhich he placed before Yahweh. Samuel then sent al the people away, everyone back to his home.
26 Auch Saul ging in sein Haus nach Gibea. Und mit ihm zog eine Schar von Männern, deren Herz Gott berührt hatte.	26 Saul too went home to Gibeah and with him went those strong men whose hearts God had touched.
27 Niederträchtige Menschen aber sagten: Was kann uns der schon helfen? Sie verachteten ihn und brachten ihm kein Geschenk. Er aber tat, als merkte er es nicht.	27 But there were some scoundrels who said, 'How can this fellow save us?' These treated him withcontempt and offered him no present.
