1 Wenn der Herr, dein Gott, die Völker, deren Land der Herr, dein Gott, dir geben will, niederstreckt und du ihren Besitz übernimmst und in ihren Städten und Häusern wohnst,	1 When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;
2 sollst du in dem Land, das der Herr, dein Gott, dir gibt, damit du es in Besitz nimmst, drei Städten eine Sonderstellung zuweisen.	2 Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
3 Du sollst die Wegstrecken berechnen und die Fläche des Landes, das der Herr, dein Gott, dir als Erbbesitz gibt, in drei Teile teilen. Dann kann jeder, der einen Menschen getötet hat, in diese Städte fliehen.	3 Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.
4 Und so lautet die Bestimmung für einen, der jemand getötet hat und dorthin flieht, um am Leben zu bleiben: Wenn er den andern ohne Vorsatz erschlagen hat und nicht schon früher mit ihm verfeindet gewesen ist,	4 And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;
5 zum Beispiel wenn er mit einem andern in den Wald gegangen ist, um Bäume zu fällen, seine Hand mit der Axt ausgeholt hat, um einen Baum umzuhauen, das Eisenblatt sich vom Stiel gelöst und den andern getroffen hat und dieser gestorben ist, dann kann er in eine dieser Städte fliehen, um am Leben zu bleiben.	5 As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:
6 Es darf nicht sein, dass der Weg (zum Heiligtum) zu weit ist, damit nicht der Bluträcher, der aus Rachedurst den, der getötet hat, verfolgt, ihn einholt und tödlich trifft, obwohl kein Recht besteht, ihn zu töten, da er ja mit dem Getöteten nicht schon früher verfeindet war.	6 Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.
7 Deshalb mache ich dir zur Pflicht: Du sollst drei Städten eine Sonderstellung zuweisen.	7 Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.
8 Und wenn der Herr, dein Gott, dein Gebiet vergrößert, wie er es deinen Vätern geschworen hat, und dir das ganze Land, von dem er gesagt hat, er werde es deinen Vätern geben, wirklich gibt,	8 And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;
9 weil du auf dieses ganze Gebot, auf das ich dich heute verpflichte, achtest und es hältst, indem du den Herrn, deinen Gott, liebst und dein Leben lang auf seinen Wegen gehst, dann sollst du diese drei Städte um drei weitere vermehren.	9 If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:
10 So soll verhindert werden, dass mitten in dem Land, das der Herr, dein Gott, dir als Erbbesitz gibt, unschuldiges Blut vergossen wird und Blutschuld über dich kommt.	10 That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.
11 Wenn es sich um einen Mann handelt, der mit einem andern verfeindet war, wenn er ihm auflauerte, ihn überfiel und tödlich traf, sodass er starb, und wenn er in eine dieser Städte floh,	11 But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:
12 dann sollen die Ältesten seiner Stadt ihn von dort holen lassen und in die Gewalt des Bluträchers geben und er soll sterben.	12 Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
13 Du sollst in dir kein Mitleid mit ihm aufsteigen lassen. Du sollst das Blut des Unschuldigen aus Israel wegschaffen und es wird dir gut gehen.	13 Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.
14 An deinem Erbbesitz, der dir in dem Land zugeteilt werden soll, das der Herr, dein Gott, dir gibt, damit du es in Besitz nimmst, sollst du die Grenzmarkierung zu deinem Nachbarn hin, die die Vorfahren errichtet haben, nicht verrücken.	14 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
15 Wenn es um ein Verbrechen oder ein Vergehen geht, darf ein einzelner Belastungszeuge nicht Recht bekommen, welches Vergehen auch immer der Angeklagte begangen hat. Erst auf die Aussage von zwei oder drei Zeugen darf eine Sache Recht bekommen.	15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
16 Wenn jemand vor Gericht geht und als Zeuge einen andern zu Unrecht der Anstiftung zum Aufruhr bezichtigt,	16 If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;
17 wenn die beiden Parteien mit ihrem Rechtsstreit vor den Herrn hintreten, vor die Priester und Richter, die dann amtieren,	17 Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
18 wenn die Richter eine genaue Ermittlung anstellen und sich zeigt: Der Mann ist ein falscher Zeuge, er hat seinen Bruder fälschlich bezichtigt,	18 And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
19 dann sollt ihr mit ihm so verfahren, wie er mit seinem Bruder verfahren wollte. Du sollst das Böse aus deiner Mitte wegschaffen.	19 Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.
20 Die Übrigen sollen davon hören, damit sie sich fürchten und nicht noch einmal ein solches Verbrechen in deiner Mitte begehen.	20 And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.
21 Und du sollst in dir kein Mitleid aufsteigen lassen: Leben für Leben, Auge für Auge, Zahn für Zahn, Hand für Hand, Fuß für Fuß.	21 And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
