1 In Babylon wohnte ein Mann mit Namen Jojakim.	1 And there was a man living in Babylon, and his name was Joakim.
2 Er hatte Susanna, die Tochter Hilkijas, zur Frau; sie war sehr schön und gottesfürchtig.	2 And he received a wife named Susanna, the daughter of Hilkiah, who was very beautiful and God-fearing.
3 Auch ihre Eltern waren gerecht und hatten ihre Tochter nach dem Gesetz des Mose erzogen.	3 For her parents, because they were righteous, had educated their daughter according to the law of Moses.
4 Jojakim war sehr reich; er besaß einen Garten nahe bei seinem Haus. Die Juden pflegten bei ihm zusammenzukommen, weil er der Angesehenste von allen war.	4 But Joakim was very wealthy, and he had an orchard near his house, and the Jews flocked to him, because he was the most honorable of them all.
5 Als Richter amtierten in jenem Jahr zwei Älteste aus dem Volk, von denen galt, was der Herr gesagt hat: Ungerechtigkeit ging von Babylon aus, von den Ältesten, von den Richtern, die als Leiter des Volkes galten.	5 And two elder judges had been appointed among the people that year, about whom the Lord has said, “Iniquity has come out of Babylon, from the elder judges, who seemed to govern the people.”
6 Sie hielten sich regelmäßig im Haus Jojakims auf und alle, die eine Rechtssache hatten, kamen zu ihnen.	6 These frequented the house of Joakim, and all came to them, who had need of judgment.
7 Hatten sich nun die Leute um die Mittagszeit wieder entfernt, dann kam Susanna und ging im Garten ihres Mannes spazieren.	7 But when the people departed at noontime, Susanna went in and walked around in her husband’s orchard.
8 Die beiden Ältesten sahen sie täglich kommen und umhergehen; da regte sich in ihnen die Begierde nach ihr.	8 And the elders saw her entering and walking around every day, and they were inflamed with desire towards her.
9 Ihre Gedanken gerieten auf Abwege und ihre Augen gingen in die Irre; sie sahen weder zum Himmel auf, noch dachten sie an die gerechten Strafen Gottes.	9 And they perverted their reason and turned away their eyes, so that they would not look to heaven, nor call to mind just judgments.
10 Beide hatten wegen Susanna Liebeskummer; doch keiner sagte dem anderen etwas von seinem Schmerz.	10 And so they were both wounded by the love of her, yet they did not reveal their grief to one another.
11 Denn sie schämten sich darüber, dass sie so begierig waren, mit ihr zusammen zu sein.	11 For they were ashamed to reveal to each other their desire, wanting to lie with her.
12 Ungeduldig warteten sie jeden Tag darauf, sie zu sehen.	12 And so they watched carefully every day to see her. And one said to the other,
13 Eines Tages sagte der eine zum andern: Gehen wir nach Hause, es ist Zeit zum Essen. Sie trennten sich also und gingen weg,	13 “Let us go home, for it is lunch time.” And going out, they departed one from another.
14 dann aber kehrte jeder um und sie trafen wieder zusammen. Sie fragten einander nach der Ursache und gestanden sich ihre Leidenschaft. Daraufhin verabredeten sie eine Zeit, zu der es ihnen möglich sein sollte, Susanna allein anzutreffen.	14 And returning again, they came to the same place, and, each asking the other the reason, they admitted their desire. And then they agreed to set a time when they would be able to find her alone.
15 Während sie auf einen günstigen Tag warteten, kam Susanna eines Tages wie gewöhnlich in den Garten, nur von zwei Mädchen begleitet, und wollte baden; denn es war heiß.	15 But it happened, while they watched for an opportune day, that she entered at a particular time, just as yesterday and the day before, with only two maids, and she wanted to wash in the orchard, because it was so hot.
16 Niemand war dort außer den beiden Ältesten, die sich versteckt hatten und ihr auflauerten.	16 And there was no one there, except the two elders in hiding, and they were studying her.
17 Sie sagte zu den Mädchen: Holt mir Öl und Salben und verriegelt das Gartentor, damit ich baden kann.	17 And so she said to the maids, “Bring me oil and ointments, and shut the doors of the orchard, so that I may wash.”
18 Die Mädchen taten, wie ihnen befohlen war. Sie verriegelten das Tor und verließen den Garten durch die Seitenpforte, um zu holen, was ihnen aufgetragen war. Von den Ältesten bemerkten sie nichts, denn diese hatten sich versteckt.	18 And they did as she ordered them. And they shut the doors of the orchard and left through a back door to fetch what she required, and they did not know that the elders were hiding within.
19 Als die Mädchen weg waren, standen die beiden Ältesten auf, liefen zu Susanna hin	19 But when the maids had departed, the two elders arose and hurried to her, and they said,
20 und sagten: Das Gartentor ist verschlossen und niemand sieht uns; wir brennen vor Verlangen nach dir: Sei uns zu Willen und gib dich uns hin!	20 “Behold, the doors of the orchard are closed, and no one can see us, and we are in desire for you. Because of these things, consent to us and lie with us.
21 Weigerst du dich, dann bezeugen wir gegen dich, dass ein junger Mann bei dir war und dass du deshalb die Mädchen weggeschickt hast.	21 But if you will not, we will bear witness against you that a young man was with you and, for this reason, you sent your maids away from you.”
22 Da seufzte Susanna und sagte: Ich bin bedrängt von allen Seiten: Wenn ich es tue, so droht mir der Tod; tue ich es aber nicht, so werde ich euch nicht entrinnen.	22 Susanna sighed and said, “I am closed in on every side. For if I do this thing, it is death to me; yet if I do not do it, I will not escape your hands.
23 Es ist besser für mich, es nicht zu tun und euch in die Hände zu fallen, als gegen den Herrn zu sündigen.	23 But it is better for me to fall unavoidably into your hands, than to sin in the sight of the Lord.”
24 Dann schrie Susanna, so laut sie konnte. Aber zugleich mit ihr schrien auch die beiden Ältesten	24 And Susanna cried out with a loud voice, but the elders also cried out against her.
25 und einer von ihnen lief zum Gartentor und öffnete es.	25 And one of them hurried to the door of the orchard and opened it.
26 Als die Leute im Haus das Geschrei im Garten hörten, eilten sie durch die Seitentür herbei, um zu sehen, was ihr zugestoßen sei.	26 And so, when the servants of the house heard the outcry in the orchard, they rushed in by the back door to see what was happening.
27 Als die Ältesten ihre Erklärung gaben, schämten sich die Diener sehr; denn noch nie war so etwas über Susanna gesagt worden.	27 But after the old men had spoken, the servants were greatly ashamed, for there had never been anything of this kind said about Susanna. And it happened on the next day,
28 Als am nächsten Morgen das Volk bei Jojakim, ihrem Mann, zusammenkam, erschienen auch die beiden Ältesten. Sie kamen mit der verbrecherischen Absicht, gegen Susanna die Todesstrafe zu erwirken. Sie sagten vor dem Volk:	28 when the people came to Joakim her husband, that the two appointed elders also came, full of wicked plans against Susanna, in order to put her to death.
29 Schickt nach Susanna, der Tochter Hilkijas, der Frau Jojakims! Man schickte nach ihr.	29 And they said before the people, “Send for Susanna, daughter of Hilkiah, the wife of Joakim.” And immediately they sent for her.
30 Sie kam, begleitet von ihren Eltern, ihren Kindern und allen Verwandten.	30 And she arrived with her parents, and sons, and all her relatives.
31 Susanna war anmutig und sehr schön.	31 Moreover, Susanna was exceedingly delicate and beautiful in appearance.
32 Sie war aber verschleiert. Um sich an ihrer Schönheit zu weiden, befahlen die Gewissenlosen, sie zu entschleiern.	32 But those wicked ones commanded that her face should be uncovered, (for she was covered,) so that at least they might be satisfied with her beauty.
33 Da weinten ihre Angehörigen und alle, die sie sahen, begannen ebenfalls zu weinen.	33 Therefore, her own and all who knew her wept.
34 Vor dem ganzen Volk standen nun die beiden Ältesten auf und legten die Hände auf den Kopf Susannas.	34 Yet the two appointed elders, rising up in the midst of the people, set their hands upon her head.
35 Sie aber blickte weinend zum Himmel auf; denn ihr Herz vertraute dem Herrn.	35 And weeping, she gazed up to heaven, for her heart had faith in the Lord.
36 Die Ältesten sagten: Während wir allein im Garten spazieren gingen, kam diese Frau mit zwei Mägden herein. Sie ließ das Gartentor verriegeln und schickte die Mägde fort.	36 And the appointed elders said, “While we were talking a walk in the orchard alone, this one came in with two maids, and she shut the doors of the orchard, and she sent the maids away from her.
37 Dann kam ein junger Mann zu ihr, der sich versteckt hatte, und legte sich zu ihr.	37 And a young man came to her, who was in hiding, and he lay down with her.
38 Wir waren gerade in einer abgelegenen Ecke des Gartens; als wir aber die Sünde sahen, eilten wir zu ihnen hin	38 Furthermore, since we were in a corner of the orchard, seeing this wickedness, we ran up to them, and we saw them consorting together.
39 und sahen, wie sie zusammen waren. Den Mann konnten wir nicht festhalten; denn er war stärker als wir; er öffnete das Tor und entkam.	39 And, indeed, we were unable to catch him, because he was stronger than us, and opening the doors, he leaped out.
40 Aber diese da hielten wir fest und fragten sie, wer der junge Mann war.	40 But, since we had apprehended this one, we demanded to know who the young man was, but she was unwilling to tell us. On this matter, we are witnesses.”
41 Sie wollte es uns aber nicht verraten. Das alles können wir bezeugen. Die versammelte Gemeinde glaubte ihnen, weil sie Älteste des Volkes und Richter waren, und verurteilte Susanna zum Tod.	41 The multitude believed them, just as if they were elders and the judges of the people, and they condemned her to death.
42 Da rief sie laut: Ewiger Gott, du kennst auch das Verborgene; du weißt alles, noch bevor es geschieht.	42 But Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said, “Eternal God, who knows what is hidden, who knows all things before they happen,
43 Du weißt auch, dass sie eine falsche Aussage gegen mich gemacht haben. Darum muss ich jetzt sterben, obwohl ich nichts von dem getan habe, was diese Menschen mir vorwerfen.	43 you know that they have borne false witness against me, and behold, I must die, though I have done none of these things, which these men have maliciously invented against me.”
44 Der Herr erhörte ihr Rufen.	44 But the Lord heeded her voice.
45 Als man sie zur Hinrichtung führte, erweckte Gott den heiligen Geist in einem jungen Mann namens Daniel.	45 And when she was led away to death, the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young boy, whose name was Daniel.
46 Dieser rief laut: Ich bin unschuldig am Tod dieser Frau.	46 And he cried out with a loud voice, “I am clean of the blood of this one.”
47 Da wandten sich alle Leute nach ihm um und fragten ihn: Was soll das heißen, was du da gesagt hast?	47 And all the people, turning back towards him, said, “What is this word that you are saying?”
48 Er trat mitten unter sie und sagte: Seid ihr so töricht, ihr Söhne Israels? Ohne Verhör und ohne Prüfung der Beweise habt ihr eine Tochter Israels verurteilt.	48 But he, while standing in the midst of them, said, “Are you so foolish, sons of Israel, that without judging and without knowing what the truth is, you have condemned a daughter of Israel?
49 Kehrt zurück zum Ort des Gerichts! Denn diese Ältesten haben eine falsche Aussage gegen Susanna gemacht.	49 Return to judgment, because they have spoken false witness against her.”
50 Eilig kehrten alle Leute wieder um und die Ältesten sagten zu Daniel: Setz dich hier mitten unter uns und sag uns, was du zu sagen hast. Denn dir hat Gott den Vorsitz verliehen.	50 Therefore, the people returned with haste, and the old men said to him, “Come and sit down in our midst and show us, since God has given you the honor of old age.”
51 Daniel sagte zu ihnen: Trennt diese beiden Männer, bringt sie weit auseinander! Ich will sie verhören.	51 And Daniel said to them, “Separate these at a distance from one another, and I will judge between them.”
52 Als man sie voneinander getrennt hatte, rief er den einen von ihnen her und sagte zu ihm: In Schlechtigkeit bist du alt geworden; doch jetzt kommt die Strafe für die Sünden, die du bisher begangen hast.	52 And so, when they were divided, one from the other, he called one of them, and he said to him, “You deep-rooted ancient evil, now your sins have come out, which you have committed before,
53 Ungerechte Urteile hast du gefällt, Schuldlose verurteilt, aber Schuldige freigesprochen; und doch hat der Herr gesagt: Einen Schuldlosen und Gerechten sollst du nicht töten.	53 judging unjust judgments, oppressing the innocent, and setting free the guilty, though the Lord declares, ‘The innocent and the just you must not put to death.’
54 Wenn du also diese Frau wirklich gesehen hast, dann sag uns: Was für ein Baum war das, unter dem du die beiden zusammen gesehen hast? Er antwortete: Unter einer Zeder.	54 Now then, if you saw her, declare under which tree you saw them conversing together.” He said, “Under an evergreen mastic tree.”
55 Da sagte Daniel: Mit deiner Lüge hast du dein eigenes Haupt getroffen. Der Engel Gottes wird dich zerspalten; schon hat er von Gott den Befehl dazu erhalten.	55 But Daniel said, “Truly, you have lied against your own head. For behold, the angel of God, having received the sentence from him, will split you down the middle.
56 Dann ließ er ihn wegbringen und befahl, den andern vorzuführen. Zu ihm sagte er: Du Sohn Kanaans, nicht Judas, dich hat die Schönheit verführt, die Leidenschaft hat dein Herz verdorben.	56 And, having put him aside, he commanded the other to approach, and he said to him, “You offspring of Canaan, and not of Judah, beauty has deceived you, and desire has perverted your heart.
57 So konntet ihr an den Töchtern Israels handeln, sie fürchteten sich und waren euch zu Willen. Aber die Tochter Judas hat eure Gemeinheit nicht geduldet.	57 Thus did you do to the daughters of Israel, and they, out of fear, consorted with you, but a daughter of Judah would not tolerate your iniquity.
58 Nun sag mir: Was für ein Baum war das, unter dem du die beiden ertappt hast? Er antwortete: Unter einer Eiche.	58 Now then, declare to me, under which tree you caught them conversing together.” He said, “Under an evergreen oak tree.”
59 Da sagte Daniel zu ihm: Mit deiner Lüge hast auch du dein eigenes Haupt getroffen. Der Engel Gottes wartet schon mit dem Schwert in der Hand, um dich mitten entzweizuhauen. So wird er euch beide vernichten.	59 And Daniel said to him, “Truly, you also have lied against your own head. For the angel of the Lord waits, holding a sword, to cut you down the middle and put you to death.”
60 Da schrie die ganze Gemeinde laut auf und pries Gott, der alle rettet, die auf ihn hoffen.	60 And then the entire assembly cried out in a loud voice, and they blessed God, who saves those who hope in him.
61 Dann erhoben sie sich gegen die beiden Ältesten, die Daniel durch ihre eigenen Worte als falsche Zeugen entlarvt hatte. Das Böse, das sie ihrem Nächsten hatten antun wollen, tat man	61 And they rose up against the two appointed elders, (for Daniel had convicted them, by their own mouth, of bearing false witness,) and they did to them just as they had wickedly done against their neighbor,
62 nach dem Gesetz des Mose ihnen an: Man tötete sie. So wurde an jenem Tag unschuldiges Blut gerettet.	62 so as to act according to the law of Moses. And they put them to death, and innocent blood was saved on that day.
63 Hilkija und seine Frau priesen Gott wegen ihrer Tochter Susanna, ebenso ihr Mann Jojakim und alle Verwandten, weil sich zeigte, dass sie nichts Schändliches getan hatte.	63 But Hilkiah and his wife praised God for their daughter, Susanna, with Joakim, her husband, and all her relatives, because there had been found in her no disgrace.
64 Daniel aber gewann seit jenem Tag und auch weiterhin beim Volk großes Ansehen.	64 And so Daniel became great in the sight of the people from that day, and thereafter.
	65 And king Astyages was laid to rest with his fathers. And Cyrus the Persian received his kingdom.
