1 Das sind die Namen der Söhne Israels, die nach Ägypten gekommen waren - mit Jakob waren sie gekommen, jeder mit seiner Familie:	1 These are the names of the sons of Israel, who went into Egypt with Jacob. They entered, each one with his house:
2 Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Juda,	2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,
3 Issachar, Sebulon, Benjamin,	3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4 Dan, Naftali, Gad und Ascher.	4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5 Zusammen waren es siebzig Personen; sie alle stammten von Jakob ab. Josef aber war bereits in Ägypten.	5 Therefore, all the souls of those who went forth from Jacob’s thigh were seventy. Now Joseph was in Egypt.
6 Josef, alle seine Brüder und seine Zeitgenossen waren gestorben.	6 When he had died, along with all of his brothers and all of that generation,
7 Aber die Söhne Israels waren fruchtbar, sodass das Land von ihnen wimmelte. Sie vermehrten sich und wurden überaus stark; sie bevölkerten das Land.	7 the sons of Israel increased, and they multiplied like seedlings. And having been strengthened exceedingly, they filled the land.
8 In Ägypten kam ein neuer König an die Macht, der Josef nicht gekannt hatte.	8 Meanwhile, there arose a new king over Egypt, who was ignorant of Joseph.
9 Er sagte zu seinem Volk: Seht nur, das Volk der Israeliten ist größer und stärker als wir.	9 And he said to his people: “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are many, and they are stronger than we are.
10 Gebt Acht! Wir müssen überlegen, was wir gegen sie tun können, damit sie sich nicht weiter vermehren. Wenn ein Krieg ausbricht, können sie sich unseren Feinden anschließen, gegen uns kämpfen und sich des Landes bemächtigen.	10 Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply; and if any war should advance against us, they may be added to our enemies, and having fought against us, they might depart from the land.”
11 Da setzte man Fronvögte über sie ein, um sie durch schwere Arbeit unter Druck zu setzen. Sie mussten für den Pharao die Städte Pitom und Ramses als Vorratslager bauen.	11 And so he set over them masters of the works, in order to afflict them with burdens. And they built for Pharaoh the cities of the tabernacles: Pithom and Raamses.
12 Je mehr man sie aber unter Druck hielt, umso stärker vermehrten sie sich und breiteten sie sich aus, sodass die Ägypter vor ihnen das Grauen packte.	12 And the more they oppressed them, so much more did they multiply and increase.
13 Daher gingen sie hart gegen die Israeliten vor und machten sie zu Sklaven.	13 And the Egyptians hated the sons of Israel, and they afflicted them and mocked them.
14 Sie machten ihnen das Leben schwer durch harte Arbeit mit Lehm und Ziegeln und durch alle möglichen Arbeiten auf den Feldern. So wurden die Israeliten zu harter Sklavenarbeit gezwungen.	14 And they led their life directly into bitterness, with hard work in clay and brick, and with all kinds of servitude, so that they were being overwhelmed with the works of the land.
15 Zu den hebräischen Hebammen - die eine hieß Schifra, die andere Pua - sagte der König von Ägypten:	15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, (one of whom one was called Shiphrah, another Puah)
16 Wenn ihr den Hebräerinnen Geburtshilfe leistet, dann achtet auf das Geschlecht! Ist es ein Knabe, so lasst ihn sterben! Ist es ein Mädchen, dann kann es am Leben bleiben.	16 instructing them: “When you will act as a midwife to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery has arrived: if it is male, put it to death; if it is female, retain it.”
17 Die Hebammen aber fürchteten Gott und taten nicht, was ihnen der König von Ägypten gesagt hatte, sondern ließen die Kinder am Leben.	17 But the midwives feared God, and so they did not act according to the precept of the king of Egypt, but they kept the males safe.
18 Da rief der König von Ägypten die Hebammen zu sich und sagte zu ihnen: Warum tut ihr das und lasst die Kinder am Leben?	18 And summoning them, the king said, “What did you intend to do, so that you would save the boys?”
19 Die Hebammen antworteten dem Pharao: Bei den hebräischen Frauen ist es nicht wie bei den Ägypterinnen, sondern wie bei den Tieren: Wenn die Hebamme zu ihnen kommt, haben sie schon geboren.	19 They responded: “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. For they themselves have the wisdom of a midwife, and so they give birth before we can come to them.”
20 Gott verhalf den Hebammen zu Glück; das Volk aber vermehrte sich weiter und wurde sehr stark.	20 Therefore, God acted favorably toward the midwives. And the people increased, and they were strengthened exceedingly.
21 Weil die Hebammen Gott fürchteten, schenkte er ihnen Kindersegen.	21 And because the midwives feared God, he built houses for them.
22 Daher gab der Pharao seinem ganzen Volk den Befehl: Alle Knaben, die den Hebräern geboren werden, werft in den Nil! Die Mädchen dürft ihr alle am Leben lassen.	22 Therefore, Pharaoh instructed all his people, saying: “Whatever will be born of the male sex, cast it into the river; whatever will be born of the female sex, retain it.”
