1 Der Zorn des Herrn entbrannte noch einmal gegen Israel und er reizte David gegen das Volk auf und sagte: Geh, zähl Israel und Juda!	1 And the anger of the Lord was again kindled against Israel, and stirred up David among them, saying: Go, number Israel and Juda.
2 Der König befahl Joab, dem Obersten des Heeres, der bei ihm war: Durchstreift alle Stämme Israels von Dan bis Beerscheba, und mustert das Volk, damit ich weiß, wie viele es sind.	2 And the king said to Joab the general of his army: Go through all the tribes of Israel from Dan to Bersabee, and number ye the people that I may know the number of them.
3 Joab aber sagte zum König: Der Herr, dein Gott, möge das Volk vermehren, hundertmal mehr, als es jetzt ist, und mein Herr, der König, möge es mit eigenen Augen sehen. Warum aber hat mein Herr, der König, Gefallen an einer solchen Sache?	3 And Joab said to the king: The Lord thy God increase thy people, and make them as many more as they are now, and again multiply them a hundredfold in the sight of my lord the king: but what meaneth my lord the king by this kind of thing?
4 Doch der König beharrte gegenüber Joab und den Anführern des Heeres auf seinem Befehl und Joab und die Anführer des Heeres verließen den König, um das Volk Israel zu mustern.	4 But the king's words prevailed over the words of Joab, and of the captains of the army: and Joab, and the captains of the soldiers went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.
5 Sie überschritten den Jordan und begannen bei Aroër, rechts von der Stadt, die mitten im Tal liegt. Dann gingen sie auf Gad und Jaser zu	5 And when they had passed the Jordan, they came to Aroer to the right side of the city, which is in the vale of Gad.
6 und weiter nach Gilead und ins Land der Hetiter nach Kadesch. Von dort aus zogen sie nach Dan und von Dan wandten sie sich nach Sidon.	6 And by Jazer they passed into Galaad, and to the lower land of Hodsi, and they came into the woodlands of Dan. And going about by Sidon,
7 Dann kamen sie zur Festung Tyrus und zu all den Städten der Hiwiter und der Kanaaniter. Darauf zogen sie in den Negeb von Juda hinab nach Beerscheba.	7 They passed near the walls of Tyre, and all the land of the Hevite, and the Chanaanite, and they came to the south of Juda into Bersabee:
8 So durchstreiften sie das ganze Land und kamen nach neun Monaten und zwanzig Tagen wieder nach Jerusalem zurück.	8 And having gone through the whole land, after nine months and twenty days, they came to Jerusalem.
9 Und Joab gab dem König das Ergebnis der Volkszählung bekannt: Israel zählte achthunderttausend Krieger, die mit dem Schwert kämpfen konnten, und Juda fünfhunderttausend.	9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people to the king, and there were found of Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword: and of Juda five hundred thousand fighting men.
10 Dann aber schlug David das Gewissen, weil er das Volk gezählt hatte, und er sagte zum Herrn: Ich habe schwer gesündigt, weil ich das getan habe. Doch vergib deinem Knecht seine Schuld, Herr; denn ich habe sehr unvernünftig gehandelt.	10 But David's heart struck him, after the people were numbered: and David said to the Lord: I have sinned very much in what I have done: but I pray thee, O Lord, to take away the iniquity of thy servant, because I have done exceeding foolishly.
11 Als David am Morgen aufstand, war bereits folgendes Wort des Herrn an den Propheten Gad, den Seher Davids, ergangen:	11 And David arose in the morning, and the word of the Lord came to Gad the prophet and the seer of David, saying:
12 Geh und sag zu David: So spricht der Herr: Dreierlei lege ich dir vor. Wähl dir eines davon! Das werde ich dir antun.	12 Go, and say to David: Thus saith the Lord: I give thee thy choice of three things, choose one of them which thou wilt, that I may do it to thee.
13 Gad kam zu David, teilte ihm das Wort mit und sagte: Was soll über dich kommen? Sieben Jahre Hungersnot in deinem Land? Oder drei Monate, in denen dich deine Feinde verfolgen und du vor ihnen fliehen musst? Oder soll drei Tage lang die Pest in deinem Land wüten? Überleg dir sehr genau, was ich dem, der mich gesandt hat, als Antwort überbringen soll.	13 And when Gad was come to David, he told him, saying: Either seven years of famine shall come to thee in thy land: or thou shalt flee three months before thy adversaries, and they shall pursue thee: or for three days there shall be a pestilence in thy land. Now therefore deliberate, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.
14 Da sagte David zu Gad: Ich habe große Angst. Wir wollen lieber dem Herrn in die Hände fallen, denn seine Barmherzigkeit ist groß; den Menschen aber möchte ich nicht in die Hände fallen.	14 And David said to Gad: I am in a great strait: but it is better that I should fall into the hands of the Lord (for his mercies are many) than into the hands of men.
15 Da ließ der Herr über Israel eine Pest kommen; sie dauerte von jenem Morgen an bis zu dem festgesetzten Zeitpunkt und es starben zwischen Dan und Beerscheba siebzigtausend Menschen im Volk.	15 And the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel, from the morning unto the time appointed, and there died of the people from Dan to Bersabee seventy thousand men.
16 Als der Engel seine Hand gegen Jerusalem ausstreckte, um es ins Verderben zu stürzen, reute den Herrn das Unheil und er sagte zu dem Engel, der das Volk ins Verderben stürzte: Es ist jetzt genug, lass deine Hand sinken! Der Engel war gerade bei der Tenne des Jebusiters Arauna.	16 And when the angel of the Lord had stretched out his hand over Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord had pity on the affliction, and said to the angel that slew the people: It is enough: now hold thy hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the thrashingfloor of Areuna the Jebusite.
17 Als David den Engel sah, der das Volk schlug, sagte er zum Herrn: Ich bin es doch, der gesündigt hat; ich bin es, der sich vergangen hat. Aber diese, die Herde, was haben denn sie getan? Erheb deine Hand gegen mich und gegen das Haus meines Vaters!	17 And David said to the Lord, when he saw the angel striking the people: It is I; I am he that have sinned, I have done wickedly: these that are the sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I beseech thee, be turned against me, and against my father's house.
18 Am gleichen Tag kam Gad zu David und sagte zu ihm: Geh hinauf und errichte dem Herrn auf der Tenne des Jebusiters Arauna einen Altar!	18 And Gad came to David that day, and said: Go up, and build an altar to the Lord in the thrashingfloor of Areuna the Jebusite.
19 David ging hinauf, wie es Gad gesagt und der Herr befohlen hatte.	19 And David went up according to the word of Gad which the Lord had commanded him.
20 Arauna hielt gerade Ausschau und sah den König mit seinen Dienern kommen. Er ging hinaus, warf sich vor dem König mit dem Gesicht zur Erde nieder	20 And Areuna looked, and saw the king and his servants coming towards him:
21 und sagte: Warum kommt mein Herr, der König, zu seinem Knecht? David antwortete: Um von dir die Tenne zu kaufen und dem Herrn einen Altar zu errichten, damit die Plage im Volk aufhört.	21 An going out he worshipped the king, bowing with his face to the earth, and said: Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? Arid David said to him: To buy the thrashingfloor of thee, and build an altar to the Lord, that the plague, which rageth among the people, may cease.
22 Arauna antwortete David: Mein Herr, der König, möge alles nehmen, was er für gut findet, und es (als Opfer) darbringen. Sieh her, hier sind die Rinder für das Brandopfer und die Dreschschlitten und das Geschirr der Rinder als Brennholz.	22 And Areuna said to David: Let my lord the king take, and offer, as it seemeth good to him: thou hast here oxen for a holocaust, and the wain, and the yokes of the oxen for wood.
23 Das alles gab [der König] Arauna dem König und sagte zu ihm: Der Herr, dein Gott, sei dir gnädig.	23 All these things Areuna as a king gave to the king: and Areuna said to the king: The Lord thy God receive thy vow.
24 Der König erwiderte Arauna: Nein, ich will es dir gegen Bezahlung abkaufen; ich will dem Herrn, meinem Gott, keine unbezahlten Brandopfer darbringen. David kaufte also die Tenne und die Rinder für fünfzig Silberschekel.	24 And the king answered him, and said: Nay, but I will buy it of thee at a price, and I will not offer to the Lord my God holocausts free cost. So David bought the floor, and the oxen, for fifty sicles of silver:
25 Und er baute dort einen Altar für den Herrn und brachte Brandopfer und Heilsopfer dar; der Herr aber ließ sich um des Landes willen erweichen und die Plage hörte auf in Israel.	25 And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered holocausts and peace offerings: and the Lord became merciful to the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
