1 Darum schickte der Herr den Natan zu David; dieser ging zu David und sagte zu ihm: In einer Stadt lebten einst zwei Männer; der eine war reich, der andere arm.	1 Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And when he had come to him, he said to him: “Two men were in one city: one wealthy, and the other poor.
2 Der Reiche besaß sehr viele Schafe und Rinder,	2 The wealthy man had very many sheep and oxen.
3 der Arme aber besaß nichts außer einem einzigen kleinen Lamm, das er gekauft hatte. Er zog es auf und es wurde bei ihm zusammen mit seinen Kindern groß. Es aß von seinem Stück Brot und es trank aus seinem Becher, in seinem Schoß lag es und war für ihn wie eine Tochter.	3 But the poor man had nothing at all, except one little sheep, which he had bought and nourished. And she had grown up before him, together with his children, eating from his bread, and drinking from his cup, and sleeping in his bosom. And she was like a daughter to him.
4 Da kam ein Besucher zu dem reichen Mann und er brachte es nicht über sich, eines von seinen Schafen oder Rindern zu nehmen, um es für den zuzubereiten, der zu ihm gekommen war. Darum nahm er dem Armen das Lamm weg und bereitete es für den Mann zu, der zu ihm gekommen war.	4 But when a certain traveler had come to the wealthy man, neglecting to take from his own sheep and oxen, so that he might present a feast for that traveler, who had come to him, he took the sheep of the poor man, and he prepared a meal for the man who had come to him.”
5 Da geriet David in heftigen Zorn über den Mann und sagte zu Natan: So wahr der Herr lebt: Der Mann, der das getan hat, verdient den Tod.	5 Then David’s indignation was enraged exceedingly against that man, and he said to Nathan: “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this is a son of death.
6 Das Lamm soll er vierfach ersetzen, weil er das getan und kein Mitleid gehabt hat.	6 He shall restore the sheep fourfold, because he did this word, and he did not take pity.”
7 Da sagte Natan zu David: Du selbst bist der Mann. So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Ich habe dich zum König von Israel gesalbt und ich habe dich aus der Hand Sauls gerettet.	7 But Nathan said to David: “You are that man. Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘I anointed you as king over Israel, and I rescued you from the hand of Saul.
8 Ich habe dir das Haus deines Herrn und die Frauen deines Herrn in den Schoß gegeben und ich habe dir das Haus Israel und Juda gegeben, und wenn das zu wenig ist, gebe ich dir noch manches andere dazu.	8 And I gave the house of your lord to you, and the wives of your lord into your bosom. And I gave the house of Israel and of Judah to you. And as if these things were small, I shall add much greater things to you.
9 Aber warum hast du das Wort des Herrn verachtet und etwas getan, was ihm missfällt? Du hast den Hetiter Urija mit dem Schwert erschlagen und hast dir seine Frau zur Frau genommen; durch das Schwert der Ammoniter hast du ihn umgebracht.	9 Therefore, why have you despised the word of the Lord, so that you did evil in my sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword. And you have taken his wife as a wife for yourself. And you have put him to death with the sword of the sons of Ammon.
10 Darum soll jetzt das Schwert auf ewig nicht mehr von deinem Haus weichen; denn du hast mich verachtet und dir die Frau des Hetiters genommen, damit sie deine Frau werde.	10 For this reason, the sword shall not withdraw from your house, even perpetually, because you have despised me, and you have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite, so that she may be your wife.’
11 So spricht der Herr: Ich werde dafür sorgen, dass sich aus deinem eigenen Haus das Unheil gegen dich erhebt, und ich werde dir vor deinen Augen deine Frauen wegnehmen und sie einem andern geben; er wird am hellen Tag bei deinen Frauen liegen.	11 And so, thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will raise up over you an evil from your own house. And I will take your wives away before your eyes, and I will give them to your neighbor. And he will sleep with your wives in the sight of this sun.
12 Ja, du hast es heimlich getan, ich aber werde es vor ganz Israel und am hellen Tag tun.	12 For you acted secretly. But I will do this word in the sight of all of Israel, and in the sight of the sun.’ ”
13 Darauf sagte David zu Natan: Ich habe gegen den Herrn gesündigt. Natan antwortete David: Der Herr hat dir deine Sünde vergeben; du wirst nicht sterben.	13 And David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David: “The Lord has also taken away your sin. You shall not die.
14 Weil du aber die Feinde des Herrn durch diese Sache zum Lästern veranlasst hast, muss der Sohn, der dir geboren wird, sterben.	14 Yet truly, because you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, because of this word, the son who was born to you: dying he shall die.”
15 Dann ging Natan nach Hause. Der Herr aber ließ das Kind, das die Frau des Urija dem David geboren hatte, schwer krank werden.	15 And Nathan returned to his own house. And the Lord struck the little one, whom the wife of Uriah had borne to David, and he was despaired of.
16 David suchte Gott wegen des Knaben auf und fastete streng; und wenn er heimkam, legte er sich bei Nacht auf die bloße Erde.	16 And David begged the Lord on behalf of the little one. And David fasted strictly, and entering alone, he lay upon the ground.
17 Die Ältesten seines Hauses kamen zu ihm, um ihn dazu zu bewegen, von der Erde aufzustehen. Er aber wollte nicht und aß auch nicht mit ihnen.	17 Then the elders of his house came, urging him to rise up from the ground. And he was not willing, nor would he eat a meal with them.
18 Am siebten Tag aber starb das Kind. Davids Diener fürchteten sich, ihm mitzuteilen, dass das Kind tot war; denn sie sagten: Wir haben ihm zugeredet, als das Kind noch am Leben war; er aber hat nicht auf uns gehört. Wie können wir ihm jetzt sagen: Das Kind ist tot? Er würde ein Unheil anrichten.	18 Then, on the seventh day, it happened that the infant died. And the servants of David were afraid to report to him that the little one had died. For they said: “Behold, when the child was still alive, we were speaking to him, but he would not listen to our voice. How much more will he afflict himself, if we tell him that the boy is dead?”
19 David jedoch sah, dass seine Diener miteinander flüsterten, und merkte daran, dass das Kind tot war. Er fragte seine Diener: Ist das Kind tot? Sie antworteten: Ja, es ist tot.	19 But when David had seen his servants whispering, he realized that the infant had died. And he said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” And they responded to him, “He is dead.”
20 Da erhob sich David von der Erde, wusch sich, salbte sich, wechselte seine Kleider, ging zum Haus des Herrn und warf sich (davor) nieder. Als er dann nach Hause zurückkehrte, verlangte er (zu essen). Man setzte ihm etwas vor und er aß.	20 Therefore, David rose up from the ground. And he washed and anointed himself. And when he had changed his clothing, he entered the house of the Lord, and he worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and he asked them to place bread before him, and he ate.
21 Da fragten ihn seine Diener: Was soll das bedeuten, was du getan hast? Als das Kind noch am Leben war, hast du seinetwegen gefastet und geweint. Nachdem aber das Kind tot ist, stehst du auf und isst.	21 But his servants said to him: “What is this word that you have done? You fasted and were weeping, on behalf of the infant, while he was still alive. But when the boy was dead, you arose and ate bread.”
22 Er antwortete: Als das Kind noch am Leben war, habe ich gefastet und geweint; denn ich dachte: Wer weiß, vielleicht ist der Herr mir gnädig und das Kind bleibt am Leben.	22 And he said: “While he was yet alive, I fasted and wept on behalf of the infant. For I said: Who knows if the Lord may perhaps give him to me, and let the infant live?
23 Jetzt aber, da es tot ist, warum soll ich da noch fasten? Kann ich es zurückholen? Ich werde einmal zu ihm gehen, aber es kommt nicht zu mir zurück.	23 But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Would I be able to bring him back anymore? Instead, I will go to him. Yet truly, he will not return to me.”
24 Und David tröstete seine Frau Batseba; er ging zu ihr hinein und schlief mit ihr. Und sie gebar einen Sohn und er gab ihm den Namen Salomo. Der Herr liebte Salomo	24 And David consoled his wife Bathsheba. And entering to her, he slept with her. And she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon, and the Lord loved him.
25 und sandte den Propheten Natan, damit er ihm um des Herrn willen den Namen Jedidja (Liebling des Herrn) gebe.	25 And he sent, by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he called his name, Beloved of the Lord, because the Lord loved him.
26 Joab kämpfte gegen Rabba, (die Stadt) der Ammoniter, und er eroberte die Königsstadt.	26 And then Joab fought against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon, and he fought outside the royal city.
27 Darauf schickte Joab Boten zu David und ließ ihm sagen: Ich habe gegen Rabba gekämpft und dabei auch die Wasserstadt eingenommen.	27 And Joab sent messengers to David, saying: “I have struggled against Rabbah, and so the City of Waters will soon be seized.
28 Darum versammle jetzt den Rest des Heeres, belagere die Stadt und nimm sie selbst ein, damit nicht ich sie einnehme und mein Name über ihr ausgerufen wird.	28 Now therefore, gather the remaining portion of the people together, and besiege the city and take it. Otherwise, when the city will have been laid waste by me, the victory will be ascribed to my name.”
29 David sammelte also das ganze Heer, zog nach Rabba, kämpfte gegen die Stadt und nahm sie ein.	29 And so David gathered together all the people, and he set out against Rabbah. And after he had fought, he seized it.
30 Dann nahm er ihrem König die Krone vom Haupt, deren Gewicht ein Talent Gold betrug und an der ein kostbarer Stein war; sie wurde nun Davids Krone. Und er schaffte eine sehr große Beute aus der Stadt fort.	30 And he took the crown of their king from his head. The weight of it was a talent of gold, having the most precious gems. And it was placed upon the head of David. Moreover, he carried away the spoils of the city, which were very many.
31 Auch ihre Einwohner führte er fort und stellte sie an die Steinsägen, an die eisernen Spitzhacken und an die eisernen Äxte und ließ sie in den Ziegeleien arbeiten. So machte er es mit allen Städten der Ammoniter. Dann kehrte David mit dem ganzen Heer nach Jerusalem zurück.	31 Also, bringing forth its people, he sawed them, and he drove over them with iron wagons, and he divided them with knives, and he dragged them through brick kilns. So he did to all the citizens of the sons of Ammon. And David returned, with the entire army, to Jerusalem.
