1 Josef ging also hin, berichtete dem Pharao und sagte: Mein Vater und meine Brüder sind mit ihren Schafen, Ziegen und Rindern und mit allem, was ihnen gehört, aus Kanaan gekommen. Sie sind bereits in Goschen.	1 And so Joseph entered and reported to Pharaoh, saying: “My father and brothers, their sheep and herds, and everything that they possess, have arrived from the land of Canaan. And behold, they stand together in the land of Goshen.”
2 Aus dem Kreis seiner Brüder hatte er fünf Männer mitgebracht und stellte sie dem Pharao vor.	2 Likewise, he stood in the sight of the king five men, the last of his brothers.
3 Der Pharao fragte Josefs Brüder: Womit beschäftigt ihr euch? Sie antworteten dem Pharao: Hirten von Schafen und Ziegen sind deine Knechte; wir sind es und unsere Väter waren es auch schon.	3 And he questioned them, “What do you have for work?” They responded: “Your servants are pastors of sheep, both we and our fathers.
4 Weiter sagten sie zum Pharao: Wir sind gekommen, um uns als Fremde im Land aufzuhalten. Es gibt ja keine Weide für das Vieh deiner Knechte, denn schwer lastet die Hungersnot auf Kanaan. Nun möchten sich deine Knechte in Goschen niederlassen.	4 We came to sojourn in your land, because there is no grass for the flocks of your servants, the famine being very grievous in the land of Canaan. And we petition you that you may order us, your servants, to be in the land of Goshen.”
5 Darauf sagte der Pharao zu Josef: Dein Vater und deine Brüder sind also zu dir gekommen.	5 And so the king said to Joseph: “Your father and brothers have come to you.
6 Ägypten steht dir offen. Im besten Teil des Landes lass deinen Vater und deine Brüder wohnen! Sie sollen sich in Goschen niederlassen. Wenn du aber unter ihnen tüchtige Leute kennst, dann setze sie als Aufseher über meine Herden ein!	6 The land of Egypt is in your sight. Cause them to live in the best place, and deliver to them the land of Goshen. And if you know there to be industrious men among them, appoint these as foremen over my cattle.”
7 Darauf führte Josef seinen Vater Jakob hinein und stellte ihn dem Pharao vor. Jakob grüßte den Pharao mit einem Segenswunsch.	7 After this, Joseph brought in his father to the king, and he stood him in his sight. He blessed him,
8 Der Pharao redete Jakob an: Wie viele Lebensjahre zählst du?	8 and he questioned him: “How many are the days of the years of your life?”
9 Jakob gab dem Pharao zur Antwort: Die Zahl der Jahre meiner Pilgerschaft beträgt hundertdreißig. Gering an Zahl und unglücklich waren meine Lebensjahre und sie reichen nicht heran an die Lebensjahre meiner Väter in den Tagen ihrer Pilgerschaft.	9 He responded, “The days of my sojourn are one hundred and thirty years, few and unworthy, and they do not reach even to the days of the sojourning of my fathers.”
10 Jakob verabschiedete sich vom Pharao mit einem Segenswunsch.	10 And blessing the king, he went outside.
11 Josef siedelte seinen Vater und seine Brüder an und wies ihnen den Grundbesitz in Ägypten zu, im besten Teil des Landes, im Gebiet von Ramses, wie der Pharao verfügt hatte.	11 Truly, Joseph gave his father and brothers a possession in Egypt, in the best place of the land, in Rameses, as Pharaoh had instructed.
12 Josef versorgte seinen Vater und seine Brüder und das ganze Haus seines Vaters mit so viel Brot, dass die Kinder genug zu essen hatten.	12 And he fed them, along with all his father’s house, providing portions of food to each one.
13 Im ganzen Land gab es kein Brot und der Hunger war sehr drückend. Ägypten und Kanaan waren vor Hunger erschöpft.	13 For in the whole world there was a lack of bread, and a famine had oppressed the land, most of all Egypt and Canaan,
14 Josef hatte das Geld, das in Ägypten und in Kanaan im Umlauf war, für das Getreide, das sie kaufen mussten, eingezogen und in den Palast des Pharao gebracht.	14 from which he gathered together all the money for the grain that they bought, and he took it into the treasury of the king.
15 So war das Geld in Ägypten und Kanaan ausgegangen. Alle Ägypter kamen zu Josef und sagten: Gib uns Brot! Warum sollen wir vor deinen Augen umkommen? Das Geld ist nämlich zu Ende.	15 And when the buyers had run out of money, all Egypt came to Joseph, saying: “Give us bread. Why should we die in your sight, lacking money?”
16 Liefert euer Vieh ab, sagte Josef, dann gebe ich euch dafür Brot, wenn das Geld zu Ende ist.	16 And he responded to them: “Bring me your cattle, and I will give food to you in exchange for them, if you do not have money.”
17 So brachten sie ihr Vieh zu Josef und Josef verkaufte ihnen Brot um den Preis der Pferde, ihrer Bestände an Schafen und Ziegen, an Rindern und Eseln. Er versorgte die Leute also in jenem Jahr gegen ihren ganzen Viehbestand mit Brot.	17 And when they had brought them, he gave them food for their horses, and sheep, and oxen, and donkeys. And he sustained them in that year in exchange for their cattle.
18 Das Jahr ging indes zu Ende und im nächsten Jahr kamen sie und sagten zu ihm: Wir können unserem Herrn nicht verhehlen, dass das Geld zu Ende und unser Viehbestand in den Besitz unseres Herrn übergegangen ist. Wie unser Herr sieht, haben wir nichts mehr als unsere Leiber und unser Ackerland.	18 Likewise, they came the second year, and they said to him: “We will not conceal from our lord that our money is gone; likewise our cattle are gone. Neither are you unaware that we have nothing left but our bodies and our land.
19 Warum sollen wir vor deinen Augen umkommen, wir selbst und auch unser Ackerland? Kauf uns und unsere Äcker um Brot! Wir und unser Ackerland wollen dem Pharao dienstbar sein. Stell Saatgut zur Verfügung, so werden wir am Leben bleiben, wir müssen dann nicht sterben und das Ackerland braucht nicht zu verkommen.	19 Therefore, why should you watch us die? Both we and our land will be yours. Buy us into royal servitude, but provide seed, lest by the dying off of cultivators the land be reduced to a wilderness.”
20 Josef kaufte also das ganze Ackerland der Ägypter für den Pharao auf; denn die Ägypter verkauften alle ihr Feld, weil sie der Hunger dazu zwang. So wurde das Land Eigentum des Pharao.	20 Therefore, Joseph bought all the land of Egypt, each one selling his possessions because of the magnitude of the famine. And he subjected it to Pharaoh,
21 Das Volk aber machte er ihm Leibeigen von einem Ende Ägyptens bis zum andern.	21 along with all of its people, from the newest borders of Egypt, even to its furthest limits,
22 Nur das Ackerland der Priester kaufte er nicht auf, denn den Priestern steht ein festes Einkommen vom Pharao zu; sie leben von dem festen Einkommen, das ihnen der Pharao gewährt. Darum brauchten sie ihr Ackerland nicht zu verkaufen.	22 except the land of the priests, which had been delivered to them by the king. To these also a portion of food was supplied out of the public storehouses, and, for this reason, they were not compelled to sell their possessions.
23 Nun sprach Josef zum Volk: Seht, heute habe ich euch und euer Ackerland für den Pharao gekauft. Hier habt ihr Saatgut; bestellt nun die Äcker!	23 Therefore, Joseph said to the people: “So, as you discern, both you and your lands are possessed by Pharaoh; take seed and sow the fields,
24 Vom Ertrag liefert ihr dann ein Fünftel dem Pharao ab, vier Teile aber gehören euch als Saatgut für das Feld sowie als Nahrung für euch, für die Leute in euren Häusern und für eure Kinder.	24 so that you may be able to have grain. One fifth part you will give to the king; the remaining four I permit to you, as seed and as food for your families and children.
25 Da antworteten sie: Du hast uns am Leben erhalten. Wenn wir das Wohlwollen unseres Herrn finden, wollen wir gern dem Pharao als Knechte dienen.	25 And they responded: “Our health is in your hand; only let our lord look kindly upon us, and we will serve the king with gladness.”
26 So verfügte Josef als gültiges Recht bis auf den heutigen Tag, dass das Ackerland Ägyptens zugunsten des Pharao mit einem Fünftel zu besteuern ist. Nur die Äcker der Priester wurden nicht Eigentum des Pharao.	26 From that time, even to the present day, in the entire land of Egypt, the fifth part is turned over to the kings, and it has become like a law, except in the land of the priests, which was free from this condition.
27 Israel ließ sich in Ägypten nieder, in der Landschaft Goschen. Sie wurden dort ansässig, waren fruchtbar und vermehrten sich sehr.	27 And so, Israel lived in Egypt, that is, in the land of Goshen, and he possessed it. And he increased and was multiplied exceedingly.
28 Jakob lebte noch siebzehn Jahre in Ägypten und die Tage Jakobs, seine Lebensjahre, betrugen hundertsiebenundvierzig Jahre.	28 And he lived in it seventeen years. And all the days of his life that passed were one hundred and forty-seven years.
29 Als die Zeit kam, da Israel sterben sollte, rief er seinen Sohn Josef und sagte zu ihm: Wenn ich dein Wohlwollen gefunden habe, leg deine Hand unter meine Hüfte, dass du nach Treu und Glauben an mir handeln wirst: Begrab mich nicht in Ägypten!	29 And when he discerned that the day of his death was approaching, he called his son Joseph, and he said to him: “If I have found favor in your sight, place your hand under my thigh. And you shall show me mercy and truth, not to bury me in Egypt.
30 Bin ich zu meinen Vätern entschlafen, dann bring mich fort aus Ägypten und begrab mich in der Grabstätte meiner Väter! Er antwortete: Ich will tun, wie du gesagt hast.	30 But I shall sleep with my fathers, and you will carry me from this land and bury me in the sepulcher of my ancestors.” And Joseph answered him, “I will do what you have ordered.”
31 Da sagte Jakob: Leiste mir einen Eid! Er leistete ihm den Eid. Darauf neigte sich Israel über das Kopfende seines Bettes.	31 And he said, “Then swear it to me.” And as he was swearing, Israel adored God, turning to the head of his resting place.
