1 Abraham brach von dort auf und zog in den Negeb. Er ließ sich zwischen Kadesch und Schur nieder und hielt sich in Gerar als Fremder auf.	1 Abraham advanced from there into the southern land, and he lived between Kadesh and Shur. And he sojourned in Gerar.
2 Abraham behauptete von Sara, seiner Frau: Sie ist meine Schwester. Da schickte Abimelech, der König von Gerar, hin und ließ Sara holen.	2 And he said about his wife Sarah: “She is my sister.” Therefore, Abimelech, the king of Gerar, sent for her and took her.
3 Nachts kam Gott zu Abimelech und sprach zu ihm im Traum: Du musst sterben wegen der Frau, die du dir genommen hast; sie ist verheiratet.	3 Then God came to Abimelech through a dream in the night, and he said to him: “Lo, you shall die because of the woman that you have taken. For she has a husband.”
4 Abimelech aber war ihr noch nicht nahe gekommen. Mein Herr, sagte er, willst du denn auch unschuldige Leute umbringen?	4 In truth, Abimelech had not touched her, and so he said: “Lord, would you put to death a people, ignorant and just?
5 Hat er mir nicht gesagt, sie sei seine Schwester? Auch sie selbst hat behauptet, er sei ihr Bruder. Mit arglosem Herzen und mit reinen Händen habe ich das getan.	5 Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister,’ and did she not say, ‘He is my brother?’ In the sincerity of my heart and the purity of my hands, I have done this.”
6 Da sprach Gott zu ihm im Traum: Auch ich weiß, dass du es mit arglosem Herzen getan hast. Ich habe dich ja auch daran gehindert, dich gegen mich zu verfehlen. Darum habe ich nicht zugelassen, dass du sie anrührst.	6 And God said to him: “And I know that you have acted with a sincere heart. And therefore I kept you from sinning against me, and I did not release you to touch her.
7 Jetzt aber gib die Frau dem Mann zurück; denn er ist ein Prophet. Er wird für dich eintreten, dass du am Leben bleibst. Gibst du sie aber nicht zurück, dann sollst du wissen: Du musst sterben, du und alles, was dir gehört.	7 Now therefore, return his wife to the man, for he is a prophet. And he will pray for you, and you will live. But if you are not willing to return her, know this: you shall die a death, you and all that is yours.”
8 Am Morgen stand Abimelech auf, ließ alle seine Untergebenen rufen und erzählte ihnen alles, was vorgefallen war. Da gerieten die Männer in große Furcht.	8 And immediately Abimelech, rising up in the night, called all his servants. And he spoke all these words in their hearing, and all the men were very afraid.
9 Nun ließ Abimelech Abraham rufen und stellte ihn zur Rede: Was hast du uns angetan? Womit habe ich denn gegen dich gefehlt, dass du über mich und mein Reich eine so große Sünde bringst? Du hast mir etwas angetan, was man nicht tun darf.	9 Then Abimelech called also for Abraham, and he said to him: “What have you done to us? How have we sinned against you, so that you would bring so great a sin upon me and upon my kingdom? You have done to us what you ought not to have done.”
10 Und Abimelech fragte Abraham: Was hattest du vor, als du das tatest?	10 And remonstrating him again, he said, “What did you see, so that you would do this?”
11 Abraham entgegnete: Ich sagte mir: Vielleicht gibt es keine Gottesfurcht an diesem Ort und man wird mich wegen meiner Frau umbringen.	11 Abraham responded: “I thought to myself, saying: Perhaps there is no fear of God in this place. And they will put me to death because of my wife.
12 Übrigens ist sie wirklich meine Schwester, eine Tochter meines Vaters, nur nicht eine Tochter meiner Mutter; so konnte sie meine Frau werden.	12 Yet, in another way, she is also truly my sister, the daughter of my father, and not the daughter of my mother, and I took her as a wife.
13 Als mich aber Gott aus dem Haus meines Vaters ins Ungewisse ziehen hieß, schlug ich ihr vor: Tu mir den Gefallen und sag von mir überall, wohin wir kommen: Er ist mein Bruder.	13 Then, after God led me out of my father’s house, I said to her: ‘You will show this mercy to me. In every place, to which we will travel, you will say that I am your brother.’ ”
14 Darauf nahm Abimelech Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder, Knechte und Mägde und schenkte sie Abraham. Auch gab er ihm seine Frau Sara zurück;	14 Therefore, Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and men servants and women servants, and he gave them to Abraham. And he returned his wife Sarah to him.
15 dabei sagte Abimelech: Hier, mein Land steht dir offen. Wo es dir beliebt, da lass dich nieder!	15 And he said, “The land is in your sight. Dwell wherever it will please you.”
16 Zu Sara aber sagte er: Da, ich gebe deinem Bruder tausend Silberstücke. Das soll allen Leuten in deiner Umgebung die Augen zudecken und vor allen erfährst du Genugtuung.	16 Then to Sarah he said: “Behold, I have given your brother one thousand silver coins. This will be for you as a veil for your eyes, to all who are with you and wherever you will travel. And so, remember that you were taken.”
17 Abraham trat für ihn bei Gott ein; da heilte Gott Abimelech, auch seine Frau und seine Dienerinnen, sodass sie wieder gebären konnten.	17 Then when Abraham prayed, God healed Abimelech and his wife, and his handmaids, and they gave birth.
18 Denn der Herr hatte im Haus Abimelech jeden Mutterschoß verschlossen wegen Sara, der Frau Abrahams.	18 For the Lord had closed every womb of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, the wife of Abraham.
