DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
Be ye children of the Lord your God: you shall not cut yourselves, no, make any baldness for the dead;1 'You are children of Yahweh your God. You must not gash yourselves or shave your foreheads for thedead.
Because thou art a holy people to the Lord thy God: and he chose thee to be his peculiar people of all nations that are upon the earth.2 For you are a people consecrated to Yahweh your God, and Yahweh has chosen you to be his ownpeople from al the peoples on the earth.
Eat not the things that are unclean.3 'You must not eat anything disgusting.
These are the beasts that you shall eat, the ox, and the sheep, and the goat,4 These are the animals you may eat: ox, sheep, goat,
The hart and the roe, the buffle, the chamois, the pygarg, the wild goat, the camelopardalus.5 deer, gazel e, roebuck, ibex, antelope, oryx, mountain sheep.
Every beast that divideth the hoof in two parts, and cheweth the cud, you shall eat.6 You may eat any animal that has a divided and cloven hoof and that is a ruminant.
But of them that chew the cud, but divide not the hoof, you shall not eat, such as the camel, the hare, and the cherogril: because they chew the cud, but divide not the hoof, they shall be unclean to you.7 Of those, however, that are ruminants and of those that have a divided and cloven hoof you may noteat the fol owing: the camel, the hare and the coney, which are ruminants but have no cloven hoof; you mustclass them as unclean.
The swine also, because it divideth the hoof, but cheweth not the cud, shall be unclean, their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch.8 So also the pig, which though it has a cloven hoof is not a ruminant; you must class it as unclean. Youmust neither eat the meat of such animals nor touch their dead bodies.
These shall you eat of all that abide in the waters: All that have fins and scales, you shall eat.9 'Of whatever lives in water you may eat the fol owing: you may eat anything that has fins and scales.
Such as are without fins and scales, you shall not eat, because they are unclean.10 But you must not eat anything without fins and scales: you must class it as unclean.
All birds that are clean you shall eat.11 'You may eat al clean birds,
The unclean eat not: to wit, the eagle, and the grype, and the osprey,12 but the fol owing birds you must not eat: the tawny vulture, the griffon, the osprey,
The ringtail, and the vulture, and the kite according to their kind:13 the kite and the several kinds of buzzard,
And all of the raven's kind:14 al kinds of raven,
And the ostrich, and the owl, and the larus, and the hawk according to its kind:15 the ostrich, the screech owl, the seagul , the several kinds of hawk,
The heron, and the swan, and the stork,16 owl, barn owl, ibis,
And the cormorant, the porphirion, and the night crow,17 pelican, white vulture, cormorant,
The bittern, and the charadrion, every one in their kind: the hoop also and the bat.18 stork, the several kinds of heron, hoopoe and bat.
Every thing that creepeth, and hath little wings, shall be unclean, and shall not be eaten.19 You are to class al winged insects as unclean and must not eat them.
All that is clean, you shall eat.20 You may eat any clean fowl.
But whatsoever is dead of itself, eat not thereof. Give it to the stranger, that is within thy gates, to eat, or sell it to him: because thou art the holy people of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not boil a kid in the milk of his dam.21 'You must not eat any animal that has died a natural death. You may give it to a resident foreigner toeat, or sel it to a foreigner. For you are a people consecrated to Yahweh your God. 'You must not boil a kid in itsmother's milk.
Every year thou shalt set aside the tithes of all thy fruits that the earth bringeth forth,22 'Every year, you must take a tithe of what your fields produce from what you have sown
And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose, that his name may be called upon therein, the tithe of thy corn, and thy wine, and thy oil, and the firstborn of thy herds and thy sheep: that thou mayst learn to fear the Lord thy God at all times.23 and, in the presence of Yahweh your God, in the place where he chooses to give his name a home, you must eat the tithe of your wheat, of your new wine and of your oil, and the first-born of your herd and flock;and by so doing, you wil learn always to fear Yahweh your God.
But when the way and the place which the Lord thy God shall choose, are far off, and he hath blessed thee, and thou canst not carry all these things thither,24 'If the road is too long for you, if you cannot bring your tithe because the place in which Yahwehchooses to make a home for his name is too far away, when Yahweh your God has blessed you,
Thou shalt sell them all, and turn them into money, and shalt carry it in thy hand, and shalt go to the place which the Lord shall choose :25 you must convert it into money and, with the money clasped in your hand, you must go to the placechosen by Yahweh your God;
And thou shalt buy with the same money whatsoever pleaseth thee, either of the herds or of sheep, wine also and strong drink, and all that thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God, and shalt feast, thou and thy house:26 there you may spend the money on whatever you like, oxen, sheep, wine, fermented liquor, anythingyou please. There you must eat in the presence of Yahweh your God and rejoice, you and your household.
And the Levite that is within thy gates, beware thou forsake him not, because he hath no other part in thy possession.27 Do not neglect the Levite living in your community, since he has no share or heritage of his ownamong you.
The third year thou shalt separate another tithe of all things that grow to thee at that time, and shalt lay it up within thy gates.28 'At the end of every three years, you must take al the tithes of your harvests for that year and col ectthem in your community.
And the Levite that hath no other part nor possession with thee, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow, that are within thy gates, shall come and shall eat and be filled: that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the works of thy hands that thou shalt do.29 Then the Levite -- since he has no share or heritage of his own among you -- the foreigner, theorphan and the widow living in your community, wil come and eat all they want. And so Yahweh your God wilbless you in al the labours that you undertake.'
