DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Be ye children of the Lord your God: you shall not cut yourselves, no, make any baldness for the dead;1 "You are children of the LORD, your God. You shall not gash yourselves nor shave the hair above your foreheads for the dead.
Because thou art a holy people to the Lord thy God: and he chose thee to be his peculiar people of all nations that are upon the earth.2 For you are a people sacred to the LORD, your God, who has chosen you from all the nations on the face of the earth to be a people peculiarly his own.
Eat not the things that are unclean.3 "You shall not eat any abominable thing.
These are the beasts that you shall eat, the ox, and the sheep, and the goat,4 These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,
The hart and the roe, the buffle, the chamois, the pygarg, the wild goat, the camelopardalus.5 the red deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the ibex, the addax, the oryx, and the mountain sheep.
Every beast that divideth the hoof in two parts, and cheweth the cud, you shall eat.6 Any animal that has hoofs you may eat, provided it is cloven-footed and chews the cud.
But of them that chew the cud, but divide not the hoof, you shall not eat, such as the camel, the hare, and the cherogril: because they chew the cud, but divide not the hoof, they shall be unclean to you.7 But you shall not eat any of the following that only chew the cud or only have cloven hoofs: the camel, the hare and the rock badger, which indeed chew the cud, but do not have hoofs and are therefore unclean for you;
The swine also, because it divideth the hoof, but cheweth not the cud, shall be unclean, their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch.8 and the pig, which indeed has hoofs and is cloven-footed, but does not chew the cud and is therefore unclean for you. Their flesh you shall not eat, and their dead bodies you shall not touch.
These shall you eat of all that abide in the waters: All that have fins and scales, you shall eat.9 "Of the various creatures that live in the water, whatever has both fins and scales you may eat,
Such as are without fins and scales, you shall not eat, because they are unclean.10 but all those that lack either fins or scales you shall not eat; they are unclean for you.
All birds that are clean you shall eat.11 "You may eat all clean birds.
The unclean eat not: to wit, the eagle, and the grype, and the osprey,12 But you shall not eat any of the following: the eagle, the vulture, the osprey,
The ringtail, and the vulture, and the kite according to their kind:13 the various kites and falcons,
And all of the raven's kind:14 all the various species of crows,
And the ostrich, and the owl, and the larus, and the hawk according to its kind:15 the ostrich, the nightjar, the gull, the various species of hawks,
The heron, and the swan, and the stork,16 the owl, the screech owl, the ibis,
And the cormorant, the porphirion, and the night crow,17 the desert owl, the buzzard, the cormorant,
The bittern, and the charadrion, every one in their kind: the hoop also and the bat.18 the stork, the various species of herons, the hoopoe, and the bat.
Every thing that creepeth, and hath little wings, shall be unclean, and shall not be eaten.19 All winged insects, too, are unclean for you and shall not be eaten.
All that is clean, you shall eat.20 But you may eat any clean winged creatures.
But whatsoever is dead of itself, eat not thereof. Give it to the stranger, that is within thy gates, to eat, or sell it to him: because thou art the holy people of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not boil a kid in the milk of his dam.21 "You must not eat any animal that has died of itself, for you are a people sacred to the LORD, your God. But you may give it to an alien who belongs to your community, and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. "You shall not boil a kid in its mother's milk.
Every year thou shalt set aside the tithes of all thy fruits that the earth bringeth forth,22 "Each year you shall tithe all the produce that grows in the field you have sown;
And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose, that his name may be called upon therein, the tithe of thy corn, and thy wine, and thy oil, and the firstborn of thy herds and thy sheep: that thou mayst learn to fear the Lord thy God at all times.23 then in the place which the LORD, your God, chooses as the dwelling place of his name you shall eat in his presence your tithe of the grain, wine and oil, as well as the firstlings of your herd and flock, that you may learn always to fear the LORD, your God.
But when the way and the place which the Lord thy God shall choose, are far off, and he hath blessed thee, and thou canst not carry all these things thither,24 If, however, the journey is too much for you and you are not able to bring your tithe, because the place which the LORD, your God, chooses for the abode of his name is too far for you, considering how the LORD has blessed you,
Thou shalt sell them all, and turn them into money, and shalt carry it in thy hand, and shalt go to the place which the Lord shall choose :25 you may exchange the tithe for money and, with the purse of money in hand, go to the place which the LORD, your God, chooses.
And thou shalt buy with the same money whatsoever pleaseth thee, either of the herds or of sheep, wine also and strong drink, and all that thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God, and shalt feast, thou and thy house:26 You may then exchange the money for whatever you desire, oxen or sheep, wine or strong drink, or anything else you would enjoy, and there before the LORD, your God, you shall partake of it and make merry with your family.
And the Levite that is within thy gates, beware thou forsake him not, because he hath no other part in thy possession.27 But do not neglect the Levite who belongs to your community, for he has no share in the heritage with you.
The third year thou shalt separate another tithe of all things that grow to thee at that time, and shalt lay it up within thy gates.28 "At the end of every third year you shall bring out all the tithes of your produce for that year and deposit them in community stores,
And the Levite that hath no other part nor possession with thee, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow, that are within thy gates, shall come and shall eat and be filled: that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the works of thy hands that thou shalt do.29 that the Levite who has no share in the heritage with you, and also the alien, the orphan and the widow who belong to your community, may come and eat their fill; so that the LORD, your God, may bless you in all that you undertake.
