BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Giurarono eziandio i figliuoli d' Israel in Masfa, e dissono: niuno di noi darà ai figliuoli di Beniamin moglie delle sue figliuole.	1 The men of Israel had sworn this oath at Mizpah, 'None of us is to give his daughter in marriage toBenjamin.'
2 E vennero tutti quanti alla casa di Dio in Silo, e istando dinanzi da lui e sedendo d'insino al vespro, levarono alta voce, e con grande strido cominciarono a piangere, dicendo:	2 The people went to Bethel and stayed there until evening, sitting before God and raising their voices,made a great lament,
3 Perchè, Signore d' Israel, è fatto questo male nel popolo tuo, che una ischiatta sia oggi (ispenta e) levata di noi?	3 and exclaiming, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel that a tribe should be missingfrom Israel today?
4 Ma l'altro dì, levandosi in sul dì, sì fecero l'altare; e quivi sì offersono (i sacrifizii e) gli olocausti e ostie di pace, e dissero :	4 The next day the people got up early and built an altar there; they presented burnt offerings andcommunion sacrifices.
5 Chi non venne nell' oste di Dio Signore di tutta la universitade della schiatta (de' figliuoli) d' Israel? Imperciò che s'erano legati fortemente con giuramento, quando erano (rimasi) in Masfa, d' uccidere coloro che non vi fossero istati.	5 The Israelites then said, 'Out of al the tribes of Israel, who has not come to Yahweh, to the assembly?'-- for they had sworn a solemn oath that anyone who did not come to Yahweh at Mizpah would certainly die.
6 E tornati a penitenza i figliuoli d' Israel sopra il fratello loro Beniamin, cominciarono a dire: tolta (e levata) è una schiatta d' Israel.	6 Now the Israelites felt sorry about Benjamin their brother. 'Today', they said, 'a tribe has beenamputated from Israel.
7 Donde torranno le mogli? Tutti quanti giurammo (insieme e) di comune concordia, di non dare a costoro le nostre figliuole (per moglie).	7 What shall we do to provide wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by Yahweh not to givethem any of our own daughters in marriage?'
8 E però dissero: chi è di tutta la universitade de' figliuoli d' Israel, i quali non vennero a Dio in Masfa? Ed ecco che furono trovati gli abitatori di Iabes di Galaad, che non erano istati in quello oste.	8 They then asked, 'Out of the tribes of Israel, who is it that has not come to Yahweh at Mizpah?' It wasdiscovered that no one from Jabesh in Gilead had come to the camp for the assembly;
9 Onde in quello tempo, essendo loro in Silo, niuno di loro vi fu trovato.	9 for, a muster having been cal ed of the people, none of the inhabitants of Jabesh in Gilead waspresent.
10 E mandarono X milia (uomini combattitori e) robustissimi uomini, e sì comandarono loro: andate e uccidete gli uomini di Iabes di Galaad; tutti gli mettete alle coltella, (così gli uomini come) le femine loro, e ancora tutti i loro figliuoli (grandi e) piccoli.	10 The community then despatched twelve thousand of their bravest men there, with these orders: 'Goand slaughter all the inhabitants of Jabesh in Gilead, including the women and children.
11 E questo sarà quello che dovete osservare: tutti quanti quelli che sono maschii, e le femine che sono usate cogli uomini (ed hanno avuto a fare con loro) uccidete; e le vergini riservate.	11 This is what you are to do. Al males and al those women who have ever slept with a man, you wilput under the curse of destruction, but the lives of the virgins you wil spare.' And this they did.
12 E (così fecero com' era loro comandato, e) furono trovate CCCC vergini, le quali non conosceano usanza di uomo; e sì le menarono all' oste in Silo nella terra di Canaan.	12 Among the inhabitants of Jabesh in Gilead they found four hundred young virgins who had neverslept with a man, and brought them to the camp (to Shiloh in the territory of Canaan).
13 E furo mandati poi i messi ai figliuoli di Beniamin, i quali erano nella pietra di Remmon; e comandarono loro, che gli ricevessero pacificamente.	13 The whole community then sent messengers to offer peace to the Benjaminites who were at the Rockof Rimmon.
14 E vennero in quello tempo i figliuoli di Beniamin; e furono date loro le mogli delle figliuole di Iabes di Galaad; altre non trovarono, che simigliantemente potessero dare loro.	14 Benjamin then came home: they were given those of the women of Jabesh in Gilead whose lives hadbeen spared, but there were not enough for al .
15 E tutta quanta la università de' figliuoli d' Israel molto se ne dolseno, e feceno penitenza sopra la (morte e) uccisione d' una schiatta de' figliuoli d' Israel.	15 The people felt sorry about Benjamin, Yahweh having made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16 E dissono li maggiori di nazione (e più nobili): che faremo noi a quelli che sono rimasti e non hanno tolto moglie? Tutte quante le femine di Beniamin sono state morte.	16 And the elders of the community said, 'What shall we do to provide wives for the survivors, since thewomen of Benjamin have been wiped out?'
17 E a noi s' appartiene, con grande guardia e con grande sollecitudine sia provveduto, che una schiatta non si spenga (nè venga meno) d' Israel.	17 They went on, 'How can we preserve a remnant for Benjamin so that a tribe may not be lost to Israel?
18 Le nostre figliuole non possiamo dare loro, legati per giuramento e pella maledizione, che dicemmo: maledetto sia colui il quale darà delle sue figliuole per moglie ai figliuoli di Beniamin.	18 We cannot give them our own daughters in marriage' -- for the Israelites had taken an oath,'Accursed be the man who gives a wife to Benjamin!'
19 Ed ebbono il consiglio, e dissono: ecco che è tosto la solennità di Cristo in Silo, cioè l'anniversario (che si dee fare); ed è posto dalla parte di settentrione della città di Betel, e dalla parte dell' oriente della via la quale è di Betel e vanne alla città di Sichima, e dal mezzodi del castello di Lebona.	19 'However,' they said, 'there is the feast of Yahweh, held every year at Shiloh.' (The town lies north ofBethel, east of the highway that runs from Bethel up to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.)
20 E comandarono ai figliuoli di Beniamin, e dissono andate e nascondetevi nelle vigne.	20 So they told the Benjaminites to do as fol ows, 'Put yourselves in ambush in the vineyards.
21 E quando vederete le giovani di Silo menare la ridda e balli, sì come sogliono, uscite subitamente delle vigne, e pigliate ciascuno la sua moglie, e sì ve ne andate nella terra di Beniamin.	21 Keep watch: when the girls of Shiloh come out in groups to dance, you then come out of thevineyards, each of you seize a wife from the girls of Shiloh and make for Benjaminite territory.
22 E vegnendo (contro a voi) li padri loro e fratelli a cominciarsi a lamentare contro a voi e gridare, noi diremo loro: abbiate misericordia di loro, imperciò che non le hanno tolte per ragione di battaglia e di vincitori; ma pregando che le potessono torre per moglie, non [le] deste loro; onde dalla parte vostra si è (l' offesa e) il peccato.	22 If their fathers or brothers come and complain to us, we shall say, "Let us have them, since we couldnot take wives for everyone in the battle; and you could not give them to them, or you would then have beenguilty." '
23 E feciono li figliuoli di Beniamin sì come era stato loro comandato; secondo il numero loro sì pigliarono, di coloro che menavano la ridda e ballo, ciascuno la sua moglie; e sì n' andarono alla loro possessione, reedificando loro le cittadi, e abitandovi entro.	23 The Benjaminites did this and, from the dancers whom they caught, took as many wives as therewere men and then, setting off, went back to their heritage, rebuilt the towns and settled down in them.
24 E ancora i figliuoli d' Israel sì si tornarono ciascuno per schiatta. In quelli dì non era re in Israel; ma ciascuno quello che gli parea ben fatto sì facea.	24 The Israelites then dispersed, each man to rejoin his tribe and clan, each leaving that place for hisown heritage.
	25 In those days there was no king in Israel, and everyone did as he saw fit.
