| 1 Rispose Sofar Naamatite, e disse: | 1 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered: |
| 2 Or colui che molto favella, non udirà? Ovvero l'uomo, che sarà pieno di parole, sarà giustificato? | 2 "Should a multitude of words go unanswered, and a man full of talk be vindicated? |
| 3 A te solo taceranno li uomini? e quando avrai scherniti tutti li altri, da niuno sarai confutato? | 3 Should your babble silence men, and when you mock, shall no one shame you? |
| 4 Certo tu dicesti: pura è la parola mia, e mondo sono nel cospetto tuo. | 4 For you say, 'My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in God's eyes.' |
| 5 E Iddio il volesse, ch' elli favellasse teco, e aprisse i labbri suoi a te, | 5 But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips to you, |
| 6 acciò ch' elli mostrasse a te le secrete cose della sapienza, e che in molti modi fosse la legge sua qui; e intendessi che molte cose minori abbi da Dio, che non meriti la iniquitade tua. | 6 and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom! For he is manifold in understanding. Know then that God exacts of you less than your guilt deserves. |
| 7 Forse gli andamenti (suoi) di Dio comprenderai, e insino all' Onnipotente perfetto ritornerai? | 7 "Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty? |
| 8 Più alto è che il cielo; e che farai? più adentro che lo inferno; e donde lo conoscerai? | 8 It is higher than heaven --what can you do? Deeper than Sheol--what can you know? |
| 9 La misura sua è più lunga che la terra, larga più che il mare. | 9 Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. |
| 10 S'elli sovertisse ogni cosa, ovvero che insieme le raunasse chi (li) contraddirà a lui? (Ovvero chi li potrà dire: perchè fai tu così?) | 10 If he passes through, and imprisons, and calls to judgment, who can hinder him? |
| 11 In verità elli conosce la vanitade delli uomini; e vedendo la iniquitade, or non la considera? | 11 For he knows worthless men; when he sees iniquity, will he not consider it? |
| 12 L'uomo vano in superbia si dirizza; e sì come puledro dell' asino, così pensa essere nato libero. | 12 But a stupid man will get understanding, when a wild ass's colt is born a man. |
| 13 Ma tu fermasti lo cuore tuo, e spandesti a lui le tue mani. | 13 "If you set your heart aright, you will stretch out your hands toward him. |
| 14 Se la iniquitade, che è nelle tue mani, tu torrae da te, e non starae nel tabernacolo tuo la tua ingiustizia; | 14 If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in your tents. |
| 15 allora potrai levare la faccia tua senza macchia, e sarai stabile, e non temerai. | 15 Surely then you will lift up your face without blemish; you will be secure, and will not fear. |
| 16 E di ciascuna miseria ti dimenticherai; e sì come dell' acque che trapassorono, non ti ricorderai. | 16 You will forget your misery; you will remember it as waters that have passed away. |
| 17 E sì come lo splendore del mezzodì si leverà a te nel vespro; e quando penserai te essere consumato, risplenderai sì come la stella Diana. | 17 And your life will be brighter than the noonday; its darkness will be like the morning. |
| 18 E avrai proposto a te la speranza, e sepolto sicuro dormirai. | 18 And you will have confidence, because there is hope; you will be protected and take your rest in safety. |
| 19 Riposera'ti, e non sarà chi ti spaventi; e pregheranno la faccia tua molti. | 19 You will lie down, and none will make you afraid; many will entreat your favor. |
| 20 E li occhii degli maligni verranno meno, e lo fuggire perirae da loro, e la speranza loro (ad) abbominazione dell' anima. | 20 But the eyes of the wicked will fail; all way of escape will be lost to them, and their hope is to breathe their last." |
