| 2 Le quali contenevano in questo modo: lo re Antioco a Simone, grande sacerdote, e alla gente Giudea salute. | 2 its contents were as follows: "King Antiochus to Simon the high priest and ethnarch and to the nation of the Jews, greeting. |
| 3 Imperciò che uomini malvagi hanno occupato lo reame de' nostri padri, e io voglio vendicare lo reame e ritornare come era di prima, io hoe fatta una radunata di moltitudine d' oste, e ho fatte navi da combattere. | 3 Whereas certain pestilent men have gained control of the kingdom of our fathers, and I intend to lay claim to the kingdom so that I may restore it as it formerly was, and have recruited a host of mercenary troops and have equipped warships, |
| 4 E però voglio andare inanzi per la contrada, e vendicherommi di coloro che hanno corrotta la nostra regione, e che hanno guaste molte cittadi nel mio reame. | 4 and intend to make a landing in the country so that I may proceed against those who have destroyed our country and those who have devastated many cities in my kingdom, |
| 5 E però io ti concedo tutte l'offerte le quali ti rilasciarono li re dinanzi da me, e tutti gli altri doni i quali ti concedettono. | 5 now therefore I confirm to you all the tax remissions that the kings before me have granted you, and release from all the other payments from which they have released you. |
| 6 E permetto che nella vostra regione si faccia moneta al proprio vostro sigillo. | 6 I permit you to mint your own coinage as money for your country, |
| 7 E voglio che Ierusalem sia santa e libera, e che tu abbi e tenghi tutte l'armi che qui sono fabbricate, e tutte le fortezze che t'hai fatte, e rimangati quelle cose che tu tieni. | 7 and I grant freedom to Jerusalem and the sanctuary. All the weapons which you have prepared and the strongholds which you have built and now hold shall remain yours. |
| 8 E rilascio a te ogni regale debito, e che per inanzi si dee dare al re, e per ora e per lo tempo che deve venire. | 8 Every debt you owe to the royal treasury and any such future debts shall be canceled for you from henceforth and for all time. |
| 9 E (però ti manifesto, che) quando riaveremo il nostro reame, noi faremo glorioso te e la tua gente, e il tuo tempio adorneremo di gloria, acciò che la vostra gloria sia manifesta per tutto il mondo. | 9 When we gain control of our kingdom, we will bestow great honor upon you and your nation and the temple, so that your glory will become manifest in all the earth." |
| 10 Nel CLXXIIII anno (del regno de' Greci) Antioco venne nella terra de' suoi padri; e tutta l'oste del reame lo seguitava, sì che pochi ne rimasono con Trifone. | 10 In the one hundred and seventy-fourth year * Antiochus set out and invaded the land of his fathers. All the troops rallied to him, so that there were few with Trypho. |
| 11 E lo re Antioco lui perseguitava; e Trifone se ne venne a Dora per la marina. | 11 Antiochus pursued him, and he came in his flight to Dor, which is by the sea; |
| 12 Però ch' egli s' avvedea bene, che gli mali gli sopravenivano, e l'oste sua l' avea abbandonato. | 12 for he knew that troubles had converged upon him, and his troops had deserted him. |
| 13 E Antioco s' accampò sopra Dora con CXX milia uomini da battaglia, e otto milia cavalieri. | 13 So Antiochus encamped against Dor, and with him were a hundred and twenty thousand warriors and eight thousand cavalry. |
| 14 E attorniò la cittade, e le navi vennono per mare; sì che per mare e per terra tribolavano la cittade, e non ne lasciavano uscire persona nè entrare. | 14 He surrounded the city, and the ships joined battle from the sea; he pressed the city hard from land and sea, and permitted no one to leave or enter it. |
| 15 In quel tempo venne da Roma Numenio, e quelli ch' erano andati con lui, i quali recarono lettere alli re e alle genti delle contrade, scritte in questa forma: | 15 Then Numenius and his companions arrived from Rome, with letters to the kings and countries, in which the following was written: |
| 16 Lucio, console de' Romani, al re Tolomeo salute. | 16 "Lucius, consul of the Romans, to King Ptolemy, greeting. |
| 17 Gli ambasciatori de' Giudei vennono a noi, come nostri amici, rinnovellando la prima amistade e compagnia, mandati da Simone principe [de' sacerdoti, e] dal popolo de' Giudei. | 17 The envoys of the Jews have come to us as our friends and allies to renew our ancient friendship and alliance. They had been sent by Simon the high priest and by the people of the Jews, |
| 18 E recarono a noi uno scudo d' oro di libbre mille. | 18 and have brought a gold shield weighing a thousand minas. |
| 19 Onde piacque a noi di scrivere alli re e alle regioni, che non facciano loro alcuno male, e non gl' ingiuriino e non gli offendano, nè loro, nè le loro cittadi, nè le loro regioni, e che non dieno aiuto a chi combattesse contro a loro. | 19 We therefore have decided to write to the kings and countries that they should not seek their harm or make war against them and their cities and their country, or make alliance with those who war against them. |
| 20 E parve a noi di ricevere da loro il detto scudo. | 20 And it has seemed good to us to accept the shield from them. |
| 21 E però se alcuni uomini rei fuggiti sono a voi del loro paese, (prendetegli e) dategli a Simone principe de' sacerdoti, che gli castighi secondo la sua legge. | 21 Therefore if any pestilent men have fled to you from their country, hand them over to Simon the high priest, that he may punish them according to their law." |
| 22 E queste medesime cose furono scritte allo re Demetrio, e ad Attalo e ad Ariatate e ad Arsace, | 22 The consul * wrote the same thing to Demetrius the king and to Attalus and Ariarathes and Arsaces, |
| 23 e per tutte le regioni; e a Lampsaco, e agli Spartiati, a Delo e a Mindo e a Sicione e a Caria, e ad Alicarnasso e a Samo, e a Pamfilia e a Licia, e a Rodo e a Faselide, e a Coo e a Siden e ad Arado, e a Gortina e a Gnido e a Cipro e a Cirene. | 23 and to all the countries, and to Sampsames, * and to the Spartans, and to Delos, and to Myndos, and to Sicyon, and to Caria, and to Samos, and to Pamphylia, and to Lycia, and to Halicarnassus, and to Rhodes, and to Phaselis, and to Cos, and to Side, and to Aradus and Gortyna and Cnidus and Cyprus and Cyrene. |
| 24 E lo esemplo di queste lettere scrissono a Simone principe de' sacerdoti, e al popolo de' Giudei. | 24 They also sent a copy of these things to Simon the high priest. |
| 25 E (sì come avete inteso) lo re Antioco s' accampò a Dora la seconda volta (prosperevolmente), sempre andando contro a loro, e facendo ingegni; e (avvenne che) rinchiuse Trifone, e non lo lasciò andare più inanzi. | 25 Antiochus the king besieged Dor anew, * continually throwing his forces against it and making engines of war; and he shut Trypho up and kept him from going out or in. |
| 26 E Simone gli mandò due milia uomini eletti in suo aiuto, e ariento e oro e vasi preziosi. | 26 And Simon sent to Antiochus * two thousand picked men, to fight for him, and silver and gold and much military equipment. |
| 27 E lo re Antioco tutte queste cose non volse ricevere, ma ruppe tutti li patti che prima aveva fatti con lui, [e] straniossi da lui. | 27 But he refused to receive them, and he broke all the agreements he formerly had made with Simon, *and became estranged from him. |
| 28 E mandògli Atenobio, uno degli suoi amici, che trattasse con lui, dicendo: voi tenete Ioppen e Gazara e la ròcca ch' è in Ierusalem, le quali sono cittadi del mio reame. | 28 He sent to him Athenobius, one of his friends, to confer with him, saying, "You hold control of Joppa and Gazara and the citadel in Jerusalem; they are cities of my kingdom. |
| 29 E avete distrutto i loro confini, e avete fatto grande male sopra la terra, e avete signoreggiato per molti luoghi nel mio regno. | 29 You have devastated their territory, you have done great damage in the land, and you have taken possession of many places in my kingdom. |
| 30 Ora adunque rendetemi le cittadi le quali avete occupate, e rendetemi i tributi de' luoghi nei quali voi avete signoreggiato fuori de' confini dei Giudei. | 30 Now then, hand over the cities which you have seized and the tribute money of the places which you have conquered outside the borders of Judea; |
| 31 E se ciò vi paresse grave, datemi in quello scambio cinquecento talenti di argento; per lo danno che avete fatto, e per lo tributo delle cittadi, altri cinquecento; e se questo non volete fare, sì vi verremo a combattere. | 31 or else give me for them five hundred talents of silver, and for the destruction that you have caused and the tribute money of the cities, five hundred talents more. Otherwise we will come and conquer you." |
| 32 Ora essendo venuto Atenobio, amico del re, (dispuose l'ambasciata, ed essendo) in Ierusalem, vidde la gloria di Simone, e la ricchezza dello ariento e dello oro che avea, e lo copioso fornimento (che avea); maravigliossi molto, e' dissegli le parole che gli avea imposto il re. | 32 So Athenobius the friend of the king came to Jerusalem, and when he saw the splendor of Simon, and the sideboard with its gold and silver plate, and his great magnificence, he was amazed. He reported to him the words of the king, |
| 33 E Simone rispuose: noi non abbiamo preso l'altrui terra, e non la tegniamo; ma possediamo la ereditade de' nostri padri, la quale è stata posseduta per alcuno tempo da' nostri nimici ingiustamente. | 33 but Simon gave him this reply: "We have neither taken foreign land nor seized foreign property, but only the inheritance of our fathers, which at one time had been unjustly taken by our enemies. |
| 34 Ma noi, abbiendo tempo, ci racquistiamo la ereditade de' nostri padri. | 34 Now that we have the opportunity, we are firmly holding the inheritance of our fathers. |
| 35 Ma di Ioppen e di Gazara, le quali tu addimandi, loro facevano nel popolo nostro grande danno e nel nostro paese; e per (grazia e per amore di) queste terre ti daremo C talenti (d' oro). Ma lo ambasciadore non rispuose a lui parola. | 35 As for Joppa and Gazara, which you demand, they were causing great damage among the people and to our land; for them we will give you a hundred talents." Athenobius * did not answer him a word, |
| 36 Ma con ira si ritornò al re, e ridissegli tutte queste parole, ridicendogli ancora della grande gloria di Simone, e tutto ciò che veduto avea; onde lo re di questo s' adirò molto forte. | 36 but returned in wrath to the king and reported to him these words and the splendor of Simon and all that he had seen. And the king was greatly angered. |
| 37 Ora avvenne che Trifone si fuggì in una nave in Ortosiada. | 37 Now Trypho embarked on a ship and escaped to Orthosia. |
| 38 Allora lo re ordinòe (uno che avea nome) Cendebeo duca della marina, e diedegli molta gente a piè e a cavallo. | 38 Then the king made Cendebeus commander-in-chief of the coastal country, and gave him troops of infantry and cavalry. |
| 39 E comandògli che movesse il campo contro alla faccia di Giudea; e comandògli che rifacesse Gedore, e ch' edificasse le porte della città, e che consumasse il popolo (de' Giudei). E lo re perseguitava Trifone. | 39 He commanded him to encamp against Judea, and commanded him to build up Kedron and fortify its gates, and to make war on the people; but the king pursued Trypho. |
| 40 Allora Cendebeo si venne (in Giudea) a Iamnia, e cominciò a commovere il popolo, e a guastare Giudea, e imprigionare il popolo e ucciderlo, ed edificare Gedore. | 40 So Cendebeus came to Jamnia and began to provoke the people and invade Judea and take the people captive and kill them. |
| 41 E puose quivi l'oste e i cavalieri, ????? ch' egli scorresse per la via di Giudea, sì come il re gli avea comandato. | 41 He built up Kedron and stationed there horsemen and troops, so that they might go out and make raids along the highways of Judea, as the king had ordered him. |
