1 Як же Рахиль побачила, що не народжує Яковові дітей, стала заздрити своїй сестрі і сказала до Якова: Дай мені діток, а то вмру.	1 Rachel, seeing that she herself gave Jacob no children, became jealous of her sister. And she said toJacob, 'Give me children, or I shal die!'
2 Спалахнув Яків гнівом проти Рахилі й каже: Хіба ж то я можу бути замість Бога, який відмовив тобі плідности лона?	2 This made Jacob angry with Rachel, and he retorted, 'Am I in the position of God, who has denied youmotherhood?'
3 Тоді вона й каже: Ось моя слугиня Білга; увійди до неї, нехай уродить мені у прийми, щоб і мені розвинутись через неї.	3 So she said, 'Here is my slave-girl, Bilhah. Sleep with her and let her give birth on my knees; throughher, then, I too shal have children!'
4 Тож дала йому Білгу, свою слугиню, за жінку, і Яків зійшовся з нею.	4 So she gave him her slave-girl Bilhah as concubine. Jacob slept with her,
5 Зачала Білга і вродила Яковові сина.	5 and Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a son by Jacob.
6 Тоді Рахиль і каже: Бог судив мені й почув також мій голос та й дав мені сина. Тому й дала йому ім’я Дан.	6 Then Rachel said, 'God has done me justice; yes, he has heard my prayer and given me a son.'Accordingly she named him Dan.
7 Знову зачала Білга, слугиня Рахилі, і родила Якову другого сина.	7 Again Rachel's slave-girl Bilhah conceived and gave birth to a second son by Jacob.
8 А Рахиль сказала: Великим змаганням змагалась я з моєю сестрою і подолала. Тому й дала йому ім’я Нафталі.	8 Then Rachel said, 'I have fought a fateful battle with my sister, and I have won!' So she named himNaphtali.
9 Але й Лія, побачивши, що перестала родити, взяла Зілпу, свою служницю, і дала її Яковові за жінку.	9 Now Leah, seeing that she had ceased to bear children, took her slave-girl Zilpah and gave her toJacob as concubine.
10 Та й родила Зілпа, служниця Лії, Яковові сина.	10 So Leah's slave-girl Zilpah gave birth to a son by Jacob.
11 І каже Лія: Прийшло щастя! Тому назвала його ім’ям Гад.	11 Then Leah exclaimed, 'What good fortune!' So she named him Gad.
12 Потім родила Зілпа, служниця Лії, Яковові другого сина.	12 Leah's slave-girl Zilpah gave birth to a second son by Jacob.
13 Та й каже Лія: Яка ж я щаслива! — бо жінки будуть мене щасливою вітати. І дала йому ім’я Ашер.	13 Then Leah said, 'What blessedness! Women will cal me blessed!' So she named him Asher.
14 Вийшов якось Рувим під час пшеничних жнив і знайшов на полі любовні яблука та й приніс їх Лії, своїй матері. Тоді каже Рахиль до Лії: дай мені, з ласки, любовних яблук твого сина.	14 One day, at the time of the wheat harvest, Reuben found some mandrakes in the field and broughtthem to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, 'Please give me some of your son's mandrakes.'
15 А ця до неї: Мало ще того, що забрала мого чоловіка? Хочеш узяти й любовні яблука мого сина? Рахиль каже: Тому нехай цієї ночі, спить він з тобою за любовні яблука твого сина.	15 Leah replied, 'Is it not enough to have taken my husband, without your taking my son's mandrakesas well?' So Rachel said, 'Very wel , he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son's mandrakes.'
16 Як прийшов Яків з поля ввечері, вийшла Лія йому назустріч і каже: Ти мусиш увійти до мене, бо я тебе найняла за любовні яблука мого сина. І спав з нею тієї ночі.	16 When Jacob came back from the fields that night, Leah went out to meet him and said, 'You mustcome to me, for I have hired you at the price of my son's mandrakes.' So he slept with her that night.
17 Вислухав Бог Лію, і вона зачала та й породила Яковові п’ятого сина.	17 God heard Leah, and she conceived and gave birth to a fifth son by Jacob.
18 І каже Лія: Бог дав мені плату за те, що я дала свою служницю чоловікові своєму. Тож і назвала його ім’ям Іссахар.	18 Then Leah said, 'God has given me my reward for giving my slave-girl to my husband.' So shenamed him Issachar.
19 Знову зачала Лія й родила Яковові шостого сина;	19 Again Leah conceived and gave birth to a sixth son by Jacob,
20 та й каже Лія: Бог дав мені гарний дарунок; тепер чоловік мій буде жити зо мною, бо я породила йому шістьох синів. І дала йому ім’я Завулон.	20 and said, 'God has given me a fine gift; now my husband wil bring me presents, for I have borne himsix sons.' So she named him Zebulun.
21 Потім же вона породила дочку й дала їй ім’я Діна.	21 Later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
22 Але згадав Бог і про Рахиль та й вислухав її і відімкнув Бог їй лоно.	22 Then God remembered Rachel; he heard her and opened her womb.
23 Вона зачала й породила сина, й каже: Бог увільнив мене від безчестя!	23 She conceived and gave birth to a son, and said, 'God has taken away my disgrace!'
24 Тож назвала його ім’ям Йосиф, кажучи: Дай мені, Господи, ще й другого сина.	24 She named him Joseph, saying, 'May Yahweh add another son for me!'
25 Сталось, як уродила Рахиль Йосифа, то Яків сказав до Лавана: Відпусти мене, нехай іду на рідне місце, на свою батьківщину.	25 When Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, 'Release me and let me go home tomy own country.
26 Дай мені моїх жінок з дітьми, що за них я служив тобі, щоб я міг піти собі; бож знаєш мою службу, яку я відбув для тебе.	26 Give me my wives for whom I have worked for you, and my children, and let me go. You are welaware how long I have worked for you.'
27 А Лаван каже йому: Дозволь мені сказати тобі таке: по деяких знаках я зауважував, що Господь благословив мене через тебе.	27 Laban replied, 'If I have done what pleases you . . . I have learnt by divination that Yahweh hasblessed me because of you.
28 І додав: Скажи мені, скільки тобі платити, і я дам.	28 So name your wages,' he added, 'and I wil pay.'
29 Тоді Яків сказав до нього: Ти сам знаєш, як я служив тобі й якою зробилася твоя скотина в мене.	29 He replied, 'You know how hard I have worked for you, and how your stock has fared in my charge.
30 Того трошки, що було в тебе передо мною, вельми розрослось, і Господь благословив тебе з моїм приходом. Тепер час би мені попрацювати й для власного дому.	30 The little you had before I came has increased enormously, and Yahweh has blessed you wherever Ihave been. When am I to provide for my own household too?'
31 Лаван спитав: Що ж маю тобі дати? На те Яків відповів: Нічого не маєш мені дати! Коли зробиш мені те, що тобі кажу, я піду знову пасти й доглядати твоїх овець.	31 Laban said, 'How much am I to pay you?' Jacob replied, 'You need not pay me anything. I shallchange my mind and go on tending your flock, if you do this one thing for me.
32 Сьогодні я пройду крізь усю твою отару, вилучу з неї кожну чорну овечку між вівцями й усе красе та клапчасте між козами; то й буде моя плата.	32 'Go through your entire flock today and remove every black animal among the sheep, and everyspeckled or spotted one among the goats. These wil be my wages,
33 Моя чесність невдовзі посвідчить за мене, коли ти прийдеш перевіряти мій заробіток: усе, що не є красе та клапчасте між козами і не є чорне між вівцями, воно вкрадене, якщо знайдеться в мене.	33 and my uprightness wil answer for me later: when you come to check my wages, every goat I havethat is not speckled or spotted, and every sheep that is not black will count as stolen by me.'
34 На те Лаван каже: Добре, нехай буде по твоєму слову.	34 Laban replied, 'Good, just as you say.'
35 І того ж самого дня він вилучив козлів смугнастих і клапчастих, усіх кіз красих і клапчастих, усе, що на ньому щось біле, і все чорне між вівцями — та й дав у руки своїх синів;	35 That same day he removed the striped and speckled he-goats and all the spotted and speckled she-goats, every one that had white on it, and al the black sheep, and entrusted these to his sons.
36 ще й віддалився на три дні ходу між собою та Яковом. Яків же пас решту овець Лавана.	36 Then he put a three days' journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob grazed the rest ofLaban's flock.
37 Тоді взяв собі Яків прутів свіжих, тополевих, миґдалевих і чинарових та й покарбував на них білі карби, облуплюючи аж до білого на прутах.	37 Jacob then got fresh shoots from poplar, almond and plane trees, and peeled them in white strips,laying bare the white part of the shoots.
38 Поклав він ті прути, що їх пооблуплював, перед вівцями в корита й у пійла з водою, до яких приходили вівці пити; і як вони приходили пити, то парувались.	38 He set up the shoots he had peeled in front of the animals, in the troughs, in the water-holes wherethe animals came to drink. Since they mated when they came to drink,
39 А парувавшися перед прутами, вони по тому котилися (ягнятами) строкатими, клапчастими і красими.	39 the goats thus mated in front of the shoots and so the goats produced striped, spotted and speckledyoung.
40 Ягнят Яків відділив, ще й поставив овець лицем до себе — строкатих і всіх чорних у Лавановій отарі; і так він уклав отари окремо для себе, та й не укладав їх з вівцями Лавана.	40 The ewes, on the other hand, Jacob kept apart and made these face whatever was striped or blackin Laban's flock. Thus he built up droves of his own which he did not put with Laban's flocks.
41 А до того ж, усюди, де парувалися сильніші вівці, там Яків клав прути в корита перед очі овець, щоб вони парувалися коло тих прутів.	41 Furthermore, whenever the sturdier animals were mating, Jacob put the shoots where the animalscould see them, in the troughs, so that they would mate in front of the shoots.
42 А коли вівці були слабовиті, він їх не клав; отож слабовиті були для Лавана, а щосильніші для Якова.	42 But when the animals were feeble, he did not put them there; so Laban got the feeble, and Jacob thesturdy.
43 І збагатився чоловік вельми-превельми, й була в нього сила овець і слугині й слуги, верблюди й осли.	43 Thus the man grew extremely rich, and came to own large flocks, men and women slaves, camelsand donkeys.
