| 5 Se a riqueza é um bem desejável na vida, que há de mais rico que a Sabedoria que tudo criou? | 5 If riches are a desirable possession in life, what is richer than wisdom who effects all things? |
| 6 Se a inteligência do homem consegue operar, o que, então, mais que a Sabedoria, é artífice dos seres? | 6 And if understanding is effective, who more than she is fashioner of what exists? |
| 7 E se alguém ama a justiça, seus trabalhos são virtudes; ela ensina a temperança e a prudência, a justiça e a força: não há ninguém que seja mais útil aos homens na vida. | 7 And if any one loves righteousness, her labors are virtues; for she teaches self-control and prudence, justice and courage; nothing in life is more profitable for men than these. |
| 8 Se alguém deseja uma vasta ciência, ela sabe o passado e conjectura o futuro; conhece as sutilezas oratórias e revolve os enigmas; prevê os sinais e os prodígios, e o que tem que acontecer no decurso das idades e dos tempos. | 8 And if any one longs for wide experience, she knows the things of old, and infers the things to come; she understands turns of speech and the solutions of riddles; she has foreknowledge of signs and wonders and of the outcome of seasons and times. |
| 9 Portanto, resolvi tomá-la por companheira de minha vida, cuidando que ela será para mim uma boa conselheira, e minha consolação nos cuidados e na tristeza. | 9 Therefore I determined to take her to live with me, knowing that she would give me good counsel and encouragement in cares and grief. |
| 10 Graças a ela, receberei as honras das multidões, e, embora jovem como sou, o respeito dos anciãos. | 10 Because of her I shall have glory among the multitudes and honor in the presence of the elders, though I am young. |
| 11 Reconhecerão a penetração de meu julgamento, e excitarei a admiração dos reis. | 11 I shall be found keen in judgment, and in the sight of rulers I shall be admired. |
| 12 Se me calo, esperarão que eu fale; se falo, estarão atentos; e se prolongo meu discurso, levarão a mão à boca. | 12 When I am silent they will wait for me, and when I speak they will give heed; and when I speak at greater length they will put their hands on their mouths. |
| 13 Por meio dela obterei a imortalidade, e deixarei à posteridade uma lembrança eterna. | 13 Because of her I shall have immortality, and leave an everlasting remembrance to those who come after me. |
| 14 Governarei povos e as nações ser-me-ão submissas. | 14 I shall govern peoples, and nations will be subject to me; |
| 15 Príncipes temíveis estarão cheios de medo ao ouvirem falar de mim; mostrar-me-ei bom para com o povo e valoroso no combate. | 15 dread monarchs will be afraid of me when they hear of me; among the people I shall show myself capable, and courageous in war. |
| 16 Recolhido em minha casa, repousarei junto dela, porque a sua convivência não tem nada de desagradável, e sua intimidade nada de fastidioso; ela traz consigo, pelo contrário, o contentamento e a alegria! | 16 When I enter my house, I shall find rest with her, for companionship with her has no bitterness, and life with her has no pain, but gladness and joy. |
| 17 Meditando comigo mesmo nesses pensamentos, e considerando em meu coração que a imortalidade se encontra na aliança com a Sabedoria, | 17 When I considered these things inwardly, and thought upon them in my mind, that in kinship with wisdom there is immortality, |
| 18 a alegria perfeita na sua amizade, contínua riqueza na sua atividade, inteligência nas lições de seus entretenimentos familiares, e glória na comunicação de suas sentenças, saí à sua procura a fim de possuí-la em mim. | 18 and in friendship with her, pure delight, and in the labors of her hands, unfailing wealth, and in the experience of her company, understanding, and renown in sharing her words, I went about seeking how to get her for myself. |
