Now, when Moses had completed the erection of the Dwelling and had anointed and consecrated it with all its equipment (as well as the altar with all its equipment),1 Factum est autem in die, qua complevit Moyses habitaculum et erexit illud unxitque et sanctificavit cum omnibus vasis suis, altare similiter et omnia vasa eius,
an offering was made by the princes of Israel, who were heads of ancestral houses; the same princes of the tribes who supervised the census.2 obtulerunt principes Israel et capita familiarum, qui erant per singulas tribus praefecti eorum, qui numerati fuerant,
The offering they brought before the LORD consisted of six baggage wagons and twelve oxen, that is, a wagon for every two princes, and an ox for every prince. These they presented as their offering before the Dwelling.3 munera coram Domino sex plaustra tecta cum duodecim bobus. Unum plaustrum obtulere duo duces et unum bovem singuli; obtuleruntque ea in conspectu habitaculi.
The LORD then said to Moses,4 Ait autem Dominus ad Moysen:
"Accept their offering, that these things may be put to use in the service of the meeting tent. Assign them to the Levites, to each group in proportion to its duties."5 “ Suscipe ab eis, ut serviant in ministerio tabernaculi conventus, et trades ea Levitis iuxta ordinem ministerii sui ”.
So Moses accepted the wagons and oxen, and assigned them to the Levites.6 Itaque cum suscepisset Moyses plaustra et boves, tradidit eos Levitis.
He gave two wagons and four oxen to the Gershonites in proportion to their duties,7 Duo plaustra et quattuor boves dedit filiis Gerson, iuxta id quod habebant necessarium.
and four wagons and eight oxen to the Merarites in proportion to their duties, under the supervision of Ithamar, son of Aaron the priest.8 Quattuor alia plaustra et octo boves dedit filiis Merari, secundum offficia sua sub manu Ithamar filii Aaron sacerdotis.
He gave none to the Kohathites, because they had to carry on their shoulders the sacred objects which were their charge.9 Filiis autem Caath non dedit plaustra et boves, quia in sanctuario serviunt et onera propriis portant umeris.
For the dedication of the altar also, the princes brought offerings before the altar on the day it was anointed.10 Igitur obtulerunt duces in dedicationem altaris die, qua unctum est, oblationem suam ante altare.
