| 1 Rispose Giobbe, e disse: | 1 Then Job answered: |
| 2 Ponete mente, vi prego, alle mie parole, e cangiate di opinione. | 2 "Listen carefully to my words, and let this be your consolation. |
| 3 Soffrite che parli anch' io, e di poi burlatevi, se cosi vi parrà, delle mie parole. | 3 Bear with me, and I will speak, and after I have spoken, mock on. |
| 4 Forse io disputo con un uomo, onde io non abbia ragion di attristarmi? | 4 As for me, is my complaint against man? Why should I not be impatient? |
| 5 Miratemi attentamente, e rimarrete stupefatti, e vi metterete il dita alla bocca: | 5 Look at me, and be appalled, and lay your hand upon your mouth. |
| 6 Io stesso quando vi ripenso mi atterrisco, e la mia carne è scossa dal tremito. | 6 When I think of it I am dismayed, and shuddering seizes my flesh. |
| 7 Perché adunque vivono gli empj, e sono innalzati, e son possenti per le loro ricchezze? | 7 Why do the wicked live, reach old age, and grow mighty in power? |
| 8 Veggonsi stare attorno la loro progenie, hanno dinanzi una turba di parenti, e di nipoti. | 8 Their children are established in their presence, and their offspring before their eyes. |
| 9 Le loro case sono tranquille, e in pace, e non si fa ad essi sentire la verga di Dio. | 9 Their houses are safe from fear, and no rod of God is upon them. |
| 10 Le loro vacche non sono sterili, e non abortiscono; concepiscono, e non disperdono i loro parti. | 10 Their bull breeds without fail; their cow calves, and does not cast her calf. |
| 11 Escon fuori in truppa come pecore i loro teneri figli, e saltano, e scherzano. | 11 They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance. |
| 12 Portano timpani, e cetre, e danzano al suono degli strumenti. | 12 They sing to the tambourine and the lyre, and rejoice to the sound of the pipe. |
| 13 Passano felici i loro giorni, e in un istante scendono nel sepolcro. | 13 They spend their days in prosperity, and in peace they go down to Sheol. |
| 14 Eglino che dissero a Dio: Va lungi da noi, non vogliam saper nulla de' tuoi documenti. | 14 They say to God, 'Depart from us! We do not desire the knowledge of thy ways. |
| 15 Chi è quest'Onnipotente, che noi dobbiamo servirlo, e che gioverebbe a noi il pregarlo? | 15 What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit do we get if we pray to him?' |
| 16 Ma poiché in loro potestà non sono i beni loro, sia perciò lungi da me il sistema degli empj. | 16 Behold, is not their prosperity in their hand? The counsel of the wicked is far from me. |
| 17 Quante volte poi si spegne la lucerna degli empj, e vien sopra di essi la piena, e (Dio) nell'ira sua da ad essi la loro porzione di dolori? | 17 "How often is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out? That their calamity comes upon them? That God distributes pains in his anger? |
| 18 Saran come paglia al soffiar del vento, e come loppa dispersa da turbine. | 18 That they are like straw before the wind, and like chaff that the storm carries away? |
| 19 Serberà Dio a' figliuoli la pena del padre: e quando Dio renderà mercede, allora quegli imparerà. | 19 You say, 'God stores up their iniquity for their sons.' Let him recompense it to themselves, that they may know it. |
| 20 Vedrà egli co' proprj occhi il suo sterminio, e berà il furore dell'Onnipotente. | 20 Let their own eyes see their destruction, and let them drink of the wrath of the Almighty. |
| 21 Perocché che importa a lui quel che sarà della sua casa, quando il numero de' suoi mesi sia troncato nel mezzo? | 21 For what do they care for their houses after them, when the number of their months is cut off? |
| 22 Vi sarà forse chi insegni a Dio, a lui che giudica i grandi? | 22 Will any teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those that are on high? |
| 23 Quegli muore robusto, e sano, e ricco, e felice; | 23 One dies in full prosperity, being wholly at ease and secure, |
| 24 Le sue viscere sono coperte di grasso, e le sue ossa di midollo: | 24 his body full of fat and the marrow of his bones moist. |
| 25 Un altro poi muore tralle afflizioni di spirito, e privo di ogni bene. | 25 Another dies in bitterness of soul, never having tasted of good. |
| 26 E con tutto ciò si giaceranno insieme nella polvere, e saran ricoperti dai vermi. | 26 They lie down alike in the dust, and the worms cover them. |
| 27 Certo io comprendo i vostri pensieri, e gli ingiusti giudizj vostri contro di me. | 27 "Behold, I know your thoughts, and your schemes to wrong me. |
| 28 Perocché voi dite: La casa di quel principe dov'è? E dove sono i padiglioni degli empj? | 28 For you say, 'Where is the house of the prince? Where is the tent in which the wicked dwelt?' |
| 29 Interrogate chicchessia de' viaggiatori, e sentirete, che in questa guisa egli pensa. | 29 Have you not asked those who travel the roads, and do you not accept their testimony |
| 30 Perocché pel giorno della vendetta è riserbato l'iniquo, e sarà condotto al dì del furore. | 30 that the wicked man is spared in the day of calamity, that he is rescued in the day of wrath? |
| 31 Chi biasimerà in faccia a lui i suoi andamenti? E chi a lui renderà quel ch'egli ha fatto? | 31 Who declares his way to his face, and who requites him for what he has done? |
| 32 Egli sarà condotto al sepolcro, e starà immobile tralla turba de' morti. | 32 When he is borne to the grave, watch is kept over his tomb. |
| 33 La ghiaia del Cocito godè di averlo, ed ei tirerà dietro a se tutta la gente, e innanzi a se avrà una turba infinita. | 33 The clods of the valley are sweet to him; all men follow after him, and those who go before him are innumerable. |
| 34 Quanto vana è adunque la consolazione che voi mi recate, mentre è dimostrato, che quel che voi dite repugna al vero? | 34 How then will you comfort me with empty nothings? There is nothing left of your answers but falsehood." |
