EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Una mosca muerta corrompe y hace fermentar el óleo del perfumista. Pesa más un poco de insensatez que la sabiduría y la gloria.	1 Dying flies spoil the sweetness of the ointment. Wisdom and glory is more precious than a small and shortlived folly.
2 El sabio piensa rectamente, y el necio lo hace torcidamente.	2 The heart of a wise man is in his right hand, and the heart of a fool is in his left hand.
3 Por cualquier camino que vaya, al necio le falta el buen sentido, y hace que se diga de él: «Es un necio».	3 Yea, and the fool when he walketh in the way, whereas be himself is a fool, esteemeth all men fools.
4 Si el que gobierna se irrita contra ti, no te salgas de quicio, porque la sangre fría evita grandes fallas.	4 If the spirit of him that hath power, ascend upon thee, leave not thy place: because care will make the greatest sins to cease.
5 Hay un mal que yo he visto bajo el sol, como error que procede de la autoridad:	5 There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, as it were by an error proceeding from the face of the prince:
6 el necio es promovido a los puestos más altos y los nobles rebajados a los puestos inferiores.	6 A fool set in high dignity, and the rich sitting beneath.
7 Yo vi esclavos montados a caballo y príncipes de a pie, como los esclavos.	7 I have seen servants upon horses: and princes walking on the ground as servants.
8 El que cava una fosa cae en ella y al que derriba un cerco, lo muerde una serpiente.	8 He that diggeth a pit, shall fall into it: and he that breaketh a hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
9 El que saca piedras se lastima con ellas y el que corta leña está expuesto al peligro.	9 He that removeth stones, shall be hurt by them: and he that cutteth trees, shall be wounded by them.
10 Si el hierro está mellado, y no lo afilan, es preciso redoblar las fuerzas: por eso es provechoso emplear bien la sabiduría.	10 If the iron be blunt, and be not as before, but be made blunt, with much labour it shall be sharpened: and after industry shall follow wisdom.
11 Si la serpiente muerde porque falla el encantamiento, ¿qué provecho saca el encantador?	11 If a serpent bite in silence, he is nothing better that backbiteth secretly.
12 Las palabras del sabio son recibidas con agrado, pero al necio lo pierde su propia lengua:	12 The words of the mouth of a wise man are grace: but the lips of a fool shall throw him down headlong.
13 cuando empieza a hablar, dice insensateces, y cuando termina, las peores locuras;	13 The beginning of his words is folly, and the end of his talk is a mischievous error.
14 el insensato multiplica las palabras. El hombre no sabe lo que va a suceder: ¿quién puede anunciarle lo que vendrá después de él?	14 A fool multiplieth words. A man cannot tell what hath been before him: and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
15 El esfuerzo fatiga al necio, porque no se da maña ni para ir a la ciudad.	15 The labour of fools shall afflict them that know not bow to go to the city.
16 ¡Ay de ti, nación, si tu rey es un joven y tus príncipes comen desde la mañana!	16 Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and when the princes eat in the morning.
17 ¡Feliz de ti, nación, si tienes por rey a un noble de nacimiento, y tus príncipes comen cuando es debido, para reparar sus fuerzas y no para embriagarse!	17 Blessed is the land, whose king is noble, and whose princes eat in due season for refreshment, and not for riotousness.
18 Por la pereza se desploman las vigas y por la dejadez se viene abajo la casa.	18 By slothfulness a building shall be brought down, and through the weakness of hands, the house shall drop through.
19 ¡Para divertirse se celebra un banquete, el vino alegra la vida y el dinero responde por todo!	19 For laughter they make bread, and wine that the living may feast: and all things obey money.
20 Ni siquiera en privado maldigas al rey, y ni en tu habitación maldigas a un rico, porque un pájaro puede hacer correr la voz y la indiscreción tiene alas.	20 Detract not the king, no not in thy thought; and speak not evil of the rich man in thy private chamber: because even the birds of the air will carry thy voice, and he that hath wings will tell what thou hast said.
