| 1 Bem-aventurado o homem que não cometeu faltas com palavras da sua boca, e que não foi torturado pelos remorsos do pecado. Ditoso aquele que não teve tristeza na sua alma, e que não descaiu da sua esperança. | 1 Blessed is the man who has not slipped because of a word from his mouth, and who has not been stung by grief because of an offense. |
| 2 Happy is he who does not have sadness in his mind, and who has not fallen away from his hope. |
| 3 A riqueza é inútil ao homem cobiçoso e avaro; e de que serve o ouro ao homem invejoso? | 3 Substance is senseless for a greedy and stingy man. And what would a spiteful man do with gold? |
| 4 O que amontoa riquezas, defraudando-se do necessário com injustiça, ajunta-as para outros, e outrem se regalará com os seus bens. Para quem será bom aquele que é mau para si? Nem ele goza dos seus bens. | 4 Whoever acquires unjustly, according to his own mind, gathers for others. For another will spend his goods lavishly. |
| 5 Whoever is wicked to himself, to whom will he be good? For he will not take enjoyment in his own goods. |
| 6 Nada há pior do que aquele que é avaro para si mesmo: nisto está o salário da sua malícia. Se faz bem, é só por inadvertência e sem querer; e por último descobre a sua malícia. | 6 Whoever has ill will toward himself, nothing is more worthless than he is. But such is the reward of his wickedness. |
| 7 And if he does good, he does it ignorantly and unwillingly. And in the very end, he realizes his own malice. |
| 8 O olho do invejoso é mau; ele volta o seu rosto e despreza a sua alma. | 8 The eye of the spiteful man is wicked, and he averts his face and despises his own soul. |
| 9 O olho do avaro não. se sacia com uma porção injusta; não se fartará, enquanto não tiver secado e consumido a sua vida. | 9 The eye of the greedy man is insatiable in his portion of iniquity. He will not be satisfied until he has consumed his own soul, withering it away. |
| 10 O olho mau tende para o mal, e não se satisfará de pão, mas estará faminto e melancólico à sua própria mesa. | 10 An evil eye is directed at evil things. And he will not be satisfied by bread; instead, he will be needy and grieving at his own table. |
| 11 Filho, se tens posses, faze com elas bem a ti mesmo, e oferece a Deus dignas oblações. | 11 Son, if you have anything, do good to yourself, and offer worthy oblations to God. |
| 12 Lembra-te que a morte não tarda, e que te foi intimado o ir para o sepulcro, porque é decreto deste mundo o ter infalivelmente de morrer. | 12 Remember that death has not been delayed, and that the covenant of the grave has been revealed to you. For the covenant of this world will pass away in death. |
| 13 Faze bem ao teu amigo antes da morte, e, estendendo a mão, dá esmola ao pobre, segundo as tuas posses. | 13 Do good to your friend before you die. And according to your ability, extend your hand and give to the poor. |
| 14 Não te prives dum bom dia, e não deixes perder nenhuma parcela do bem que te é concedido. | 14 Do not cheat yourself out of a good day, and do not let the smallest good gift pass you by. |
| 15 Não vês que hás-de deixar a outros o fruto das tuas penas e dos teus trabalhos, para eles o repartirem, pela sorte, entre si ? | 15 Should you not leave it to others to divide your sorrows and labors by lot? |
| 16 Dá, e recebe, e justifica a tua alma. | 16 Give, and receive, and justify your soul. |
| 17 Pratica a justiça antes da tua morte. porque na sepultura não se vai procurar alimento. | 17 Before your passing, accomplish justice. For in death, there is no food to be found. |
| 18 Toda a carne envelhece como o feno, e como as folhas que crescem sobre as árvores verdes. | 18 All flesh grows old like the grass, and like the foliage that springs forth from a green tree. |
| 19 Umas folhas nascem, e outras caem: assim nas gerações de carne e de sangue; umas morrem e outras nascem. | 19 Some spring up, and others fall away. Such is the generation of flesh and blood. One is finished, and another is born. |
| 20 Toda a obra corruptível virá enfim a perecer, e aquele que a fez irá com ela. | 20 Every corruptible work will fail in the end. And its worker will go with it. |
| 21 Toda a obra excelente será bem apreciada, e o que a executa, nela será honrado. | 21 But every excellent work will be justified. And whoever worked it will be honored by it. |
| 22 Bem-aventurado o homem que permanece constante na sabedoria. que medita na sua justiça, e que pensa, em seu coração, no olhar de Deus que vê tudo; | 22 Blessed is the man who will abide in wisdom, and who will meditate on her righteousness, and who, in his mind, will consider the circumspection of God. |
| 23 que repassa no seu coração os caminhos da sabedoria, e que penetra na inteligência dos seus segredos, indo atrás dela como quem lhe segue o rasto, e se detém sobre os seus caminhos: | 23 He considers her ways in his heart, and he finds understanding in her secrets. He goes after her like an investigator, and he is constant in her ways. |
| 24 que olha pelas suas janelas, que escuta à sua porta; | 24 He gazes through her windows, and he listens at her door. |
| 25 que repousa junto da sua casa, e que, pregando uma estaca nas suas paredes, assenta ao lado dela a sua pequena cabana, dentro da qual terão perpétua morada (todos) os bens. | 25 He rests next to her house, and, fastening a peg in her walls, he sets up his cottage by her hands. And so, good things will find rest in his cottage as time passes. |
| 26 Ele porá seus filhos debaixo da sua cobertura, e ele mesmo morará debaixo dos seus ramos. | 26 He will station his sons under her covering, and he will abide under her branches. |
| 27 À sua sombra será defendido do calor, e repousará na sua glória. | 27 He will be protected by her covering from the heat, and he will rest in her glory. |
