| 1 Ouve, pois, Job, as minhas palavras, escuta todos os meus discursos. | 1 Therefore, O Job, hear my discourse, and hearken to all my words. |
| 2 Eis que abri a minha boca, fale a minha língua sob o meu palato. | 2 Behold, now I open my mouth; my tongue and my voice form words. |
| 3 O meu coração dará palavras sapientes, os meus lábios proferirão palavras claras. | 3 I will state directly what is in my mind, my lips shall utter knowledge sincerely; |
| 4 O espirito de Deus me fez, e o sopro do Omnipotente me deu a vida. | 4 For the spirit of God has made me, the breath of the Almighty keeps me alive. |
| 5 Se podes, responde-me, ergue-te e aguenta-te contra mim. | 5 If you are able, refute me; draw up your arguments and stand forth. |
| 6 Deus me fez a mim, como a ti, do mesmo barro também eu fui formado. | 6 Behold I, like yourself, have been taken from the same clay by God. |
| 7 Pelo que nada há de maravilhoso em mim que te espante, e o meu peso não te esmagará. | 7 Therefore no fear of me should dismay you, nor should my presence weigh heavily upon you. |
| 8 Ora disseste aos meus ouvidos, e ouvi o som destas tuas palavras: | 8 But you have said in my hearing, as I listened to the sound of your words: |
| 9 "Eu estou limpo e sem pecado; estou sem mácula, em mim não há iniquidade. | 9 "I am clean and without transgression; I am innocent; there is no guilt in me. |
| 10 Deus achou queixas contra mim, por isso me considerou como seu inimigo. | 10 Yet he invents pretexts against me and reckons me as his enemy. |
| 11 Pôs os meus pés no cepo, observou todas as minhas veredas." | 11 He puts my feet in the stocks; he watches all my ways!" |
| 12 Nisto pois (ó Job) mostraste que não és justo, porque Deus é maior do que o homem. | 12 In this you are not just, let me tell you; for God is greater than man. |
| 13 Por que te queixas dele, pelo facto de não dar razão de tudo o que faz? | 13 Why, then, do you make complaint against him that he gives no account of his doings? |
| 14 Deus fala de um modo, fala de outro, mas o homem não o entende. | 14 For God does speak, perhaps once, or even twice, though one perceive it not. |
| 15 Em sonho, em visão noturna, quando o sono cai sobre os homens, quando estão dormindo no seu leito, | 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, (when deep sleep falls upon men) as they slumber in their beds, |
| 16 então (Deus) abre os ouvidos dos homens, e, com as suas censuras os aterra, | 16 It is then he opens the ears of men and as a warning to them, terrifies them; |
| 17 para os apartar do mal, para os livrar da soberba, | 17 By turning man from evil and keeping pride away from him, |
| 18 para salvar a sua alma da corrupção, e a sua vida de um fim desastrado. | 18 He withholds his soul from the pit and his life from passing to the grave. |
| 19 (Deus) corrige também o homem, por meio das dores no seu leito, quando faz que todos os seus ossos se mirrem, | 19 Or a man is chastened on his bed by pain and unceasing suffering within his frame, |
| 20 Neste estado se lhe torna aborrecido o pão, e o manjar que noutro tempo a sua alma apetecia. | 20 So that to his appetite food becomes repulsive, and his senses reject the choicest nourishment. |
| 21 Vai-se consumindo a sua carne, e os ossos, que tinham estado cobertos, se descobrem. | 21 His flesh is wasted so that it cannot be seen, and his bones, once invisible, appear; |
| 22 A sua alma aproximou-se do sepulcro, a sua vida dos horrores da morte. | 22 His soul draws near to the pit, his life to the place of the dead. |
| 23 Se houver algum anjo, um entre milhares, que fale a seu favor, que instrua o homem no seu dever, | 23 If then there be for him an angel, one out of a thousand, a mediator, To show him what is right for him and bring the man back to justice, |
| 24 Se compadeça dele e diga: "Livra-o, para que não desça à corrupção; encontrei o resgate (da sua vida)", | 24 He will take pity on him and say, "Deliver him from going down to the pit; I have found him a ransom." |
| 25 - a sua carne reverdecerá mais que na juventude, voltará aos dias da adolescência. | 25 Then his flesh shall become soft as a boy's; he shall be again as in the days of his youth. |
| 26 Ele suplicará a Deus, e Deus se aplacará, mostrar-lhe-à com júbilo a sua face, e dará ao homem o seu direito. | 26 He shall pray and God will favor him; he shall see God's face with rejoicing. |
| 27 Ele se voltará para os (outros) homens e dirá; Pequei, violei a justiça, e não fui castigado como merecia. | 27 He shall sing before men and say, "I sinned and did wrong, yet he has not punished me accordingly. |
| 28 Deus livrou a minha alma de cair na morte, e a minha vida volta a ver a luz. | 28 He delivered my soul from passing to the pit, and I behold the light of life." |
| 29 Ora Deus faz todas estas coisas, duas ou três vezes, em cada homem, | 29 Lo, all these things God does, twice, or thrice, for a man, |
| 30 para retirar a sua alma da corrupção, e para a esclarecer com a luz dos viventes. | 30 Bringing back his soul from the pit to the light, in the land of the living. |
| 31 Atende, Job, e ouve-me; cala-te, enquanto eu falo. | 31 Be attentive, O Job; listen to me! Be silent and I will speak. |
| 32 Se contudo tens alguma coisa a dizer, responde-me, fala, porque eu quero dar-te razão. | 32 If you have aught to say, then answer me. Speak out! I should like to see you justified. |
| 33 Mas, se nada tens (que responder), ouve-me; cala-te, e eu te ensinarei a sabedoria. | 33 If not, then do you listen to me; be silent while I teach you wisdom. |
