| 1 Job, continuando a sua parábola, acrescentou: | 1 Job also added, taking up his parable, and said: |
| 2 Quem me dera ser como fui nos meses antigos, como nos dias em que Deus me guardava, | 2 Who will grant me, that I might be according to the months past, according to the days in which God kept me? |
| 3 quando a sua lâmpada luzia sobre a minha cabeça, e quando eu, guiado pela sua luz, caminhava (seguro) entre as trevas! | 3 When his lamp shined over my head, and I walked by his light in darkness? |
| 4 Como fui nos dias do meu outono, quando Deus protegia a minha casa, | 4 As I was in the days of my youth, when God was secretly in my tabernacle? |
| 5 quando o Omnipotente estava comigo, e meus filhos em volta de mim; | 5 When the Almighty was with me: and my servants round about me? |
| 6 quando eu (por assim dizer) lavava os meus pés em leite, e quando a pedra derramava para mim arrolos de azeite; | 6 When I washed my feet with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil? |
| 7 quando eu saia até à porta da cidade, e me sentava numa cadeira na praça pública! | 7 When I went out to the gate of the city, and in the street they prepared me a chair? |
| 8 Viam-me (nessa altura) os jovens e retiravam-se (reverentes); os velhos, levantando-se, punham-se de pé. | 8 The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the old men rose up and stood. |
| 9 Os príncipes cessavam de falar, e punham a mão sobre a sua boca. | 9 The princes ceased to speak, and laid the finger on their mouth. |
| 10 Os grandes continham a sua voz, e a sua língua ficava pegada ao paladar. | 10 The rulers held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to their throat. |
| 11 O ouvido que me escutava, chamava-me bem-aventurado, e os olhos que me viam, davam (bom) testemunho de mim, | 11 The ear that heard me blessed me, and the eye that saw me gave witness to me: |
| 12 porque eu livrava o aflito suplicante, e o órfão, que não tinha quem o socorresse, | 12 Because I had delivered the poor man that cried out; and the fatherless that had no helper. |
| 13 A bênção do que estava a perecer vinha sobre mim, e eu consolava o coração da viúva. | 13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me, and I comforted the heart of the widow. |
| 14 Revesti-me de justiça, e a equidade serviu-me como de vestido e de diadema. | 14 I was clad with justice: and I clothed myself with my judgment, as with a robe and a diadem. |
| 15 Fui o olho do cego, e o pé do coxo. | 15 I was an eye to the blind, and a foot to the lame. |
| 16 Eu era o pai dos pobres, e as causas (dos pobres) de que eu não tinha conhecimento, informava-me delas com toda a diligência. | 16 I was the father of the poor: and the cause which I knew not, I searched out most diligently. |
| 17 Eu quebrava as maxilas do iníquo, e tirava-lhe a presa dentre os dentes. | 17 I broke the jaws of the wicked man, and out of his teeth I took away the prey. |
| 18 Eu dizia: Morrerei no meu ninho, e multiplicarei os dias como a areia. | 18 And I said: I shall die in my nest, and as a palm tree shall multiply my days. |
| 19 A minha raiz estende-se ao longo das águas, e o orvalho descansa sobre os meus ramos. | 19 My root is opened beside the waters, and dew shall continue in my harvest. |
| 20 A minha glória sempre se renovará, e o meu arco fortificar-se-á na minha mão. | 20 My glory shall always be renewed, and my bow in my hand shall be repaired. |
| 21 Os que me ouviam esperavam a minha opinião, e em silêncio estavam atentos ao meu conselho. | 21 They that heard me, waited for my sentence, and being attentive held their peace at my counsel. |
| 22 Não ousavam juntar nada ás minhas palavras, e as minhas razões caíam sobre eles como orvalho. | 22 To my words they durst add nothing, and my speech dropped upon them. |
| 23 Esperavam-me como a chuva, e abriam a sua boca como (faz a terra seca) às águas da primavera. | 23 They waited for me as for rain, and they opened their mouth as for a latter shower. |
| 24 Se alguma vez lhes sorria, não o acreditavam, e a luz do meu rosto não caia por terra. | 24 If at any time I laughed on them, they believed not, and the light of my countenance fell not on earth. |
| 25 Quando ia ter com eles, sentava-me no primeiro lugar, como um rei no meio do seu exército, como um consolador dos aflitos. | 25 If I had a mind to go to them, I sat first, and when I sat as a king, with his army standing about him, yet I was a comforter of them that mourned. |
