VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Post hæc audivi quasi vocem turbarum multarum in cælo dicentium : Alleluja : salus, et gloria, et virtus Deo nostro est :1 After this I heard what seemed to be the great sound of a huge crowd in heaven, singing, 'Al eluia!Salvation and glory and power to our God!
He judges fairly, he punishes justly, and he has condemned the great prostitute who corrupted theearth with her prostitution; he has avenged the blood of his servants which she shed.'
Et iterum dixerunt : Alleluja. Et fumus ejus ascendit in sæcula sæculorum.3 And again they sang, 'Alleluia! The smoke of her wil rise for ever and ever.'
Et ceciderunt seniores viginti quatuor, et quatuor animalia, et adoraverunt Deum sedentem super thronum, dicentes : Amen : alleluja.4 Then the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures threw themselves down and worshipped Godseated on his throne, and they cried, 'Amen, Alleluia.'
Et vox de throno exivit, dicens : Laudem dicite Deo nostro omnes servi ejus : et qui timetis eum pusilli et magni.5 Then a voice came from the throne; it said, 'Praise our God, you servants of his and those who fearhim, smal and great alike.'
Et audivi quasi vocem turbæ magnæ, et sicut vocem aquarum multarum, et sicut vocem tonitruorum magnorum, dicentium : Alleluja : quoniam regnavit Dominus Deus noster omnipotens.6 And I heard what seemed to be the voices of a huge crowd, like the sound of the ocean or the greatroar of thunder, answering, 'Alleluia! The reign of the Lord our God Almighty has begun;
Gaudeamus, et exsultemus : et demus gloriam ei : quia venerunt nuptiæ Agni, et uxor ejus præparavit se.7 let us be glad and joyful and give glory to God, because this is the time for the marriage of the Lamb.
Byssinum enim justificationes sunt sanctorum.8 His bride is ready, and she has been able to dress herself in dazzling white linen, because her linen ismade of the good deeds of the saints.'
The angel said, 'Write this, "Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb," ' andhe added, 'These words of God are true.'
Deum adora. Testimonium enim Jesu est spiritus prophetiæ.
Then I knelt at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, 'Never do that: I am your fellow-servant andthe fellow-servant of al your brothers who have in themselves the witness of Jesus. God alone you mustworship.' The witness of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
Et vidi cælum apertum, et ecce equus albus, et qui sedebat super eum, vocabatur Fidelis, et Verax, et cum justitia judicat et pugnat.11 And now I saw heaven open, and a white horse appear; its rider was cal ed Trustworthy and True; inuprightness he judges and makes war.
His eyes were flames of fire, and he was crowned with many coronets; the name written on him wasknown only to himself,
Et vestitus erat veste aspersa sanguine : et vocatur nomen ejus : Verbum Dei.13 his cloak was soaked in blood. He is known by the name, The Word of God.
Et exercitus qui sunt in cælo, sequebantur eum in equis albis, vestiti byssino albo et mundo.14 Behind him, dressed in linen of dazzling white, rode the armies of heaven on white horses.
Et ipse reget eas in virga ferrea : et ipse calcat torcular vini furoris iræ Dei omnipotentis.15 From his mouth came a sharp sword with which to strike the unbelievers; he is the one who wil rulethem with an iron sceptre, and tread out the wine of Almighty God's fierce retribution.
Et habet in vestimento et in femore suo scriptum : Rex regum et Dominus dominantium.
On his cloak and on his thigh a name was written: King of kings and Lord of lords.
Et vidi unum angelum stantem in sole, et clamavit voce magna, dicens omnibus avibus, quæ volabant per medium cæli : Venite, et congregamini ad c?nam magnam Dei :17 I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he shouted aloud to al the birds that were flying highoverhead in the sky, 'Come here. Gather together at God's great feast.
ut manducetis carnes regum, et carnes tribunorum, et carnes fortium, et carnes equorum, et sedentium in ipsis, et carnes omnium liberorum, et servorum, et pusillorum et magnorum.18 You wil eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of great generals and heroes, the flesh of horses andtheir riders and of al kinds of people, citizens and slaves, smal and great alike.'
Et vidi bestiam, et reges terræ, et exercitus eorum congregatos ad faciendum prælium cum illo, qui sedebat in equo, et cum exercitu ejus.19 Then I saw the beast, with al the kings of the earth and their armies, gathered together to fight theRider and his army.
Vivi missi sunt hi duo in stagnum ignis ardentis sulphure :20 But the beast was taken prisoner, together with the false prophet who had worked miracles on thebeast's behalf and by them had deceived those who had accepted branding with the mark of the beast and thosewho had worshipped his statue. These two were hurled alive into the fiery lake of burning sulphur.
et ceteri occisi sunt in gladio sedentis super equum, qui procedit de ore ipsius : et omnes aves saturatæ sunt carnibus eorum.21 Al the rest were kil ed by the sword of the Rider, which came out of his mouth, and al the birdsglutted themselves with their flesh.
