VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Quicumque sunt sub jugo servi, dominos suos omni honore dignos arbitrentur, ne nomen Domini et doctrina blasphemetur.1 Al those under the yoke of slavery must have unqualified respect for their masters, so that the name ofGod and our teaching are not brought into disrepute.
2 Qui autem fideles habent dominos, non contemnant, quia fratres sunt : sed magis serviant, quia fideles sunt et dilecti, qui beneficii participes sunt. Hæc doce, et exhortare.
2 Those whose masters are believers are not to respect them less because they are brothers; on thecontrary, they should serve them al the better, since those who have the benefit of their services are believersand dear to God. This is what you are to teach and urge.
3 Si quis aliter docet, et non acquiescit sanis sermonibus Domini nostri Jesu Christi, et ei, quæ secundum pietatem est, doctrinæ :3 Anyone who teaches anything different and does not keep to the sound teaching which is that of ourLord Jesus Christ, the doctrine which is in accordance with true religion,
4 superbus est, nihil sciens, sed languens circa quæstiones, et pugnas verborum : ex quibus oriuntur invidiæ, contentiones, blasphemiæ, suspiciones malæ,4 is proud and has no understanding, but rather a weakness for questioning everything and arguing aboutwords. Al that can come of this is jealousy, contention, abuse and evil mistrust;
5 conflictationes hominum mente corruptorum, et qui veritate privati sunt, existimantium quæstum esse pietatem.5 and unending disputes by people who are depraved in mind and deprived of truth, and imagine thatreligion is a way of making a profit.
6 Est autem quæstus magnus pietas cum sufficientia.6 Religion, of course, does bring large profits, but only to those who are content with what they have.
7 Nihil enim intulimus in hunc mundum : haud dubium quod nec auferre quid possumus.7 We brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it;
8 Habentes autem alimenta, et quibus tegamur, his contenti simus.8 but as long as we have food and clothing, we shal be content with that.
9 Nam qui volunt divites fieri, incidunt in tentationem, et in laqueum diaboli, et desideria multa inutilia, et nociva, quæ mergunt homines in interitum et perditionem.9 People who long to be rich are a prey to trial; they get trapped into all sorts of foolish and harmfulambitions which plunge people into ruin and destruction.
10 Radix enim omnium malorum est cupiditas : quam quidam appetentes erraverunt a fide, et inseruerunt se doloribus multis.
10 'The love of money is the root of all evils' and there are some who, pursuing it, have wandered awayfrom the faith and so given their souls any number of fatal wounds.
11 Tu autem, o homo Dei, hæc fuge : sectare vero justitiam, pietatem, fidem, caritatem, patientiam, mansuetudinem.11 But, as someone dedicated to God, avoid al that. You must aim to be upright and religious, fil ed withfaith and love, perseverance and gentleness.
12 Certa bonum certamen fidei, apprehende vitam æternam, in qua vocatus es, et confessus bonam confessionem coram multis testibus.12 Fight the good fight of faith and win the eternal life to which you were cal ed and for which you madeyour noble profession of faith before many witnesses.
13 Præcipio tibi coram Deo, qui vivificat omnia, et Christo Jesu, qui testimonium reddidit sub Pontio Pilato, bonam confessionem,13 Now, before God, the source of all life, and before Jesus Christ, who witnessed to his noble professionof faith before Pontius Pilate, I charge you
14 ut serves mandatum sine macula, irreprehensibile usque in adventum Domini nostri Jesu Christi,14 to do al that you have been told, with no faults or failures, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 quem suis temporibus ostendet beatus et solus potens, Rex regum, et Dominus dominantium :15 who at the due time wil be revealed by God, the blessed and only Ruler of al , the King of kings andthe Lord of lords,
16 qui solus habet immortalitatem, et lucem inhabitat inaccessibilem : quem nullus hominum vidit, sed nec videre potest : cui honor, et imperium sempiternum. Amen.16 who alone is immortal, whose home is in inaccessible light, whom no human being has seen or is ableto see: to him be honour and everlasting power. Amen.
17 Divitibus hujus sæculi præcipe non sublime sapere, neque sperare in incerto divitiarum, sed in Deo vivo (qui præstat nobis omnia abunde ad fruendum)17 Instruct those who are rich in this world's goods that they should not be proud and should set theirhopes not on money, which is untrustworthy, but on God who gives us richly al that we need for our happiness.
18 bene agere, divites fieri in bonis operibus, facile tribuere, communicare,18 They are to do good and be rich in good works, generous in giving and always ready to share-
19 thesaurizare sibi fundamentum bonum in futurum, ut apprehendant veram vitam.
19 this is the way they can amass a good capital sum for the future if they want to possess the only lifethat is real.
20 O Timothee, depositum custodi, devitans profanas vocum novitates, et oppositiones falsi nominis scientiæ,20 My dear Timothy, take great care of al that has been entrusted to you. Turn away from godlessphilosophical discussions and the contradictions of the 'knowledge' which is not knowledge at al ;
21 quam quidam promittentes, circa fidem exciderunt. Gratia tecum. Amen.21 by adopting this, some have missed the goal of faith. Grace be with you.
