Omnino auditur inter vos fornicatio, et talis fornicatio, qualis nec inter gentes, ita ut uxorem patris sui aliquis habeat.1 It is widely reported that there is sexual immorality among you, immorality of a kind that is not foundeven among gentiles: that one of you is living with his stepmother.
Et vos inflati estis : et non magis luctum habuistis ut tollatur de medio vestrum qui hoc opus fecit.2 And you so fil ed with your own self-importance! It would have been better if you had been grievingbitterly, so that the man who has done this thing were turned out of the community.
Ego quidem absens corpore, præsens autem spiritu, jam judicavi ut præsens eum, qui sic operatus est,3 For my part, however distant I am physical y, I am present in spirit and have already condemned theman who behaved in this way, just as though I were present in person.
in nomine Domini nostri Jesu Christi, congregatis vobis et meo spiritu, cum virtute Domini nostri Jesu,4 When you have gathered together in the name of our Lord Jesus, with the presence of my spirit, and inthe power of our Lord Jesus,
tradere hujusmodi Satanæ in interitum carnis, ut spiritus salvus sit in die Domini nostri Jesu Christi.
hand such a man over to Satan, to be destroyed as far as natural life is concerned, so that on the Dayof the Lord his spirit may be saved.
Non est bona gloriatio vestra. Nescitis quia modicum fermentum totam massam corrumpit ?6 Your self-satisfaction is il founded. Do you not realise that only a little yeast leavens the whole batch ofdough?
Expurgate vetus fermentum, ut sitis nova conspersio, sicut estis azymi. Etenim Pascha nostrum immolatus est Christus.7 Throw out the old yeast so that you can be the fresh dough, unleavened as you are. For our Passoverhas been sacrificed, that is, Christ;
Itaque epulemur : non in fermento veteri, neque in fermento malitiæ et nequitiæ : sed in azymis sinceritatis et veritatis.8 let us keep the feast, then, with none of the old yeast and no leavening of evil and wickedness, but onlythe unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Scripsi vobis in epistola : Ne commisceamini fornicariis :9 In my letter, I wrote to you that you should have nothing to do with people living immoral lives.
non utique fornicariis hujus mundi, aut avaris, aut rapacibus, aut idolis servientibus : alioquin debueratis de hoc mundo exiisse.10 I was not including everybody in this present world who is sexually immoral, or everybody who isgreedy, or dishonest or worships false gods -- that would mean you would have to cut yourselves off completelyfrom the world.
Nunc autem scripsi vobis non commisceri : si is qui frater nominatur, est fornicator, aut avarus, aut idolis serviens, aut maledicus, aut ebriosus, aut rapax, cum ejusmodi nec cibum sumere.11 In fact what I meant was that you were not to have anything to do with anyone going by the name ofbrother who is sexual y immoral, or is greedy, or worships false gods, or is a slanderer or a drunkard ordishonest; never even have a meal with anybody of that kind.
Quid enim mihi de iis qui foris sunt, judicare ? nonne de iis qui intus sunt, vos judicatis ?12 It is no concern of mine to judge outsiders. It is for you to judge those who are inside, is it not?
nam eos qui foris sunt, Deus judicabit. Auferte malum ex vobis ipsis.13 But outsiders are for God to judge. You must banish this evil-doer from among you.
