VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Petrus autem et Joannes ascendebant in templum ad horam orationis nonam.1 Once, when Peter and John were going up to the Temple for the prayers at the ninth hour,
Et quidam vir, qui erat claudus ex utero matris suæ, bajulabatur : quem ponebant quotidie ad portam templi, quæ dicitur Speciosa, ut peteret eleemosynam ab introëuntibus in templum.2 it happened that there was a man being carried along. He was a cripple from birth; and they used to puthim down every day near the Temple entrance cal ed the Beautiful Gate so that he could beg from the peoplegoing in.
Is cum vidisset Petrum et Joannem incipientes introire in templum, rogabat ut eleemosynam acciperet.3 When this man saw Peter and John on their way into the Temple he begged from them.
Intuens autem in eum Petrus cum Joanne, dixit : Respice in nos.4 Peter, and John too, looked straight at him and said, 'Look at us.'
At ille intendebat in eos, sperans se aliquid accepturum ab eis.5 He turned to them expectantly, hoping to get something from them,
Petrus autem dixit : Argentum et aurum non est mihi : quod autem habeo, hoc tibi do : in nomine Jesu Christi Nazareni surge, et ambula.6 but Peter said, 'I have neither silver nor gold, but I wil give you what I have: in the name of Jesus Christthe Nazarene, walk!'
Et apprehensa manu ejus dextera, allevavit eum, et protinus consolidatæ sunt bases ejus et plantæ.7 Then he took him by the right hand and helped him to stand up. Instantly his feet and ankles becamefirm,
Et exiliens stetit, et ambulabat : et intravit cum illis in templum ambulans, et exiliens, et laudans Deum.8 he jumped up, stood, and began to walk, and he went with them into the Temple, walking and jumpingand praising God.
Et vidit omnis populus eum ambulantem et laudantem Deum.9 Everyone could see him walking and praising God,
Cognoscebant autem illum, quod ipse erat qui ad eleemosynam sedebat ad Speciosam portam templi : et impleti sunt stupore et extasi in eo quod contigerat illi.10 and they recognised him as the man who used to sit begging at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple. Theywere all astonished and perplexed at what had happened to him.
Cum teneret autem Petrum et Joannem, cucurrit omnis populus ad eos ad porticum quæ appellatur Salomonis, stupentes.
Everyone came running towards them in great excitement, to the Portico of Solomon, as it is called,where the man was stil clinging to Peter and John.
Videns autem Petrus, respondit ad populum : Viri Israëlitæ, quid miramini in hoc, aut nos quid intuemini, quasi nostra virtute aut potestate fecerimus hunc ambulare ?12 When Peter saw the people he addressed them, 'Men of Israel, why are you so surprised at this? Whyare you staring at us as though we had made this man walk by our own power or holiness?
Deus Abraham, et Deus Isaac, et Deus Jacob, Deus patrum nostrorum glorificavit filium suum Jesum, quem vos quidem tradidistis, et negastis ante faciem Pilati, judicante illo dimitti.13 It is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, who has glorified his servantJesus whom you handed over and then disowned in the presence of Pilate after he had given his verdict torelease him.
Vos autem sanctum et justum negastis, et petistis virum homicidam donari vobis :14 It was you who accused the Holy and Upright One, you who demanded that a murderer should bereleased to you
auctorem vero vitæ interfecistis, quem Deus suscitavit a mortuis, cujus nos testes sumus.15 while you killed the prince of life. God, however, raised him from the dead, and to that fact we are witnesses;
Et in fide nominis ejus, hunc quem vos vidistis et nostis, confirmavit nomen ejus : et fides, quæ per eum est, dedit integram sanitatem istam in conspectu omnium vestrum.16 and it is the name of Jesus which, through faith in him, has brought back the strength of this manwhom you see here and who is wel known to you. It is faith in him that has restored this man to health, as youcan al see.
Et nunc, fratres, scio quia per ignorantiam fecistis, sicut et principes vestri.17 'Now I know, brothers, that neither you nor your leaders had any idea what you were real y doing;
Deus autem, quæ prænuntiavit per os omnium prophetarum, pati Christum suum, sic implevit.18 but this was the way God carried out what he had foretold, when he said through all his prophets thathis Christ would suffer.
Pœnitemini igitur et convertimini, ut deleantur peccata vestra :19 Now you must repent and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out,
ut cum venerint tempora refrigerii a conspectu Domini, et miserit eum qui prædicatus est vobis, Jesum Christum,20 and so that the Lord may send the time of comfort. Then he wil send you the Christ he haspredestined, that is Jesus,
quem oportet quidem cælum suscipere usque in tempora restitutionis omnium quæ locutus est Deus per os sanctorum suorum a sæculo prophetarum.21 whom heaven must keep til the universal restoration comes which God proclaimed, speaking throughhis holy prophets.
Moyses quidem dixit : Quoniam prophetam suscitabit vobis Dominus Deus vester de fratribus vestris, tamquam me : ipsum audietis juxta omnia quæcumque locutus fuerit vobis.22 Moses, for example, said, "From among your brothers the Lord God wil raise up for you a prophet likeme; you wil listen to whatever he tells you.
Erit autem : omnis anima quæ non audierit prophetam illum, exterminabitur de plebe.23 Anyone who refuses to listen to that prophet shal be cut off from the people."
Et omnes prophetæ, a Samuel et deinceps, qui locuti sunt, annuntiaverunt dies istos.24 In fact, al the prophets that have ever spoken, from Samuel onwards, have predicted these days.
Vos estis filii prophetarum, et testamenti quod disposuit Deus ad patres nostros, dicens ad Abraham : Et in semine tuo benedicentur omnes familiæ terræ.25 'You are the heirs of the prophets, the heirs of the covenant God made with your ancestors when hetold Abraham, "Al the nations of the earth will be blessed in your descendants".
Vobis primum Deus suscitans filium suum, misit eum benedicentem vobis : ut convertat se unusquisque a nequitia sua.26 It was for you in the first place that God raised up his servant and sent him to bless you as every one ofyou turns from his wicked ways.'
