VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Tunc ergo apprehendit Pilatus Jesum, et flagellavit.1 Pilate then had Jesus taken away and scourged;
Et milites plectentes coronam de spinis, imposuerunt capiti ejus : et veste purpurea circumdederunt eum.2 and after this, the soldiers twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on his head and dressed him ina purple robe.
Et veniebant ad eum, et dicebant : Ave, rex Judæorum : et dabant ei alapas.3 They kept coming up to him and saying, 'Hail, king of the Jews!' and slapping him in the face.
Exivit ergo iterum Pilatus foras, et dicit eis : Ecce adduco vobis eum foras, ut cognoscatis quia nullam invenio in eo causam.4 Pilate came outside again and said to them, 'Look, I am going to bring him out to you to let you seethat I find no case against him.'
(Exivit ergo Jesus portans coronam spineam, et purpureum vestimentum.) Et dicit eis : Ecce homo.5 Jesus then came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said, 'Here is the man.'
When they saw him, the chief priests and the guards shouted, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!' Pilate said,'Take him yourselves and crucify him: I find no case against him.'
Responderunt ei Judæi : Nos legem habemus, et secundum legem debet mori, quia Filium Dei se fecit.7 The Jews replied, 'We have a Law, and according to that Law he ought to be put to death, because hehas claimed to be Son of God.'
Cum ergo audisset Pilatus hunc sermonem, magis timuit.8 When Pilate heard them say this his fears increased.
Jesus autem responsum non dedit ei.9 Re-entering the Praetorium, he said to Jesus, 'Where do you come from?' But Jesus made no answer.
Dicit ergo ei Pilatus : Mihi non loqueris ? nescis quia potestatem habeo crucifigere te, et potestatem habeo dimittere te ?10 Pilate then said to him, 'Are you refusing to speak to me? Surely you know I have power to releaseyou and I have power to crucify you?'
Respondit Jesus : Non haberes potestatem adversum me ullam, nisi tibi datum esset desuper. Propterea qui me tradidit tibi, majus peccatum habet.11 Jesus replied, 'You would have no power over me at al if it had not been given you from above; thatis why the man who handed me over to you has the greater guilt.'
From that moment Pilate was anxious to set him free, but the Jews shouted, 'If you set him free youare no friend of Caesar's; anyone who makes himself king is defying Caesar.'
Pilatus autem cum audisset hos sermones, adduxit foras Jesum : et sedit pro tribunali, in loco qui dicitur Lithostrotos, hebraice autem Gabbatha.13 Hearing these words, Pilate had Jesus brought out, and seated him on the chair of judgement at aplace cal ed the Pavement, in Hebrew Gabbatha.
Erat autem parasceve Paschæ, hora quasi sexta, et dicit Judæis : Ecce rex vester.14 It was the Day of Preparation, about the sixth hour. 'Here is your king,' said Pilate to the Jews.
Illi autem clamabant : Tolle, tolle, crucifige eum. Dicit eis Pilatus : Regem vestrum crucifigam ? Responderunt pontifices : Non habemus regem, nisi Cæsarem.15 But they shouted, 'Away with him, away with him, crucify him.' Pilate said, 'Shall I crucify your king?'The chief priests answered, 'We have no king except Caesar.'
Tunc ergo tradidit eis illum ut crucifigeretur. Susceperunt autem Jesum, et eduxerunt.
So at that Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. They then took charge of Jesus,
Et bajulans sibi crucem exivit in eum, qui dicitur Calvariæ locum, hebraice autem Golgotha :17 and carrying his own cross he went out to the Place of the Skul or, as it is cal ed in Hebrew,Golgotha,
ubi crucifixerunt eum, et cum eo alios duos hinc et hinc, medium autem Jesum.18 where they crucified him with two others, one on either side, Jesus being in the middle.
Erat autem scriptum : Jesus Nazarenus, Rex Judæorum.19 Pilate wrote out a notice and had it fixed to the cross; it ran: 'Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews'.
Hunc ergo titulum multi Judæorum legerunt : quia prope civitatem erat locus, ubi crucifixus est Jesus, et erat scriptum hebraice, græce, et latine.20 This notice was read by many of the Jews, because the place where Jesus was crucified was nearthe city, and the writing was in Hebrew, Latin and Greek.
Dicebant ergo Pilato pontifices Judæorum : Noli scribere : Rex Judæorum : sed quia ipse dixit : Rex sum Judæorum.21 So the Jewish chief priests said to Pilate, 'You should not write "King of the Jews", but that the mansaid, "I am King of the Jews". '
Respondit Pilatus : Quod scripsi, scripsi.22 Pilate answered, 'What I have written, I have written.'
Milites ergo cum crucifixissent eum, acceperunt vestimenta ejus (et fecerunt quatuor partes, unicuique militi partem) et tunicam. Erat autem tunica inconsutilis, desuper contexta per totum.23 When the soldiers had finished crucifying Jesus they took his clothing and divided it into four shares,one for each soldier. His undergarment was seamless, woven in one piece from neck to hem;
so they said to one another, 'Instead of tearing it, let's throw dice to decide who is to have it.' In thisway the words of scripture were fulfilled: They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothes.That is what the soldiers did.
Stabant autem juxta crucem Jesu mater ejus, et soror matris ejus, Maria Cleophæ, et Maria Magdalene.25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Maryof Magdala.
Cum vidisset ergo Jesus matrem, et discipulum stantem, quem diligebat, dicit matri suæ : Mulier, ecce filius tuus.26 Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother,'Woman, this is your son.'
Deinde dicit discipulo : Ecce mater tua. Et ex illa hora accepit eam discipulus in sua.27 Then to the disciple he said, 'This is your mother.' And from that hour the disciple took her into hishome.
Postea sciens Jesus quia omnia consummata sunt, ut consummaretur Scriptura, dixit : Sitio.28 After this, Jesus knew that everything had now been completed and, so that the scripture should becompletely fulfil ed, he said: I am thirsty.
Vas ergo erat positum aceto plenum. Illi autem spongiam plenam aceto, hyssopo circumponentes, obtulerunt ori ejus.29 A jar full of sour wine stood there; so, putting a sponge soaked in the wine on a hyssop stick, theyheld it up to his mouth.
After Jesus had taken the wine he said, 'It is fulfil ed'; and bowing his head he gave up his spirit.
Judæi ergo (quoniam parasceve erat) ut non remanerent in cruce corpora sabbato (erat enim magnus dies ille sabbati), rogaverunt Pilatum ut frangerentur eorum crura, et tollerentur.31 It was the Day of Preparation, and to avoid the bodies' remaining on the cross during the Sabbath --since that Sabbath was a day of special solemnity -- the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and thebodies taken away.
Venerunt ergo milites : et primi quidem fregerunt crura, et alterius, qui crucifixus est cum eo.32 Consequently the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with himand then of the other.
Ad Jesum autem cum venissent, ut viderunt eum jam mortuum, non fregerunt ejus crura,33 When they came to Jesus, they saw he was already dead, and so instead of breaking his legs
sed unus militum lancea latus ejus aperuit, et continuo exivit sanguis et aqua.34 one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance; and immediately there came out blood and water.
Et ille scit quia vera dicit : ut et vos credatis.35 This is the evidence of one who saw it -- true evidence, and he knows that what he says is true -- andhe gives it so that you may believe as wel .
Facta sunt enim hæc ut Scriptura impleretur : Os non comminuetis ex eo.36 Because al this happened to fulfil the words of scripture: Not one bone of his wil be broken;
Et iterum alia Scriptura dicit : Videbunt in quem transfixerunt.
and again, in another place scripture says: They wil look to the one whom they have pierced.
Venit ergo, et tulit corpus Jesu.38 After this, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus -- though a secret one because he wasafraid of the Jews -- asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave permission, so they came andtook it away.
Venit autem et Nicodemus, qui venerat ad Jesum nocte primum, ferens mixturam myrrhæ et aloës, quasi libras centum.39 Nicodemus came as wel -- the same one who had first come to Jesus at night-time -- and he broughta mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds.
Acceperunt ergo corpus Jesu, et ligaverunt illud linteis cum aromatibus, sicut mos est Judæis sepelire.40 They took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, fol owing the Jewish burialcustom.
Erat autem in loco, ubi crucifixus est, hortus : et in horto monumentum novum, in quo nondum quisquam positus erat.41 At the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in this garden a new tomb in whichno one had yet been buried.
Ibi ergo propter parasceven Judæorum, quia juxta erat monumentum, posuerunt Jesum.42 Since it was the Jewish Day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
