VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Now it happened that he was standing one day by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the crowd pressinground him listening to the word of God,
Et vidit duas naves stantes secus stagnum : piscatores autem descenderant, et lavabant retia.2 when he caught sight of two boats at the water's edge. The fishermen had got out of them and werewashing their nets.
Ascendens autem in unam navim, quæ erat Simonis, rogavit eum a terra reducere pusillum. Et sedens docebat de navicula turbas.
He got into one of the boats -- it was Simon's -- and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then hesat down and taught the crowds from the boat.
Ut cessavit autem loqui, dixit ad Simonem : Duc in altum, et laxate retia vestra in capturam.4 When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, 'Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for acatch.'
Et respondens Simon, dixit illi : Præceptor, per totam noctem laborantes nihil cepimus : in verbo autem tuo laxabo rete.5 Simon replied, 'Master, we worked hard al night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I wil payout the nets.'
Et cum hoc fecissent, concluserunt piscium multitudinem copiosam : rumpebatur autem rete eorum.6 And when they had done this they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear,
Et venerunt, et impleverunt ambas naviculas, ita ut pene mergerentur.7 so they signal ed to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when these came, theyfilled both boats to sinking point.
Quod cum videret Simon Petrus, procidit ad genua Jesu, dicens : Exi a me, quia homo peccator sum, Domine.8 When Simon Peter saw this he fel at the knees of Jesus saying, 'Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.'
Stupor enim circumdederat eum, et omnes qui cum illo erant, in captura piscium, quam ceperant :9 For he and all his companions were completely awestruck at the catch they had made;
Et ait ad Simonem Jesus : Noli timere : ex hoc jam homines eris capiens.10 so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's partners. But Jesus said to Simon,'Do not be afraid; from now on it is people you wil be catching.'
Then, bringing their boats back to land they left everything and fol owed him.
Now it happened that Jesus was in one of the towns when suddenly a man appeared, covered with askin-disease. Seeing Jesus he fel on his face and implored him saying, 'Sir, if you are wil ing you can cleanseme.'
Et extendens manum, tetigit eum dicens : Volo : mundare. Et confestim lepra discessit ab illo.13 He stretched out his hand, and touched him saying, 'I am wil ing. Be cleansed.' At once the skin-disease left him.
Et ipse præcepit illi ut nemini diceret : sed, Vade, ostende te sacerdoti, et offer pro emundatione tua, sicut præcepit Moyses, in testimonium illis.14 He ordered him to tell no one, 'But go and show yourself to the priest and make the offering for yourcleansing just as Moses prescribed, as evidence to them.'
Perambulabat autem magis sermo de illo : et conveniebant turbæ multæ ut audirent, et curarentur ab infirmitatibus suis.15 But the news of him kept spreading, and large crowds would gather to hear him and to have theiril nesses cured,
Ipse autem secedebat in desertum, et orabat.
but he would go off to some deserted place and pray.
Et erant pharisæi sedentes, et legis doctores, qui venerant ex omni castello Galilææ, et Judææ, et Jerusalem : et virtus Domini erat ad sanandum eos.17 Now it happened that he was teaching one day, and Pharisees and teachers of the Law, who hadcome from every vil age in Galilee, from Judaea and from Jerusalem, were sitting there. And the power of theLord was there so that he should heal.
And now some men appeared, bringing on a bed a paralysed man whom they were trying to bring inand lay down in front of him.
Et non invenientes qua parte illum inferrent præ turba, ascenderunt supra tectum, et per tegulas summiserunt eum cum lecto in medium ante Jesum.19 But as they could find no way of getting the man through the crowd, they went up onto the top of thehouse and lowered him and his stretcher down through the tiles into the middle of the gathering, in front ofJesus.
Quorum fidem ut vidit, dixit : Homo, remittuntur tibi peccata tua.20 Seeing their faith he said, 'My friend, your sins are forgiven you.'
Et cœperunt cogitare scribæ et pharisæi, dicentes : Quis est hic, qui loquitur blasphemias ? quis potest dimittere peccata, nisi solus Deus ?21 The scribes and the Pharisees began to think this over. 'Who is this man, talking blasphemy? Who butGod alone can forgive sins?'
Ut cognovit autem Jesus cogitationes eorum, respondens, dixit ad illos : Quid cogitatis in cordibus vestris ?22 But Jesus, aware of their thoughts, made them this reply, 'What are these thoughts you have in yourhearts?
Quid est facilius dicere : Dimittuntur tibi peccata : an dicere : Surge, et ambula ?23 Which of these is easier: to say, "Your sins are forgiven you," or to say, "Get up and walk"?
Ut autem sciatis quia Filius hominis habet potestatem in terra dimittendi peccata, (ait paralytico) tibi dico, surge, tolle lectum tuum, et vade in domum tuam.24 But to prove to you that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins,' -- he said to theparalysed man-'I order you: get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.'
Et confestim consurgens coram illis, tulit lectum in quo jacebat : et abiit in domum suam, magnificans Deum.25 And immediately before their very eyes he got up, picked up what he had been lying on and wenthome praising God.
They were all astounded and praised God and were fil ed with awe, saying, 'We have seen strangethings today.'
Et post hæc exiit, et vidit publicanum nomine Levi, sedentem ad telonium, et ait illi : Sequere me.27 When he went out after this, he noticed a tax collector, Levi by name, sitting at the tax office, and saidto him, 'Fol ow me.'
Et relictis omnibus, surgens secutus est eum.28 And leaving everything Levi got up and fol owed him.
Et fecit ei convivium magnum Levi in domo sua : et erat turba multa publicanorum, et aliorum qui cum illis erant discumbentes.29 In his honour Levi held a great reception in his house, and with them at table was a large gathering oftax col ectors and others.
Et murmurabant pharisæi et scribæ eorum, dicentes ad discipulos ejus : Quare cum publicanis et peccatoribus manducatis et bibitis ?30 The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples and said, 'Why do you eat and drink withtax col ectors and sinners?'
Et respondens Jesus, dixit ad illos : Non egent qui sani sunt medico, sed qui male habent.31 Jesus said to them in reply, 'It is not those that are wel who need the doctor, but the sick.
I have come to cal not the upright but sinners to repentance.'
At illi dixerunt ad eum : Quare discipuli Joannis jejunant frequenter, et obsecrationes faciunt, similiter et pharisæorum : tui autem edunt et bibunt ?33 They then said to him, 'John's disciples are always fasting and saying prayers, and the disciples of thePharisees, too, but yours go on eating and drinking.'
Quibus ipse ait : Numquid potestis filios sponsi, dum cum illis est sponsus, facere jejunare ?34 Jesus replied, 'Surely you cannot make the bridegroom's attendants fast while the bridegroom is stillwith them?
Venient autem dies, cum ablatus fuerit ab illis sponsus : tunc jejunabunt in illis diebus.35 But the time wil come when the bridegroom is taken away from them; then, in those days, they wilfast.'
Dicebat autem et similitudinem ad illos : Quia nemo commissuram a novo vestimento immittit in vestimentum vetus : alioquin et novum rumpit, et veteri non convenit commissura a novo.36 He also told them a parable, 'No one tears a piece from a new cloak to put it on an old cloak;otherwise, not only wil the new one be torn, but the piece taken from the new wil not match the old.
Et nemo mittit vinum novum in utres veteres : alioquin rumpet vinum novum utres, et ipsum effundetur, et utres peribunt :37 'And nobody puts new wine in old wineskins; otherwise, the new wine wil burst the skins and run towaste, and the skins wil be ruined.
sed vinum novum in utres novos mittendum est, et utraque conservantur.38 No; new wine must be put in fresh skins.
Et nemo bibens vetus, statim vult novum : dicit enim : Vetus melius est.39 And nobody who has been drinking old wine wants new. "The old is good," he says.'
