VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Initium Evangelii Jesu Christi, Filii Dei.1 The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Sicut scriptum est in Isaia propheta : Ecce ego mitto angelum meum ante faciem tuam,
qui præparabit viam tuam ante te.
It is written in the prophet Isaiah: Look, I am going to send my messenger in front of you to prepare yourway before you.
Vox clamantis in deserto :
Parate viam Domini, rectas facite semitas ejus.
A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.
Fuit Joannes in deserto baptizans, et prædicans baptismum pœnitentiæ in remissionem peccatorum.4 John the Baptist was in the desert, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Et egrediebatur ad eum omnis Judææ regio, et Jerosolymitæ universi, et baptizabantur ab illo in Jordanis flumine, confitentes peccata sua.5 All Judaea and all the people of Jerusalem made their way to him, and as they were baptised by him inthe river Jordan they confessed their sins.
Et erat Joannes vestitus pilis cameli, et zona pellicea circa lumbos ejus, et locustas et mel silvestre edebat.6 John wore a garment of camel-skin, and he lived on locusts and wild honey.
Et prædicabat dicens : Venit fortior me post me, cujus non sum dignus procumbens solvere corrigiam calceamentorum ejus.7 In the course of his preaching he said, 'After me is coming someone who is more powerful than me, andI am not fit to kneel down and undo the strap of his sandals.
Ego baptizavi vos aqua, ille vero baptizabit vos Spiritu Sancto.
I have baptised you with water, but he wil baptise you with the Holy Spirit.'
Et factum est : in diebus illis venit Jesus a Nazareth Galilææ : et baptizatus est a Joanne in Jordane.9 It was at this time that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptised in the Jordan by John.
Et statim ascendens de aqua, vidit cælos apertos, et Spiritum tamquam columbam descendentem, et manentem in ipso.10 And at once, as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit, likea dove, descending on him.
Et vox facta est de cælis : Tu es Filius meus dilectus, in te complacui.
And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you.'
Et statim Spiritus expulit eum in desertum.12 And at once the Spirit drove him into the desert
Et erat in deserto quadraginta diebus, et quadraginta noctibus : et tentabatur a Satana : eratque cum bestiis, et angeli ministrabant illi.
and he remained there for forty days, and was put to the test by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels looked after him.
Postquam autem traditus est Joannes, venit Jesus in Galilæam, prædicans Evangelium regni Dei,14 After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the gospel from Godsaying,
et dicens : Quoniam impletum est tempus, et appropinquavit regnum Dei : pœnitemini, et credite Evangelio.15 'The time is fulfil ed, and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the gospel.'
Et præteriens secus mare Galilææ, vidit Simonem, et Andream fratrem ejus, mittentes retia in mare (erant enim piscatores),16 As he was walking along by the Lake of Galilee he saw Simon and Simon's brother Andrew casting anet in the lake -- for they were fishermen.
et dixit eis Jesus : Venite post me, et faciam vos fieri piscatores hominum.17 And Jesus said to them, 'Come after me and I will make you into fishers of people.'
Et protinus relictis retibus, secuti sunt eum.18 And at once they left their nets and fol owed him.
Et progressus inde pusillum, vidit Jacobum Zebedæi, et Joannem fratrem ejus, et ipsos componentes retia in navi :19 Going on a little further, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they too were in theirboat, mending the nets.
et statim vocavit illos. Et relicto patre suo Zebedæo in navi cum mercenariis, secuti sunt eum.
At once he called them and, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the men he employed, theywent after him.
Et ingrediuntur Capharnaum : et statim sabbatis ingressus in synagogam, docebat eos.21 They went as far as Capernaum, and at once on the Sabbath he went into the synagogue and beganto teach.
Et stupebant super doctrina ejus : erat enim docens eos quasi potestatem habens, et non sicut scribæ.22 And his teaching made a deep impression on them because, unlike the scribes, he taught them withauthority.
Et erat in synagoga eorum homo in spiritu immundo : et exclamavit,23 And at once in their synagogue there was a man with an unclean spirit, and he shouted,
dicens : Quid nobis et tibi, Jesu Nazarene ? venisti perdere nos ? scio qui sis, Sanctus Dei.24 'What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are:the Holy One of God.'
Et comminatus est ei Jesus, dicens : Obmutesce, et exi de homine.25 But Jesus rebuked it saying, 'Be quiet! Come out of him!'
Et discerpens eum spiritus immundus, et exclamans voce magna, exiit ab eo.26 And the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry went out of him.
Et mirati sunt omnes, ita ut conquirerent inter se dicentes : Quidnam est hoc ? quænam doctrina hæc nova ? quia in potestate etiam spiritibus immundis imperat, et obediunt ei.27 The people were so astonished that they started asking one another what it al meant, saying, 'Here isa teaching that is new, and with authority behind it: he gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey him.'
Et processit rumor ejus statim in omnem regionem Galilææ.
And his reputation at once spread everywhere, through all the surrounding Galilean countryside.
Et protinus egredientes de synagoga, venerunt in domum Simonis et Andreæ, cum Jacobo et Joanne.29 And at once on leaving the synagogue, he went with James and John straight to the house of Simonand Andrew.
Decumbebat autem socrus Simonis febricitans : et statim dicunt ei de illa.30 Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed and feverish, and at once they told him about her.
Et accedens elevavit eam, apprehensa manu ejus : et continuo dimisit eam febris, et ministrabat eis.
He went in to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began toserve them.
Vespere autem facto cum occidisset sol, afferebant ad eum omnes male habentes, et dæmonia habentes :32 That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed bydevils.
et erat omnis civitas congregata ad januam.33 The whole town came crowding round the door,
Et curavit multos, qui vexabantur variis languoribus, et dæmonia multa ejiciebat, et non sinebat ea loqui, quoniam sciebant eum.
and he cured many who were sick with diseases of one kind or another; he also drove out manydevils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was.
Et diluculo valde surgens, egressus abiit in desertum locum, ibique orabat.35 In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house and went off to a lonely place andprayed there.
Et prosecutus est eum Simon, et qui cum illo erant.36 Simon and his companions set out in search of him,
Et cum invenissent eum, dixerunt ei : Quia omnes quærunt te.37 and when they found him they said, 'Everybody is looking for you.'
Et ait illis : Eamus in proximos vicos, et civitates, ut et ibi prædicem : ad hoc enim veni.38 He answered, 'Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can proclaim themessage there too, because that is why I came.'
Et erat prædicans in synagogis eorum, et in omni Galilæa, et dæmonia ejiciens.
And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out devils.
Et venit ad eum leprosus deprecans eum : et genu flexo dixit ei : Si vis, potes me mundare.40 A man suffering from a virulent skin-disease came to him and pleaded on his knees saying, 'If you arewil ing, you can cleanse me.'
Jesus autem misertus ejus, extendit manum suam : et tangens eum, ait illi : Volo : mundare.41 Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said to him, 'I am willing. Becleansed.'
Et cum dixisset, statim discessit ab eo lepra, et mundatus est.42 And at once the skin-disease left him and he was cleansed.
Et comminatus est ei, statimque ejecit illum,43 And at once Jesus sternly sent him away and said to him,
et dicit ei : Vide nemini dixeris : sed vade, ostende te principi sacerdotum, et offer pro emundatione tua, quæ præcepit Moyses in testimonium illis.44 'Mind you tel no one anything, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for yourcleansing prescribed by Moses as evidence to them.'
At ille egressus cœpit prædicare, et diffamare sermonem, ita ut jam non posset manifeste introire in civitatem, sed foris in desertis locis esset, et conveniebant ad eum undique.45 The man went away, but then started freely proclaiming and tel ing the story everywhere, so thatJesus could no longer go openly into any town, but stayed outside in deserted places. Even so, people from alaround kept coming to him.
