VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Et post dies sex assumit Jesus Petrum, et Jacobum, et Joannem fratrem ejus, et ducit illos in montem excelsum seorsum :1 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a highmountain by themselves.
There in their presence he was transfigured: his face shone like the sun and his clothes became asdazzling as light.
Et ecce apparuerunt illis Moyses et Elias cum eo loquentes.3 And suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them; they were talking with him.
Then Peter spoke to Jesus. 'Lord,' he said, 'it is wonderful for us to be here; if you want me to, I willmake three shelters here, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.'
Adhuc eo loquente, ecce nubes lucida obumbravit eos. Et ecce vox de nube, dicens : Hic est Filius meus dilectus, in quo mihi bene complacui : ipsum audite.5 He was stil speaking when suddenly a bright cloud covered them with shadow, and suddenly from thecloud there came a voice which said, 'This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour. Listen to him.'
Et audientes discipuli ceciderunt in faciem suam, et timuerunt valde.6 When they heard this, the disciples fel on their faces, overcome with fear.
Et accessit Jesus, et tetigit eos : dixitque eis : Surgite, et nolite timere.7 But Jesus came up and touched them, saying, 'Stand up, do not be afraid.'
Levantes autem oculos suos, neminem viderunt, nisi solum Jesum.8 And when they raised their eyes they saw no one but Jesus.
Et descendentibus illis de monte, præcepit eis Jesus, dicens : Nemini dixeritis visionem, donec Filius hominis a mortuis resurgat.9 As they came down from the mountain Jesus gave them this order, 'Tel no one about this vision untilthe Son of man has risen from the dead.'
Et interrogaverunt eum discipuli, dicentes : Quid ergo scribæ dicunt, quod Eliam oporteat primum venire ?10 And the disciples put this question to him, 'Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?'
At ille respondens, ait eis : Elias quidem venturus est, et restituet omnia.11 He replied, 'Elijah is indeed coming, and he wil set everything right again;
Sic et Filius hominis passurus est ab eis.12 however, I tel you that Elijah has come already and they did not recognise him but treated him asthey pleased; and the Son of man wil suffer similarly at their hands.'
Tunc intellexerunt discipuli, quia de Joanne Baptista dixisset eis.
Then the disciples understood that he was speaking of John the Baptist.
Et cum venisset ad turbam, accessit ad eum homo genibus provolutus ante eum, dicens : Domine, miserere filio meo, quia lunaticus est, et male patitur : nam sæpe cadit in ignem, et crebro in aquam.14 As they were rejoining the crowd a man came up to him and went down on his knees before him.
Et obtuli eum discipulis tuis, et non potuerunt curare eum.15 'Lord,' he said, 'take pity on my son: he is demented and in a wretched state; he is always fal ing intofire and into water.
Respondens autem Jesus, ait : O generatio incredula, et perversa, quousque ero vobiscum ? usquequo patiar vos ? Afferte huc illum ad me.16 I took him to your disciples and they were unable to cure him.'
Et increpavit illum Jesus, et exiit ab eo dæmonium, et curatus est puer ex illa hora.17 In reply, Jesus said, 'Faithless and perverse generation! How much longer must I be with you? Howmuch longer must I put up with you? Bring him here to me.'
Tunc accesserunt discipuli ad Jesum secreto, et dixerunt : Quare nos non potuimus ejicere illum ?18 And when Jesus rebuked it the devil came out of the boy, who was cured from that moment.
Dixit illis Jesus : Propter incredulitatem vestram. Amen quippe dico vobis, si habueritis fidem sicut granum sinapis, dicetis monti huic : Transi hinc illuc, et transibit, et nihil impossibile erit vobis.19 Then the disciples came privately to Jesus. 'Why were we unable to drive it out?' they asked.
He answered, 'Because you have so little faith. In truth I tel you, if your faith is the size of a mustardseed you wil say to this mountain, "Move from here to there," and it wil move; nothing will be impossible foryou.'
Conversantibus autem eis in Galilæa, dixit illis Jesus : Filius hominis tradendus est in manus hominum :21
et occident eum, et tertia die resurget. Et contristati sunt vehementer.
When they were together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, 'The Son of man is going to be delivered intothe power of men;
Et cum venissent Capharnaum, accesserunt qui didrachma accipiebant ad Petrum, et dixerunt ei : Magister vester non solvit didrachma ?23 they will put him to death, and on the third day he wil be raised up again.' And a great sadness cameover them.
Ait : Etiam. Et cum intrasset in domum, prævenit eum Jesus, dicens : Quid tibi videtur Simon ? reges terræ a quibus accipiunt tributum vel censum ? a filiis suis, an ab alienis ?24 When they reached Capernaum, the col ectors of the half-shekel came to Peter and said, 'Does yourmaster not pay the half-shekel?'
Et ille dixit : Ab alienis. Dixit illi Jesus : Ergo liberi sunt filii.25 'Yes,' he replied, and went into the house. But before he could speak, Jesus said, 'Simon, what isyour opinion? From whom do earthly kings take tol or tribute? From their sons or from foreigners?'
And when he replied, 'From foreigners,' Jesus said, 'Well then, the sons are exempt.
However, so that we shal not be the downfal of others, go to the lake and cast a hook; take the firstfish that rises, open its mouth and there you wil find a shekel; take it and give it to them for me and for yourself.'
