VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Filii autem Ruben et Gad habebant pecora multa, et erat illis in jumentis infinita substantia. Cumque vidissent Jazer et Galaad aptas animalibus alendis terras,1 Now, the Reubenites and Gadites owned very large herds of cattle. Having seen that the territories ofJazer and Gilead formed an ideal region for raising stock,
venerunt ad Moysen, et ad Elezarum sacerdotem, et principes multitudinis, atque dixerunt :2 the Gadites and Reubenites went to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the leaders of the community, andsaid to them,
Ataroth, et Dibon, et Jazer, et Nemra, Hesebon, et Eleale, et Saban, et Nebo, et Beon,3 'The territory of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon,
terra, quam percussit Dominus in conspectu filiorum Israël, regio uberrima est ad pastum animalium : et nos servi tui habemus jumenta plurima,4 which Yahweh has conquered before the advancing community of Israel, is ideal land for raisingstock, and your servants are cattle breeders.
precamurque si invenimus gratiam coram te, ut des nobis famulis tuis eam in possessionem, nec facias nos transire Jordanem.5 So', they said, 'if you approve, give your servants this land for us to own; do not make us cross theJordan.'
Quibus respondit Moyses : Numquid fratres vestri ibunt ad pugnam, et vos hic sedebitis ?6 Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, 'Do you intend your brothers to go into battle while youstay here?
cur subvertitis mentes filiorum Israël, ne transire audeant in locum, quem eis daturus est Dominus ?7 Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing to the country which Yahweh has given them?
Nonne ita egerunt patres vestri, quando misi de Cadesbarne ad explorandam terram ?8 Your fathers behaved in the same way when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to see the country,
cumque venissent usque ad Vallem botri, lustrata omni regione, subverterunt cor filiorum Israël, ut non intrarent fines, quos eis Dominus dedit.9 for, having gone as far as the Val ey of Eshcol and seen the country, they discouraged the Israelitesfrom entering the country which Yahweh had given them.
Qui iratus juravit, dicens :10 Hence Yahweh's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath,
Si videbunt homines isti, qui ascenderunt ex Ægypto a viginti annis et supra, terram, quam sub juramento pollicitus sum Abraham, Isaac, et Jacob : et noluerunt sequi me,11 "No man of twenty years and over, who left Egypt, shal set eyes on the country which I promised onoath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob . . . , for they have not fol owed me absolutely,
præter Caleb filium Jephone Cenezæum, et Josue filium Nun : isti impleverunt voluntatem meam.12 except for Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua son of Nun: these indeed havefol owed Yahweh absolutely."
Iratusque Dominus adversum Israël, circumduxit eum per desertum quadraginta annis, donec consumeretur universa generatio, quæ fecerat malum in conspectu ejus.13 Yahweh's anger being aroused by Israel, he made them wander in the desert for forty years, untilthe generation that offended Yahweh had all disappeared.
Et ecce, inquit, vos surrexistis pro patribus vestris, incrementa et alumni hominum peccatorum, ut augeretis furorem Domini contra Israël.14 And now you rise up in your father's place, offshoot of sinful stock, to increase Yahweh's burninganger with Israel even more!
Quod si nolueritis sequi eum, in solitudine populum derelinquet, et vos causa eritis necis omnium.15 If you turn away from him, he wil prolong the time spent in the desert, and you wil bring about thisentire people's ruin.'
At illi prope accedentes, dixerunt : Caulas ovium fabricabimus, et stabula jumentorum, parvulis quoque nostris urbes munitas :16 They came to Moses and said, 'We should like to build sheepfolds here for our flocks and towns forour little ones.
nos autem ipsi armati et accincti pergemus ad prælium ante filios Israël, donec introducamus eos ad loca sua. Parvuli nostri, et quidquid habere possumus, erunt in urbibus muratis, propter habitatorum insidias.17 We ourselves wil take up arms and lead the Israelites until we have brought them to the placeappointed for them, while our little ones stay in the fortified towns to be safe from the local inhabitants.
Non revertemur in domos nostras, usque dum possideant filii Israël hæreditatem suam :18 We wil not return to our homes until every one of the Israelites has taken possession of his heritage.
nec quidquam quæremus trans Jordanem, quia jam habemus nostram possessionem in orientali ejus plaga.
For we shall have no heritage with them on the other bank of the Jordan or beyond, since ourheritage has fal en to us here, east of the Jordan.'
Quibus Moyses ait : Si facitis quod promittitis, expediti pergite coram Domino ad pugnam :20 Moses said to them, 'If you do as you have said, if you are prepared to fight before Yahweh,
et omnis vir bellator armatus Jordanem transeat, donec subvertat Dominus inimicos suos,21 and if al those of you who bear arms cross the Jordan before Yahweh, until he has driven all hisenemies out before him,
et subjiciatur ei omnis terra : tunc eritis inculpabiles apud Dominum et apud Israël, et obtinebitis regiones, quas vultis, coram Domino.22 then, once the country has become subject to Yahweh, you may go back, and will have dischargedyour obligation to Yahweh and Israel, and Yahweh wil consider this territory yours.
Sin autem quod dicitis, non feceritis, nulli dubium est quin peccetis in Deum : et scitote quoniam peccatum vestrum apprehendet vos.23 But if you do not, you wil sin against Yahweh, and be sure your sin wil find you out.
Ædificate ergo urbes parvulis vestris, et caulas, et stabula ovibus ac jumentis : et quod polliciti estis, implete.24 Build towns, then, for your little ones and folds for your flocks; but do what you have promised.'
Dixeruntque filii Gad et Ruben ad Moysen : Servi tui sumus : faciemus quod jubet dominus noster.25 The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, 'Your servants will do as my lord directs.
Parvulos nostros, et mulieres, et pecora, ac jumenta relinquemus in urbibus Galaad :26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks and al our livestock wil stay in the towns of Gilead,
nos autem famuli tui omnes expediti pergemus ad bellum, sicut tu, domine, loqueris.27 but your servants, each armed for war, will cross in Yahweh's name and fight, as my lord says.'
Præcepit ergo Moyses Eleazaro sacerdoti, et Josue filio Nun, et principibus familiarum per tribus Israël, et dixit ad eos :28 So Moses gave orders about them to the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads offamilies in the Israelite tribes.
Si transierint filii Gad et filii Ruben vobiscum Jordanem omnes armati ad bellum coram Domino, et vobis fuerit terra subjecta, date eis Galaad in possessionem.29 Moses said to them, 'If the Gadites and Reubenites, al those under arms, cross the Jordan with youto fight in Yahweh's name, then, once the country has become subject to you, you wil give them the territory ofGilead as theirs.
Sin autem noluerint transire armati vobiscum in terram Chanaan, inter vos habitandi accipiant loca.30 But if they will not cross with you under arms, they wil receive their domains in Canaan with the restof you.'
Responderuntque filii Gad et filii Ruben : Sicut locutus est Dominus servis suis, ita faciemus :31 To this, the Gadites and Reubenites replied, 'What Yahweh has said to your servants, we shal do.
ipsi armati pergemus coram Domino in terram Chanaan, et possessionem jam suscepisse nos confitemur trans Jordanem.
Under arms, we shall cross in Yahweh's name into Canaan, so that ownership of our heritage onthis side of the Jordan will be ours.'
Dedit itaque Moyses filiis Gad et Ruben, et dimidiæ tribui Manasse filii Joseph, regnum Sehon regis Amorrhæi, et regnum Og regis Basan, et terram eorum cum urbibus suis per circuitum.33 Moses then gave them -- the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph-- the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the country and the townswithin its territory, and the country's frontier-towns.
Igitur exstruxerunt filii Gad, Dibon, et Ataroth, et Aroër,34 The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
et Etroth, et Sophan, et Jazer, et Jegbaa,35 Atroth-Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
et Bethnemra, et Betharan, urbes munitas, et caulas pecoribus suis.36 Beth-Nimrah and Beth-Haran as fortified towns with folds for the flocks.
Filii vero Ruben ædificaverunt Hesebon, et Eleale, et Cariathaim,37 The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
et Nabo, et Baalmeon versis nominibus, Sabama quoque : imponentes vocabula urbibus, quas exstruxerunt.38 Nebo and Baal-Meon (the names of which were altered), and Sibmah, giving new names to thetowns which they rebuilt.
Porro filii Machir filii Manasse, perrexerunt in Galaad, et vastaverunt eam interfecto Amorrhæo habitatore ejus.39 The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead. They conquered it and drove out theAmorites who were there.
Dedit ergo Moyses terram Galaad Machir filio Manasse, qui habitavit in ea.40 Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he settled there.
Jair autem filius Manasse abiit, et occupavit vicos ejus, quos appellavit Havoth Jair, id est, Villas Jair.41 Jair son of Manasseh went and seized their encampments, renaming them the Encampments ofJair.
Nobe quoque perrexit, et apprehendit Chanath cum viculis suis : vocavitque eam ex nomine suo Nobe.42 Nobah went and seized Kenat with its dependent townships, and cal ed it Nobah after himself.
