VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Ego Nabuchodonosor quietus eram in domo mea, et florens in palatio meo :1 'I, Nebuchadnezzar, was living comfortably in my house, prosperously in my palace.
somnium vidi, quod perterruit me : et cogitationes meæ in strato meo, et visiones capitis mei conturbaverunt me.2 I had a dream; it appal ed me. Dread assailed me as I lay in bed; the visions that passed through myhead tormented me.
Et per me propositum est decretum ut introducerentur in conspectu meo cuncti sapientes Babylonis, et ut solutionem somnii indicarent mihi.3 So I decreed that all the sages of Babylon be summoned to explain to me what the dream meant.
Tunc ingrediebantur arioli, magi, Chaldæi, et aruspices, et somnium narravi in conspectu eorum : et solutionem ejus non indicaverunt mihi,4 Magicians, soothsayers, Chaldaeans and exorcists came, and I told them what I had dreamt, but theycould not interpret it for me.
donec collega ingressus est in conspectu meo Daniel, cui nomen Baltassar secundum nomen dei mei, qui habet spiritum deorum sanctorum in semetipso : et somnium coram ipso locutus sum.5 Daniel, renamed Belteshazzar after my own god, and in whom the spirit of the holy gods resides, thencame into my presence. I told him my dream:
Baltassar, princeps ariolorum, quoniam ego scio quod spiritum sanctorum deorum habeas in te, et omne sacramentum non est impossibile tibi : visiones somniorum meorum, quas vidi, et solutionem earum narra.6 ' "Belteshazzar, chief of magicians," I said, "I know that the spirit of the holy gods resides in you and that no mystery puts you at a loss. This is the dream I have had; tel me what it means.
Visio capitis mei in cubili meo : videbam, et ecce arbor in medio terræ, et altitudo ejus nimia.7 ' "The visions that passed through my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw a tree in the middle of theworld; it was very tal .
Magna arbor, et fortis, et proceritas ejus contingens cælum : aspectus illius erat usque ad terminos universæ terræ.8 The tree grew tal er and stronger, until its top reached the sky and it could be seen from the very endsof the earth.
Folia ejus pulcherrima, et fructus ejus nimius : et esca universorum in ea. Subter eam habitabant animalia et bestiæ, et in ramis ejus conversabantur volucres cæli : et ex ea vescebatur omnis caro.9 Its foliage was beautiful, its fruit abundant, in it was food for al . For the wild animals it provided shade, the birds of heaven nested in its branches, al living creatures found their food on it.
Videbam in visione capitis mei super stratum meum, et ecce vigil, et sanctus, de cælo descendit.10 ' "I watched the visions passing through my head as I lay in bed: Next, a Watchful One, a holy one, came down from heaven.
Clamavit fortiter, et sic ait : Succidite arborem, et præcidite ramos ejus : excutite folia ejus, et dispergite fructus ejus : fugiant bestiæ, quæ subter eam sunt, et volucres de ramis ejus.11 At the top of his voice he shouted: Cut the tree down, lop off its branches, strip off its leaves, throwaway its fruit; let the animals flee from its shelter and the birds from its branches.
Verumtamen germen radicum ejus in terra sinite, et alligetur vinculo ferreo et æreo in herbis quæ foris sunt, et rore cæli tingatur, et cum feris pars ejus in herba terræ.12 But leave the stump with its roots in the ground, bound with hoops of iron and bronze, in the grass ofthe countryside. Let it be drenched by the dew of heaven and have its lot with the animals, eating grass!
Cor ejus ab humano commutetur, et cor feræ detur ei : et septem tempora mutentur super eum.13 Let it cease to have a human heart, and be given the heart of a beast, and seven times shal passover him!
In sententia vigilum decretum est, et sermo sanctorum, et petitio : donec cognoscant viventes quoniam dominatur Excelsus in regno hominum, et cuicumque voluerit, dabit illud, et humillimum hominem constituet super eum.14 Such is the sentence proclaimed by the Watchers, the verdict announced by the holy ones- so thatevery living thing may learn that the Most High rules over human sovereignty; he confers it on whom he pleases, and raises the lowest of humankind.
Hoc somnium vidi ego Nabuchodonosor rex : tu ergo Baltassar interpretationem narra festinus, quia omnes sapientes regni mei non queunt solutionem edicere mihi : tu autem potes, quia spiritus deorum sanctorum in te est.15 ' "This was the dream I had-I, Nebuchadnezzar the king. Now it is for you, Belteshazzar, to pronounceon its meaning, since not one of the sages in my kingdom has been able to interpret it for me; you, however, cando so, since the spirit of the holy gods resides in you." '
Respondit Baltassar, et dixit : Domine mi, somnium his, qui te oderunt, et interpretatio ejus hostibus tuis sit.16 Daniel, known as Belteshazzar, was confused for a time and upset. The king said, 'Belteshazzar, donot be upset at the dream and its meaning.' Belteshazzar answered, 'My lord, may the dream apply to those whohate you, and its meaning to your foes!
Arborem, quam vidisti sublimem atque robustam, cujus altitudo pertingit ad cælum, et aspectus illius in omnem terram ;17 The tree you saw, so large and strong and tal that it reached the sky and could be seen throughoutthe world,
et rami ejus pulcherrimi, et fructus ejus nimius, et esca omnium in ea, subter eam habitantes bestiæ agri, et in ramis ejus commorantes aves cæli :18 the tree with beautiful foliage and abundant fruit, with food for al in it, providing shade for the wildanimals, with the birds of heaven nesting in its branches:
tu es rex, qui magnificatus es, et invaluisti : et magnitudo tua crevit, et pervenit usque ad cælum, et potestas tua in terminos universæ terræ.19 that tree is yourself, Your Majesty, for you have grown great and strong; your stature is now so greatthat it reaches the sky, and your empire extends to the ends of the earth.
Quod autem vidit rex vigilem, et sanctum descendere de cælo, et dicere : Succidite arborem, et dissipate illam, attamen germen radicum ejus in terra dimittite, et vinciatur ferro et ære in herbis foris, et rore cæli conspergatur, et cum feris sit pabulum ejus, donec septem tempora mutentur super eum :20 'And the Watchful One seen by the king, the holy one coming down from heaven and saying, "Cut thetree down and destroy it, but leave stump and roots in the ground, bound with hoops of iron and bronze in thegrass of the countryside; let it be drenched by the dew and have its lot with the wild animals until seven timeshave passed over it":
hæc est interpretatio sententiæ Altissimi, quæ pervenit super dominum meum regem,21 the meaning of this, Your Majesty, the verdict of the Most High passed on my lord the king, is this:
Ejicient te ab hominibus, et cum bestiis ferisque erit habitatio tua, et fœnum ut bos comedes, et rore cæli infunderis : septem quoque tempora mutabuntur super te, donec scias quod dominetur Excelsus super regnum hominum, et cuicumque voluerit, det illud.22 You wil be driven from human society and wil make your home with the wild animals, you will feed ongrass, as oxen do, you wil be drenched by the dew of heaven; seven times will pass over you until you havelearnt that the Most High rules over human sovereignty and confers it on whom he pleases.
Quod autem præcepit ut relinqueretur germen radicum ejus, id est arboris : regnum tuum tibi manebit postquam cognoveris potestatem esse cælestem.23 'And the order, "Leave the stump and roots of the tree", means that your kingdom wil be kept for youuntil you come to understand that Heaven rules all.
Quam ob rem, rex, consilium meum placeat tibi, et peccata tua eleemosynis redime, et iniquitates tuas misericordiis pauperum : forsitan ignoscet delictis tuis.
May it please the king to accept my advice: by upright actions break with your sins, break with yourcrimes by showing mercy to the poor, and so live long and peacefully.'
Omnia hæc venerunt super Nabuchodonosor regem.25 This al happened to King Nebuchadnezzar.
Post finem mensium duodecim, in aula Babylonis deambulabat.26 At the end of twelve months, while strol ing on the roof of the royal palace in Babylon,
Responditque rex, et ait : Nonne hæc est Babylon magna, quam ego ædificavi in domum regni, in robore fortitudinis meæ, et in gloria decoris mei ?27 the king was saying, 'Great Babylon! Was it not built by me as a royal residence, by the force of mymight and for the majesty of my glory?'
Cumque sermo adhuc esset in ore regis, vox de cælo ruit : Tibi dicitur, Nabuchodonosor rex : Regnum tuum transibit a te,28 The words were not out of his mouth when a voice came down from heaven: 'Of you, KingNebuchadnezzar, it is decreed: the empire has been taken from you,
et ab hominibus ejicient te, et cum bestiis et feris erit habitatio tua : fœnum quasi bos comedes, et septem tempora mutabuntur super te, donec scias quod dominetur Excelsus in regno hominum, et cuicumque voluerit, det illud.29 you wil be driven from human society and wil make your home with the wild animals; you wil feed ongrass, as oxen do, and seven times wil pass over you until you have learnt that the Most High rules over humansovereignty and gives it to whom he pleases.'
The words were immediately fulfilled: Nebuchadnezzar was driven from human society and ate grassas oxen do; he was drenched by the dew of heaven; his hair grew like an eagle's feathers, and his nails becamelike a bird's talons.
Igitur post finem dierum, ego Nabuchodonosor oculos meos ad cælum levavi, et sensus meus redditus est mihi : et Altissimo benedixi, et viventem in sempiternum laudavi et glorificavi : quia potestas ejus potestas sempiterna, et regnum ejus in generationem et generationem.31 'When the time was over, I, Nebuchad- nezzar, raised my eyes to heaven: my reason returned. And Iblessed the Most High, praising and glorifying him who lives for ever, for his empire is an everlasting empire, hiskingship endures, age after age.
Et omnes habitatores terræ apud eum in nihilum reputati sunt : juxta voluntatem enim suam facit tam in virtutibus cæli quam in habitatoribus terræ : et non est qui resistat manui ejus, et dicat ei : Quare fecisti ?32 Al who dwel on earth count for nothing; as he thinks fit, he disposes the army of heaven and thosewho dwel on earth. No one can arrest his hand or ask him, "What have you done?"
In ipso tempore sensus meus reversus est ad me, et ad honorem regni mei, decoremque perveni : et figura mea reversa est ad me, et optimates mei et magistratus mei requisierunt me, et in regno meo restitutus sum : et magnificentia amplior addita est mihi.33 'At that moment my reason returned and, for the honour of my royal state, my glory and splendourreturned too. My counsel ors and noblemen acclaimed me; I was restored to my throne, and to my pastgreatness even more was added.
Nunc igitur, ego Nabuchodonosor laudo, et magnifico, et glorifico regem cæli : quia omnia opera ejus vera, et viæ ejus judicia, et gradientes in superbia potest humiliare.34 And now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, extol and glorify the King of heaven, al of whose deeds are true,al of whose ways are right, and who can humble those who walk in pride.'
