VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Et factum est in anno quarto Joakim filii Josiæ regis Juda, factum est verbum hoc ad Jeremiam a Domino, dicens :1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh,
Tolle volumen libri, et scribes in eo omnia verba quæ locutus sum tibi adversum Israël et Judam, et adversum omnes gentes, a die qua locutus sum ad te ex diebus Josiæ usque ad diem hanc :2 'Take a scroll and on it write al the words I have spoken to you about Israel, Judah and al the nations,from the day I first spoke to you, in the time of Josiah, until today.
si forte, audiente domo Juda universa mala quæ ego cogito facere eis, revertatur unusquisque a via sua pessima, et propitius ero iniquitati et peccato eorum.3 Perhaps when the House of Judah hears about al the disaster I intend to inflict on them, they will turn,each one of them, from their evil behaviour, so that I can forgive their sinful guilt.'
Vocavit ergo Jeremias Baruch filium Neriæ : et scripsit Baruch ex ore Jeremiæ omnes sermones Domini quos locutus est ad eum, in volumine libri :4 Jeremiah then summoned Baruch son of Neriah, who at his dictation wrote down on the scrol all thewords Yahweh had spoken to him.
et præcepit Jeremias Baruch, dicens : Ego clausus sum, nec valeo ingredi domum Domini.5 Jeremiah then gave Baruch this order, 'As I am prevented from entering the Temple of Yahweh,
Ingredere ergo tu, et lege de volumine in quo scripsisti ex ore meo verba Domini, audiente populo in domo Domini, in die jejunii : insuper et audiente universo Juda qui veniunt de civitatibus suis, leges eis,6 you yourself must go and, from the scrol you wrote at my dictation, read all Yahweh's words to thepeople in his Temple on the day of the fast, and in this way you can read them in the hearing also of all theJudaeans who come in from their towns.
si forte cadat oratio eorum in conspectu Domini, et revertatur unusquisque a via sua pessima : quoniam magnus furor et indignatio est quam locutus est Dominus adversus populum hunc.7 Perhaps their prayers wil move Yahweh and they wil turn one and al from their evil behaviour, forgreat is the furious anger with which Yahweh has threatened this people.'
Et fecit Baruch filius Neriæ juxta omnia quæ præceperat ei Jeremias propheta, legens ex volumine sermones Domini in domo Domini.8 Baruch son of Neriah duly carried out the order that the prophet Jeremiah had given him, to read alYahweh's words from the book in his Temple.
Factum est autem in anno quinto Joakim filii Josiæ regis Juda, in mense nono : prædicaverunt jejunium in conspectu Domini omni populo in Jerusalem, et universæ multitudini quæ confluxerat de civitatibus Juda in Jerusalem.9 Now, in the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, al the people ofJerusalem and all the people who could get to Jerusalem from the towns of Judah were summoned to a fastbefore Yahweh.
Legitque Baruch ex volumine sermones Jeremiæ in domo Domini, in gazophylacio Gamariæ filii Saphan scribæ, in vestibulo superiori, in introitu portæ novæ domus Domini, audiente omni populo.10 Baruch then read Jeremiah's words from the book; this happened in the room of Gemariah son of thescribe Shaphan, in the upper court at the entry of the New Gate of the Temple of Yahweh, where all the peoplecould hear.
Cumque audisset Michæas filius Gamariæ filii Saphan omnes sermones Domini ex libro,11 Micaiah son of Gemariah, son of Shaphan, having heard all Yahweh's words read from the book,
descendit in domum regis, ad gazophylacium scribæ, et ecce ibi omnes principes sedebant : Elisama scriba, et Dalaias filius Semeiæ, et Elnathan filius Achobor, et Gamarias filius Saphan, et Sedecias filius Hananiæ, et universi principes :12 went down to the royal palace, to the scribe's room. Al the chief men were in session: the scribeElishama, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son ofHananiah and al the other chief men;
et nuntiavit eis Michæas omnia verba quæ audivit, legente Baruch ex volumine in auribus populi.13 and to them Micaiah reported al the words he heard as Baruch was reading the book aloud to thepeople.
Miserunt itaque omnes principes ad Baruch Judi filium Nathaniæ filii Selemiæ filii Chusi, dicentes : Volumen ex quo legisti, audiente populo, sume in manu tua, et veni. Tulit ergo Baruch filius Neriæ volumen in manu sua, et venit ad eos :14 The chief men then by common consent sent Jehudi son of Netaniah to Baruch, with Shelemiah sonof Cushi, to say, 'Come, and bring the scrol with you which you have been reading to the people.'
et dixerunt ad eum : Sede, et lege hæc in auribus nostris. Et legit Baruch in auribus eorum.15 Bringing the scrol with him, Baruch son of Neriah appeared before them. 'Sit down,' they said, 'andread it out.' So Baruch read it to them.
Igitur cum audissent omnia verba, obstupuerunt unusquisque ad proximum suum, et dixerunt ad Baruch : Nuntiare debemus regi omnes sermones istos.16 Having heard al the words they turned to one another in alarm and said to Baruch, 'We must certainlyinform the king of this.'
Et interrogaverunt eum, dicentes : Indica nobis quomodo scripsisti omnes sermones istos ex ore ejus.17 They then questioned Baruch, 'Tel us', they said, 'how you came to write al these words.'
Dixit autem eis Baruch : Ex ore suo loquebatur quasi legens ad me omnes sermones istos, et ego scribebam in volumine atramento.18 'Jeremiah dictated them al to me,' Baruch replied, 'and I wrote them down in ink in this book.'
Et dixerunt principes ad Baruch : Vade, et abscondere, tu et Jeremias, et nemo sciat ubi sitis.19 The chief men said to Baruch, 'You and Jeremiah had better go into hiding; and do not tel anyonewhere you are.'
Et ingressi sunt ad regem in atrium : porro volumen commendaverunt in gazophylacio Elisamæ scribæ, et nuntiaverunt, audiente rege, omnes sermones.20 Whereupon they went off to the king in the palace court, depositing the scrol in the room of the scribeElishama. They then informed the king of the whole affair.
Misitque rex Judi ut sumeret volumen : qui tollens illud de gazophylacio Elisamæ scribæ, legit, audiente rege et universis principibus qui stabant circa regem.21 The king sent Jehudi for the scrol , and he brought it from the room of the scribe Elishama and read itto the king and all the chief men standing round the king.
Rex autem sedebat in domo hiemali, in mense nono, et posita erat arula coram eo plena prunis.22 The king was sitting in his winter apartments -- it was the ninth month -- with a fire burning in a brazierin front of him.
Cumque legisset Judi tres pagellas vel quatuor, scidit illud scalpello scribæ, et projecit in ignem qui erat super arulam, donec consumeretur omne volumen igni qui erat in arula.23 Each time Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut them off with a scribe's knife and threwthem into the fire in the brazier until the whole of the scrol had been burnt in the brazier fire.
Et non timuerunt, neque sciderunt vestimenta sua, rex et omnes servi ejus qui audierunt universos sermones istos.24 But in spite of hearing al these words, neither the king nor any of his courtiers took alarm or tore theirclothes;
Verumtamen Elnathan, et Dalaias, et Gamarias, contradixerunt regi, ne combureret librum : et non audivit eos.25 and although Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had urged the king not to burn the scrol he wouldnot listen to them,
Et præcepit rex Jeremiel filio Amelech, et Saraiæ filio Ezriel, et Selemiæ filio Abdeel, ut comprehenderent Baruch scribam, et Jeremiam prophetam : abscondit autem eos Dominus.
but ordered the king's son Jerahmeel and Seraiah son of Azriel and Shelemiah son of Abdeel toarrest the scribe Baruch and the prophet Jeremiah. But Yahweh had hidden them.
Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam prophetam, postquam combusserat rex volumen et sermones quos scripserat Baruch ex ore Jeremiæ, dicens :27 Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, after the king had burnt the scrol containing the wordsBaruch had written at Jeremiah's dictation,
Rursum tolle volumen aliud, et scribe in eo omnes sermones priores qui erant in primo volumine, quod combussit Joakim rex Juda.28 'Take another scroll and write down all the words that were written on the first scrol burnt byJehoiakim king of Judah.
Et ad Joakim regem Juda dices : Hæc dicit Dominus : Tu combussisti volumen illud, dicens : Quare scripsisti in eo annuntians : Festinus veniet rex Babylonis, et vastabit terram hanc, et cessare faciet ex illa hominem et jumentum ?29 And as regards Jehoiakim king of Judah, you are to say, "Yahweh says this: You have burnt thatscrol , saying: Why have you written down: The king of Babylon will certainly come and lay this country wasteand leave it without human or animal?
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus contra Joakim regem Juda : Non erit ex eo qui sedeat super solium David : et cadaver ejus projicietur ad æstum per diem, et ad gelu per noctem.30 So, this is what Yahweh says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: He wil have no one to occupy thethrone of David, and his corpse wil be tossed out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night.
Et visitabo contra eum, et contra semen ejus, et contra servos ejus, iniquitates suas : et adducam super eos, et super habitatores Jerusalem, et super viros Juda, omne malum quod locutus sum ad eos, et non audierunt.31 I shal punish him, his offspring and his courtiers for their guilt; on them, on the citizens of Jerusalemand on the people of Judah I shal bring the total disaster which I had decreed for them but to which they havepaid no attention."
Jeremias autem tulit volumen aliud, et dedit illud Baruch filio Neriæ scribæ : qui scripsit in eo ex ore Jeremiæ omnes sermones libri quem combusserat Joakim rex Juda igni : et insuper additi sunt sermones multo plures quam antea fuerant.32 Jeremiah then took another scrol and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, who in it atJeremiah's dictation wrote all the words of the book that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burnt, with many similarwords in addition.
