VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
In principio regni Joakim filii Josiæ regis Juda, factum est verbum istud a Domino, dicens :1 At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiahfrom Yahweh,
Hæc dicit Dominus : Sta in atrio domus Domini, et loqueris ad omnes civitates Juda, de quibus veniunt ut adorent in domo Domini universos sermones quos ego mandavi tibi ut loquaris ad eos : noli subtrahere verbum,2 'Yahweh says this, "Stand in the court of the Temple of Yahweh. To al the people from the towns ofJudah who come to worship in the Temple of Yahweh you wil say everything I have ordered you to say, notomitting one syllable.
si forte audiant, et convertantur unusquisque a via sua mala, et pœniteat me mali quod cogito facere eis propter malitiam studiorum eorum.3 Perhaps they wil listen and each turn from his evil way: if so, I shal relent and not bring the disaster onthem which I intend because of their misdeeds."
Et dices ad eos : Hæc dicit Dominus : Si non audieritis me, ut ambuletis in lege mea quam dedi vobis,4 Say to them, "Yahweh says this: If you will not listen to me and fol ow my Law which I have given you,
ut audiatis sermones servorum meorum prophetarum quos ego misi ad vos, de nocte consurgens, et dirigens, et non audistis :5 and pay attention to the words of my servants the prophets whom I have never tired of sending to you, although you never have paid attention,
dabo domum istam sicut Silo, et urbem hanc dabo in maledictionem cunctis gentibus terræ.6 I shal treat this Temple as I treated Shiloh, and make this city a curse for al the nations of the world." '
Et audierunt sacerdotes, et prophetæ, et omnis populus, Jeremiam loquentem verba hæc in domo Domini.7 The priests and prophets and al the people heard Jeremiah say these words in the Temple of Yahweh.
Cumque complesset Jeremias, loquens omnia quæ præceperat ei Dominus ut loqueretur ad universum populum, apprehenderunt eum sacerdotes, et prophetæ, et omnis populus, dicens : Morte moriatur.8 When Jeremiah had finished saying everything that Yahweh had ordered him to say to al the people, the priests and prophets and al the people seized hold of him and said, 'You will die for this!
Quare prophetavit in nomine Domini, dicens : Sicut Silo erit domus hæc, et urbs ista desolabitur eo quod non sit habitator ? Et congregatus est omnis populus adversus Jeremiam in domo Domini.9 Why have you made this prophecy in Yahweh's name, "This Temple will become like Shiloh, and thiscity become an uninhabited ruin"?' And the people all crowded in on Jeremiah in the Temple of Yahweh.
Et audierunt principes Juda verba hæc, et ascenderunt de domo regis in domum Domini, et sederunt in introitu portæ domus Domini novæ.10 Hearing of this, the chief men of Judah came up from the royal palace to the Temple of Yahweh andtook their seats at the entry of the New Gate of the Temple of Yahweh.
Et locuti sunt sacerdotes et prophetæ ad principes, et ad omnem populum, dicentes : Judicium mortis est viro huic, quia prophetavit adversus civitatem istam, sicut audistis auribus vestris.11 The priests and prophets then said to the chief men and all the people, 'This man deserves to die, since he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.'
Et ait Jeremias ad omnes principes, et ad universum populum, dicens : Dominus misit me ut prophetarem ad domum istam, et ad civitatem hanc, omnia verba quæ audistis.12 Jeremiah, however, replied to all the chief men and all the people as fol ows, 'Yahweh himself sentme to prophesy against this Temple and this city al the things you have heard.
Nunc ergo bonas facite vias vestras et studia vestra, et audite vocem Domini Dei vestri, et pœnitebit Dominum mali quod locutus est adversum vos.13 So now amend your behaviour and actions, listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, and Yahweh wilrelent about the disaster that he has decreed for you.
Ego autem ecce in manibus vestris sum : facite mihi quod bonum et rectum est in oculis vestris.14 For myself, I am, as you see, in your hands. Do whatever you please or think right with me.
Verumtamen scitote et cognoscite quod, si occideritis me, sanguinem innocentem tradetis contra vosmetipsos, et contra civitatem istam, et habitatores ejus : in veritate enim misit me Dominus ad vos, ut loquerer in auribus vestris omnia verba hæc.15 But be sure of this, that if you put me to death, you wil be bringing innocent blood on yourselves, onthis city and on its inhabitants, since Yahweh has truly sent me to you to say al this for you to hear.'
Et dixerunt principes et omnis populus ad sacerdotes et ad prophetas : Non est viro huic judicium mortis, quia in nomine Domini Dei nostri locutus est ad nos.16 The chief men and al the people then said to the priests and prophets, 'This man does not deserve todie: he has spoken to us in the name of Yahweh our God.'
Surrexerunt ergo viri de senioribus terræ, et dixerunt ad omnem cœtum populi, loquentes :17 And some of the country's elders rose to address al the assembled people.
Michæas de Morasthi fuit propheta in diebus Ezechiæ regis Juda, et ait ad omnem populum Juda, dicens : Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum :
Sion quasi ager arabitur,
et Jerusalem in acervum lapidum erit,
et mons domus in excelsa silvarum.
'Micah of Moresheth,' they said, 'who prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, had this tosay to all the people of Judah, "Yahweh Sabaoth says this: Zion wil become ploughland, Jerusalem a heap ofrubble and the Temple Mount a wooded height."
Numquid morte condemnavit eum Ezechias rex Juda, et omnis Juda ? numquid non timuerunt Dominum, et deprecati sunt faciem Domini, et pœnituit Dominum mali quod locutus fuerat adversum eos ? Itaque nos facimus malum grande contra animas nostras.19 'Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death for this? Did they not rather, fearingYahweh, plead with him, to such effect that Yahweh relented about the disaster which he had decreed for them? Are we now to burden our souls with such a crime?'
Fuit quoque vir prophetans in nomine Domini, Urias filius Semei de Cariathiarim, et prophetavit adversus civitatem istam, et adversus terram hanc, juxta omnia verba Jeremiæ.20 There was another man, too, who used to prophesy in Yahweh's name, Uriah son of Shemaiah, fromKiriath-Jearim. He prophesied exactly the same things against this city and this country as Jeremiah.
Et audivit rex Joakim, et omnes potentes et principes ejus, verba hæc, et quæsivit rex interficere eum : et audivit Urias, et timuit, fugitque, et ingressus est Ægyptum.21 When King Jehoiakim with all his officers and all the chief men heard what he said, the king wasdetermined to put him to death. On hearing this, Uriah took fright and, fleeing, escaped to Egypt.
Et misit rex Joakim viros in Ægyptum, Elnathan filium Achobor, et viros cum eo, in Ægyptum,22 King Jehoiakim, however, sent Elnathan son of Achbor to Egypt with others,
et eduxerunt Uriam de Ægypto, et adduxerunt eum ad regem Joakim, et percussit eum gladio, et projecit cadaver ejus in sepulchris vulgi ignobilis.23 who brought Uriah back from Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him put to the swordand his body thrown into the common burial ground.
Igitur manus Ahicam filii Saphan fuit cum Jeremia, ut non traderetur in manus populi, et interficerent eum.24 But Jeremiah had a protector in Ahikam son of Shaphan, so he was not handed over to the people tobe put to death.
