VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Dixit autem Dominus ad Moysen : Ingredere ad Pharaonem, et loquere ad eum : Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Hebræorum : Dimitte populum meum ut sacrificet mihi.1 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go to Pharaoh and say to him, "Yahweh, God of the Hebrews, says this:Let my people go and worship me.
Quod si adhuc renuis, et retines eos,2 If you refuse to let them go and detain them any longer,
ecce manus mea erit super agros tuos, et super equos, et asinos, et camelos, et boves, et oves, pestis valde gravis.3 look, the hand of Yahweh wil strike your livestock in the fields, horses, donkeys, camels, oxen andflocks with a deadly plague.
Et faciet Dominus mirabile inter possessiones Israël et possessiones Ægyptiorum, ut nihil omnino pereat ex eis quæ pertinent ad filios Israël.4 Yahweh wil discriminate between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt: nothing of whatbelongs to the Israelites will die.
Constituitque Dominus tempus, dicens : Cras faciet Dominus verbum istud in terra.5 Yahweh has fixed the time. Tomorrow, he has said, Yahweh will do this in the country." '
Fecit ergo Dominus verbum hoc altera die : mortuaque sunt omnia animantia Ægyptiorum ; de animalibus vero filiorum Israël, nihil omnino periit.6 Next day Yahweh did this: al the Egyptians' livestock died, but nothing of the livestock owned by theIsraelites died.
Et misit Pharao ad videndum : nec erat quidquam mortuum de his quæ possidebat Israël. Ingravatumque est cor Pharaonis, et non dimisit populum.
Pharaoh had enquiries made, and found that of the livestock owned by the Israelites not a single beasthad died. But Pharaoh was obstinate and did not let the people go.
Et dixit Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron : Tollite plenas manus cineris de camino, et spargat illum Moyses in cælum coram Pharaone.8 Yahweh then said to Moses and Aaron, 'Take handfuls of soot from the kiln, and before Pharaoh's eyeslet Moses throw it in the air.
Sitque pulvis super omnem terram Ægypti : erunt enim in hominibus et jumentis ulcera, et vesicæ turgentes in universa terra Ægypti.9 It will turn into fine dust over the whole of Egypt and produce boils breaking into sores on man andbeast throughout the whole of Egypt.'
Tuleruntque cinerem de camino, et steterunt coram Pharaone, et sparsit illum Moyses in cælum : factaque sunt ulcera vesicarum turgentium in hominibus et jumentis :10 So they took soot from the kiln and stood in front of Pharaoh, and Moses threw it in the air, and onman and beast it brought out boils breaking into sores.
nec poterant malefici stare coram Moyse propter ulcera quæ in illis erant, et in omni terra Ægypti.11 And the magicians could not compete with Moses in the matter of the boils, for the magicians werecovered with boils like al the other Egyptians.
Induravitque Dominus cor Pharaonis, et non audivit eos, sicut locutus est Dominus ad Moysen.
But Yahweh made Pharaoh stubborn and, as Yahweh had foretold to Moses, he did not listen to them.
Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen : Mane consurge, et sta coram Pharaone, et dices ad eum : Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Hebræorum : Dimitte populum meum ut sacrificet mihi.13 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Get up early in the morning and confront Pharaoh. Say to him, "Yahweh,God of the Hebrews, says this: Let my people go and worship me.
Quia in hac vice mittam omnes plagas meas super cor tuum, et super servos tuos, et super populum tuum : ut scias quod non sit similis mei in omni terra.14 For this time I am going to inflict al my plagues on you, on your officials and on your subjects, so thatyou wil know that there is no one like me in the whole world.
Nunc enim extendens manum percutiam te, et populum tuum peste, peribisque de terra.15 Had I stretched out my hand to strike you and your subjects with pestilence, you would have beenswept from the earth.
Idcirco autem posui te, ut ostendam in te fortitudinem meam, et narretur nomen meum in omni terra.16 But I have let you survive for this reason: to display my power to you and to have my name talked ofthroughout the world.
Adhuc retines populum meum, et non vis dimittere eum ?17 Since you take a high hand with my people, refusing to let them go,
En pluam cras hac ipsa hora grandinem multam nimis, qualis non fuit in Ægypto a die qua fundata est, usque in præsens tempus.18 very wel , at about this time tomorrow, I shal cause so severe a hail to fal as was never known inEgypt from the day of its foundation until now.
Mitte ergo jam nunc, et congrega jumenta tua, et omnia quæ habes in agro : homines enim, et jumenta, et universa quæ inventa fuerint foris, nec congregata de agris, cecideritque super ea grando, morientur.19 So now send word to have your livestock and everything else you own in the fields put under cover. On man or beast, al that happen to be in the fields and are not brought indoors, the hail will fal and they wildie." '
Qui timuit verbum Domini de servis Pharaonis, facit confugere servos suos et jumenta in domos :20 Those of Pharaoh's officials who respected what Yahweh said, brought their slaves and livestockindoors,
qui autem neglexit sermonem Domini, dimisit servos suos et jumenta in agris.21 but those who did not take to heart what Yahweh said left their slaves and livestock in the fields.
Et dixit Dominus ad Moysen : Extende manum tuam in cælum, ut fiat grando in universa terra Ægypti super homines, et super jumenta, et super omnem herbam agri in terra Ægypti.22 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Stretch out your hand towards heaven so that it hails throughout thewhole of Egypt, on man and beast and on everything growing anywhere in Egypt.'
Extenditque Moyses virgam in cælum, et Dominus dedit tonitrua, et grandinem, ac discurrentia fulgura super terram : pluitque Dominus grandinem super terram Ægypti.23 Moses stretched out his staff towards heaven, and Yahweh thundered and rained down hail. Lightningstruck the earth and Yahweh rained down hail on Egypt.
Et grando et ignis mista pariter ferebantur : tantæque fuit magnitudinis, quanta ante numquam apparuit in universa terra Ægypti ex quo gens illa condita est.24 And so there was hail, and lightning accompanied the hail, very severe, such as had never beenknown anywhere in Egypt since it first became a nation.
Et percussit grando in omni terra Ægypti cuncta quæ fuerunt in agris, ab homine usque ad jumentum : cunctamque herbam agri percussit grando, et omne lignum regionis confregit.25 Al over Egypt the hail struck down everything in the fields, man and beast, and the hail beat downeverything growing in the fields and shattered al the trees in the fields.
Tantum in terra Gessen, ubi erant filii Israël, grando non cecidit.26 The only place where there was no hail was in the Goshen region, where the Israelites lived.
Misitque Pharao, et vocavit Moysen et Aaron, dicens ad eos : Peccavi etiam nunc : Dominus justus ; ego et populus meus, impii.27 Pharaoh then sent for Moses and Aaron and said, 'This time, I have sinned. Yahweh is in the right; Iand my subjects are in the wrong.
Orate Dominum ut desinant tonitrua Dei, et grando : ut dimittam vos, et nequaquam hic ultra maneatis.28 Pray to Yahweh, for we cannot bear any more of this thunder and hail. I promise to let you go. Youneed stay no longer.'
Ait Moyses : Cum egressus fuero de urbe, extendam palmas meas ad Dominum, et cessabunt tonitrua, et grando non erit, ut scias quia Domini est terra :29 Moses said to him, 'The moment I leave the city I shal stretch out my hands to Yahweh. The thunderwil stop, and there wil be no more hail, so that you may know that the earth belongs to Yahweh.
novi autem quod et tu et servi tui necdum timeatis Dominum Deum.30 But as for you and your officials, I know very wel that you stil have no respect for Yahweh God.'
Linum ergo et hordeum læsum est, eo quod hordeum esset virens, et linum jam folliculos germinaret :31 The flax and the barley were ruined, since the barley was in the ear and the flax in bud,
triticum autem et far non sunt læsa, quia serotina erant.32 but the wheat and spelt were not destroyed, being late crops.
Egressusque Moyses a Pharaone ex urbe, tetendit manus ad Dominum : et cessaverunt tonitrua et grando, nec ultra stillavit pluvia super terram.33 Moses left Pharaoh and went out of the city. He stretched out his hands to Yahweh and the thunderand hail ceased and the rain stopped pouring down on the earth.
Videns autem Pharao quod cessasset pluvia, et grando, et tonitrua, auxit peccatum :34 When Pharaoh saw that rain and hail and thunder had stopped, he relapsed into sin,
et ingravatum est cor ejus, et servorum illius, et induratum nimis : nec dimisit filios Israël, sicut præceperat Dominus per manum Moysi.35 and he and his officials became obstinate again. Pharaoh was stubborn and, as Yahweh had foretoldthrough Moses, refused to let the Israelites go.
