VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron in terra Ægypti :1 Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt,
Mensis iste, vobis principium mensium : primus erit in mensibus anni.2 'This month must be the first of al the months for you, the first month of your year.
Loquimini ad universum c?tum filiorum Israël, et dicite eis : Decima die mensis hujus tollat unusquisque agnum per familias et domos suas.3 Speak to the whole community of Israel and say, "On the tenth day of this month each man must takean animal from the flock for his family: one animal for each household.
If the household is too smal for the animal, he must join with his neighbour nearest to his house, depending on the number of persons. When you choose the animal, you wil take into account what each caneat.
Erit autem agnus absque macula, masculus, anniculus : juxta quem ritum tolletis et hædum.5 It must be an animal without blemish, a male one year old; you may choose it either from the sheep orfrom the goats.
Et servabitis eum usque ad quartamdecimam diem mensis hujus : immolabitque eum universa multitudo filiorum Israël ad vesperam.6 You must keep it til the fourteenth day of the month when the whole assembly of the community ofIsrael wil slaughter it at twilight.
Et sument de sanguine ejus, ac ponent super utrumque postem, et in superliminaribus domorum, in quibus comedent illum.7 Some of the blood must then be taken and put on both door-posts and the lintel of the houses where itis eaten.
Et edent carnes nocte illa assas igni, et azymos panes cum lactucis agrestibus.8 That night, the flesh must be eaten, roasted over the fire; it must be eaten with unleavened bread andbitter herbs.
Non comedetis ex eo crudum quid, nec coctum aqua, sed tantum assum igni : caput cum pedibus ejus et intestinis vorabitis.9 Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with the head, feet and entrails.
Nec remanebit quidquam ex eo usque mane ; si quid residuum fuerit, igne comburetis.10 You must not leave any of it over till the morning: whatever is left till morning you must burn.
This is how you must eat it: with a belt round your waist, your sandals on your feet and your staff inyour hand. You must eat it hurriedly: it is a Passover in Yahweh's honour.
Ego Dominus.12 That night, I shal go through Egypt and strike down all the first-born in Egypt, man and beast alike, and shal execute justice on al the gods of Egypt, I, Yahweh!
Erit autem sanguis vobis in signum in ædibus in quibus eritis : et videbo sanguinem, et transibo vos : nec erit in vobis plaga disperdens quando percussero terram Ægypti.13 The blood wil be a sign for you on the houses where you are. When I see the blood I shall pass overyou, and you wil escape the destructive plague when I strike Egypt.
Habebitis autem hunc diem in monimentum : et celebrabitis eam solemnem Domino in generationibus vestris cultu sempiterno.14 This day must be commemorated by you, and you must keep it as a feast in Yahweh's honour. Youmust keep it as a feast-day for al generations; this is a decree for al time.
Septem diebus azyma comedetis : in die primo non erit fermentum in domibus vestris : quicumque comederit fermentatum, peribit anima illa de Israël, a primo die usque ad diem septimum.15 "For seven days you must eat unleavened bread. On the first day you must clean the leaven out ofyour houses, for anyone who eats leavened bread from the first to the seventh day must be outlawed from Israel.
Dies prima erit sancta atque solemnis, et dies septima eadem festivitate venerabilis : nihil operis facietis in eis, exceptis his, quæ ad vescendum pertinent.16 On the first day you must hold a sacred assembly, and on the seventh day a sacred assembly. Onthose days no work may be done; you wil prepare only what each requires to eat.
Et observabitis azyma : in eadem enim ipsa die educam exercitum vestrum de terra Ægypti, et custodietis diem istum in generationes vestras ritu perpetuo.17 You must keep the feast of Unleavened Bread because it was on that same day that I brought yourarmies out of Egypt. You wil keep that day, generation after generation; this is a decree for al time.
Primo mense, quartadecima die mensis ad vesperam, comedetis azyma usque ad diem vigesimam primam ejusdem mensis ad vesperam.18 In the first month, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day, youmust eat unleavened bread.
For seven days there may be no leaven in your houses, since anyone, either stranger or citizen ofthe country, who eats leavened bread wil be outlawed from the community of Israel.
Omne fermentatum non comedetis : in cunctis habitaculis vestris edetis azyma.20 You wil eat nothing with leaven in it; wherever you live, you will eat unleavened bread." '
Vocavit autem Moyses omnes seniores filiorum Israël, et dixit ad eos : Ite tollentes animal per familias vestras, et immolate Phase.21 Moses summoned al the elders of Israel and said to them, 'Go and choose a lamb or kid for yourfamilies, and kil the Passover victim.
Then take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and with the blood from the basintouch the lintel and both door-posts; then let none of you venture out of the house til morning.
Then, when Yahweh goes through Egypt to strike it, and sees the blood on the lintel and on bothdoor-posts, he wil pass over the door and not al ow the Destroyer to enter your homes and strike.
Custodi verbum istud legitimum tibi et filiis tuis usque in æternum.24 You wil observe this as a decree binding you and your children for al time,
Cumque introieritis terram, quam Dominus daturus est vobis ut pollicitus est, observabitis cæremonias istas.25 and when you have entered the country which Yahweh will give you, as he has promised, you wilobserve this ritual.
Et cum dixerint vobis filii vestri : Quæ est ista religio ?26 And when your children ask you, "What does this ritual mean?"
Dicetis eis : Victima transitus Domini est, quando transivit super domos filiorum Israël in Ægypto, percutiens Ægyptios, et domos nostras liberans. Incurvatusque populus adoravit.27 you will tel them, "It is the Passover sacrifice in honour of Yahweh who passed over the houses ofthe Israelites in Egypt, and struck Egypt but spared our houses." ' And the people bowed in worship.
Et egressi filii Israël fecerunt sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi et Aaron.
The Israelites then went away and did as Yahweh had ordered Moses and Aaron.
And at midnight Yahweh struck down al the first-born in Egypt from the first-born of Pharaoh, heir tohis throne, to the first-born of the prisoner in the dungeon, and the first-born of all the livestock.
Pharaoh and al his officials and al the Egyptians got up in the night, and there was great wailing inEgypt, for there was not a house without its dead.
Vocatisque Pharao Moyse et Aaron nocte, ait : Surgite et egredimini a populo meo, vos et filii Israël : ite, immolate Domino sicut dicitis.31 It was stil dark when Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, 'Up, leave my subjects, youand the Israelites! Go and worship Yahweh as you have asked!
Oves vestras et armenta assumite ut petieratis, et abeuntes benedicite mihi.32 And take your flocks and herds as you have asked, and go! And bless me too!'
Urgebantque Ægyptii populum de terra exire velociter, dicentes : Omnes moriemur.33 The Egyptians urged the people on and hurried them out of the country because, they said,'Otherwise we shal al be dead.'
Tulit igitur populus conspersam farinam antequam fermentaretur : et ligans in palliis, posuit super humeros suos.34 So the people carried off their dough stil unleavened, their bowls wrapped in their cloaks, on theirshoulders.
Feceruntque filii Israël sicut præceperat Moyses : et petierunt ab Ægyptiis vasa argentea et aurea, vestemque plurimam.35 The Israelites did as Moses had told them and asked the Egyptians for silver and golden jewel ery,and clothing.
Yahweh made the Egyptians so much impressed with the people that they gave them what theyasked. So they despoiled the Egyptians.
Profectique sunt filii Israël de Ramesse in Socoth, sexcenta fere millia peditum virorum, absque parvulis.37 The Israelites left Rameses for Succoth, about six hundred thousand on the march-men, that is, notcounting their families.
Sed et vulgus promiscuum innumerabile ascendit cum eis, oves et armenta et animantia diversi generis multa nimis.38 A mixed crowd of people went with them, and flocks and herds, quantities of livestock.
And with the dough which they had brought from Egypt they baked unleavened cakes, because thedough had not risen, since they had been driven out of Egypt without time to linger or to prepare food forthemselves.
Habitatio autem filiorum Israël qua manserunt in Ægypto, fuit quadringentorum triginta annorum.40 The time that the Israelites spent in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years.
Quibus expletis, eadem die egressus est omnis exercitus Domini de terra Ægypti.41 And on the very day the four hundred and thirty years ended, al Yahweh's armies left Egypt.
Nox ista est observabilis Domini, quando eduxit eos de terra Ægypti : hanc observare debent omnes filii Israël in generationibus suis.
The night when Yahweh kept vigil to bring them out of Egypt must be kept as a vigil in honour ofYahweh by al Israelites, for al generations.
Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron : Hæc est religio Phase : omnis alienigena non comedet ex eo.43 Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron, 'This is the ritual for the Passover: no alien may eat it,
Omnis autem servus emptitius circumcidetur, et sic comedet.44 but any slave bought for money may eat it, once you have circumcised him.
Advena et mercenarius non edent ex eo.45 No stranger and no hired servant may eat it.
In una domo comedetur, nec efferetis de carnibus ejus foras, nec os illius confringetis.46 It must be eaten in one house alone; you wil not take any of the meat out of the house; nor may youbreak any of its bones.
Omnis c?tus filiorum Israël faciet illud.47 'The whole community of Israel must keep it.
Quod si quis peregrinorum in vestram voluerit transire coloniam, et facere Phase Domini, circumcidetur prius omne masculinum ejus, et tunc rite celebrabit : eritque sicut indigena terræ : si quis autem circumcisus non fuerit, non vescetur ex eo.48 Should a stranger residing with you wish to keep the Passover in honour of Yahweh, al the males ofhis household must be circumcised: he wil then be al owed to keep it and wil count as a citizen of the country. But no uncircumcised person may eat it.
Eadem lex erit indigenæ et colono qui peregrinatur apud vos.49 The same law will apply to the citizen and the stranger resident among you.'
Feceruntque omnes filii Israël sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi et Aaron.50 The Israelites all did as Yahweh had ordered Moses and Aaron,
Et eadem die eduxit Dominus filios Israël de terra Ægypti per turmas suas.51 and that same day Yahweh brought the Israelites out of Egypt in their armies.
