1 Factum est autem, postquam mortuus est Saul, ut David reverteretur a cæde Amalec, et maneret in Siceleg duos dies.	1 After the death of Saul, David returned from his defeat of the Amalekites and spent two days in Ziklag.
2 In die autem tertia apparuit homo veniens de castris Saul veste conscissa, et pulvere conspersus caput : et ut venit ad David, cecidit super faciem suam, et adoravit.	2 On the third day a man came from Saul's camp, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. Going to David, he fell to the ground in homage.
3 Dixitque ad eum David : Unde venis ? Qui ait ad eum : De castris Israël fugi.	3 David asked him, "Where do you come from?" He replied, "I have escaped from the Israelite camp."
4 Et dixit ad eum David : Quod est verbum quod factum est ? indica mihi. Qui ait : Fugit populus ex prælio, et multi corruentes e populo mortui sunt : sed et Saul et Jonathas filius ejus interierunt.	4 "Tell me what happened," David bade him. He answered that the soldiers had fled the battle and that many of them had fallen and were dead, among them Saul and his son Jonathan.
5 Dixitque David ad adolescentem qui nuntiabat ei : Unde scis quia mortuus est Saul, et Jonathas filius ejus ?	5 Then David said to the youth who was reporting to him, "How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?"
6 Et ait adolescens qui nuntiabat ei : Casu veni in montem Gelboë, et Saul incumbebat super hastam suam : porro currus et equites appropinquabant ei,	6 The youthful informant replied: "It was by chance that I found myself on Mount Gilboa and saw Saul leaning on his spear, with chariots and horsemen closing in on him.
7 et conversus post tergum suum, vidensque me, vocavit. Cui cum respondissem : Adsum :	7 He turned around and, seeing me, called me to him. When I said, 'Here I am,'
8 dixit mihi : Quisnam es tu ? Et aio ad eum : Amalecites ego sum.	8 he asked me, 'Who are you?' and I replied, 'An Amalekite.'
9 Et locutus est mihi : Sta super me, et interfice me : quoniam tenent me angustiæ, et adhuc tota anima mea in me est.	9 Then he said to me, 'Stand up to me, please, and finish me off, for I am in great suffering, yet fully alive.'
10 Stansque super eum, occidi illum : sciebam enim quod vivere non poterat post ruinam : et tuli diadema quod erat in capite ejus, et armillam de brachio illius, et attuli ad te dominum meum huc.	10 So I stood up to him and dispatched him, for I knew that he could not survive his wound. I removed the crown from his head and the armlet from his arm and brought them here to my lord."
11 Apprehendens autem David, vestimenta sua scidit, omnesque viri qui erant cum eo,	11 David seized his garments and rent them, and all the men who were with him did likewise.
12 et planxerunt, et fleverunt, et jejunaverunt usque ad vesperam super Saul, et super Jonathan filium ejus, et super populum Domini, et super domum Israël, eo quod corruissent gladio.	12 They mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the soldiers of the LORD of the clans of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
13 Dixitque David ad juvenem qui nuntiaverat ei : Unde es tu ? Qui respondit : Filius hominis advenæ Amalecitæ ego sum.	13 Then David said to the young man who had brought him the information, "Where are you from?" He replied, "I am the son of an Amalekite immigrant."
14 Et ait ad eum David : Quare non timuisti mittere manum tuam ut occideres christum Domini ?	14 David said to him, "How is it that you were not afraid to put forth your hand to desecrate the LORD'S anointed?"
15 Vocansque David unum de pueris suis, ait : Accedens irrue in eum. Qui percussit illum, et mortuus est.	15 David then called one of the attendants and said to him, "Come, strike him down"; and the youth struck him a mortal blow.
16 Et ait ad eum David : Sanguis tuus super caput tuum : os enim tuum locutum est adversum te, dicens : Ego interfeci christum Domini.	16 Meanwhile David said to him, "You are responsible for your own death, for you testified against yourself when you said, 'I dispatched the LORD'S anointed.'"
17 Planxit autem David planctum hujuscemodi super Saul, et super Jonathan filium ejus	17 Then David chanted this elegy for Saul and his son Jonathan,
18 (et præcepit ut docerent filios Juda arcum, sicut scriptum est in libro justorum), et ait : Considera, Israël, pro his qui mortui sunt, super excelsa tua vulnerati.	18 which is recorded in the Book of Jashar to be taught to the Judahites. He sang:
19 Inclyti Israël super montes tuos interfecti sunt : quomodo ceciderunt fortes ?	19 "Alas! the glory of Israel, Saul, slain upon your heights; how can the warriors have fallen!
20 Nolite annuntiare in Geth, neque annuntietis in compitis Ascalonis : ne forte lætentur filiæ Philisthiim ; ne exultent filiæ incircumcisorum.	20 "Tell it not in Gath, herald it not in the streets of Ashkelon, Lest the Philistine maidens rejoice, lest the daughters of the strangers exult!
21 Montes Gelboë, nec ros, nec pluvia veniant super vos, neque sint agri primitiarum : quia ibi abjectus est clypeus fortium : clypeus Saul, quasi non esset unctus oleo.	21 Mountains of Gilboa, may there be neither dew nor rain upon you, nor upsurgings of the deeps! Upon you lie begrimed the warriors' shields, the shield of Saul, no longer anointed with oil.
22 A sanguine interfectorum, ab adipe fortium, sagitta Jonathæ numquam rediit retrorsum, et gladius Saul non est reversus inanis.	22 "From the blood of the slain, from the bodies of the valiant, The bow of Jonathan did not turn back, or the sword of Saul return unstained.
23 Saul et Jonathas amabiles, et decori in vita sua, in morte quoque non sunt divisi : aquilis velociores, leonibus fortiores.	23 Saul and Jonathan, beloved and cherished, separated neither in life nor in death, swifter than eagles, stronger than lions!
24 Filiæ Israël, super Saul flete, qui vestiebat vos coccino in deliciis, qui præbebat ornamenta aurea cultui vestro.	24 Women of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet and in finery, who decked your attire with ornaments of gold.
25 Quomodo ceciderunt fortes in prælio ? Jonathas in excelsis tuis occisus est ?	25 "How can the warriors have fallen-- in the thick of the battle, slain upon your heights!
26 Doleo super te, frater mi Jonatha, decore nimis, et amabilis super amorem mulierum. Sicut mater unicum amat filium suum, ita ego te diligebam.	26 "I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother! most dear have you been to me; More precious have I held love for you than love for women.
27 Quomodo ceciderunt robusti, et perierunt arma bellica ?	27 "How can the warriors have fallen, the weapons of war have perished!"
