Genesis 32

VULGATA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Jacob quoque abiit itinere quo c?perat : fueruntque ei obviam angeli Dei.	1 Early next morning, Laban kissed his grandchildren and daughters and blessed them. Then Laban leftto return home.
2 Quos cum vidisset, ait : Castra Dei sunt hæc : et appellavit nomen loci illius Mahanaim, id est, Castra.	2 While Jacob was going on his way, angels of God encountered him,
3 Misit autem et nuntios ante se ad Esau fratrem suum in terram Seir, in regionem Edom :	3 and on seeing them he said, 'This is God's camp,' and he named the place Mahanaim.
4 præcepitque eis, dicens : Sic loquimini domino meo Esau : Hæc dicit frater tuus Jacob : Apud Laban peregrinatus sum, et fui usque in præsentem diem.	4 Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in Seir, the open country of Edom,
5 Habeo boves, et asinos, et oves, et servos, et ancillas : mittoque nunc legationem ad dominum meum, ut inveniam gratiam in conspectu tuo.	5 with these instructions, 'Say this to my lord Esau, "Here is the message of your servant Jacob: I havebeen staying with Laban and have been delayed there until now,
6 Reversique sunt nuntii ad Jacob, dicentes : Venimus ad Esau fratrem tuum, et ecce properat tibi in occursum cum quadringentis viris.	6 and I own oxen, beasts of burden and flocks, and men and women slaves. I send news of this to mylord in the hope of winning your favour." '
7 Timuit Jacob valde : et perterritus divisit populum qui secum erat, greges quoque et oves, et boves, et camelos, in duas turmas,	7 The messengers returned to Jacob and told him, 'We went to your brother Esau, and he is already onhis way to meet you; there are four hundred men with him.'
8 dicens : Si venerit Esau ad unam turmam, et percusserit eam, alia turma, quæ relicta est, salvabitur.	8 Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people with him, and the flocks and cattle,into two camps,
9 Dixitque Jacob : Deus patris mei Abraham, et Deus patris mei Isaac : Domine qui dixisti mihi : Revertere in terram tuam, et in locum nativitatis tuæ, et benefaciam tibi :	9 thinking, 'If Esau comes to one of the camps and attacks it, the remaining camp may be able toescape.'
10 minor sum cunctis miserationibus tuis, et veritate tua quam explevisti servo tuo. In baculo meo transivi Jordanem istum : et nunc cum duabus turmis regredior.	10 Jacob said, 'God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh who told me, "Go backto your native land and I will be good to you,"
11 Erue me de manu fratris mei Esau, quia valde eum timeo : ne forte veniens percutiat matrem cum filiis.	11 I am unworthy of al the faithful love and constancy you have shown your servant. I had only my staffwhen I crossed this Jordan, and now I have grown into two camps.
12 Tu locutus es quod benefaceres mihi, et dilatares semen meum sicut arenam maris, quæ præ multitudine numerari non potest.	12 I implore you, save me from my brother Esau's clutches, for I am afraid that he may come and attackme, mothers and children alike.
13 Cumque dormisset ibi nocte illa, separavit de his quæ habebat, munera Esau fratri suo,	13 Yet it was you who said, "I shal be very good to you, and make your descendants like the sand ofthe sea, which is too numerous to count." '
14 capras ducentas, hircos viginti, oves ducentas, et arietes viginti,	14 Then Jacob passed that night there. From what he had with him he chose a gift for his brother Esau:
15 camelos f?tas cum pullis suis triginta, vaccas quadraginta, et tauros viginti, asinas viginti et pullos earum decem.	15 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
16 Et misit per manus servorum suorum singulos seorsum greges, dixitque pueris suis : Antecedite me, et sit spatium inter gregem et gregem.	16 thirty camels in milk with their calves, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male.
17 Et præcepit priori, dicens : Si obvium habueris fratrem meum Esau, et interrogaverit te : Cujus es ? aut, Quo vadis ? aut, Cujus sunt ista quæ sequeris ?	17 He put them in the charge of his servants, in separate droves, and told his servants, 'Go ahead ofme, leaving a space between each drove and the next.'
18 respondebis : Servi tui Jacob, munera misit domino meo Esau, ipse quoque post nos venit.	18 He gave the leading man this order: 'When my brother Esau meets you and asks, "Whose man areyou? Where are you going? Whose are those animals that you are driving?"
19 Similiter dedit mandata secundo, et tertio, et cunctis qui sequebantur greges, dicens : Iisdem verbis loquimini ad Esau cum inveneritis eum.	19 you wil answer, "Your servant Jacob's. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau. And Jacob himself isjust behind us." '
20 Et addetis : Ipse quoque servus tuus Jacob iter nostrum insequitur. Dixit enim : Placabo illum muneribus quæ præcedunt, et postea videbo illum : forsitan propitiabitur mihi.	20 He gave the same order to the second and the third, and to al who were fol owing the droves. 'Thatis what you must say to Esau when you find him.
21 Præcesserunt itaque munera ante eum, ipse vero mansit nocte illa in castris.	21 And you must add, "Your servant Jacob himself is just behind us." ' For he thought, 'If I conciliate him by sending a gift in advance, perhaps he will be well inclined towards me when I face him.'
22 Cumque mature surrexisset, tulit duas uxores suas, et totidem famulas cum undecim filiis, et transivit vadum Jaboc.	22 The gift went ahead of him, but he himself spent that night in the camp.
23 Traductisque omnibus quæ ad se pertinebant,	23 That same night he got up and, taking his two wives, his two slave-girls and his eleven children,crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
24 mansit solus : et ecce vir luctabatur cum eo usque mane.	24 After he had taken them across the stream, he sent al his possessions over too.
25 Qui cum videret quod eum superare non posset, tetigit nervum femoris ejus, et statim emarcuit.	25 And Jacob was left alone. Then someone wrestled with him until daybreak
26 Dixitque ad eum : Dimitte me : jam enim ascendit aurora. Respondit : Non dimittam te, nisi benedixeris mihi.	26 who, seeing that he could not master him, struck him on the hip socket, and Jacob's hip wasdislocated as he wrestled with him.
27 Ait ergo : Quod nomen est tibi ? Respondit : Jacob.	27 He said, 'Let me go, for day is breaking.' Jacob replied, 'I wil not let you go unless you bless me.'
28 At ille : Nequaquam, inquit, Jacob appellabitur nomen tuum, sed Israël : quoniam si contra Deum fortis fuisti, quanto magis contra homines prævalebis ?	28 The other said, 'What is your name?' 'Jacob,' he replied.
29 Interrogavit eum Jacob : Dic mihi, quo appellaris nomine ? Respondit : Cur quæris nomen meum ? Et benedixit ei in eodem loco.	29 He said, 'No longer are you to be cal ed Jacob, but Israel since you have shown your strengthagainst God and men and have prevailed.'
30 Vocavitque Jacob nomen loci illius Phanuel, dicens : Vidi Deum facie ad faciem, et salva facta est anima mea.	30 Then Jacob asked, 'Please tel me your name.' He replied, 'Why do you ask my name?' With that, heblessed him there.
31 Ortusque est ei statim sol, postquam transgressus est Phanuel : ipse vero claudicabat pede.	31 Jacob named the place Peniel, 'Because I have seen God face to face,' he said, 'and have survived.'
32 Quam ob causam non comedunt nervum filii Israël, qui emarcuit in femore Jacob, usque in præsentem diem : eo quod tetigerit nervum femoris ejus, et obstupuerit.	32 The sun rose as he passed Peniel, limping from his hip.
	33 That is why to this day the Israelites do not eat the thigh sinew which is at the hip socket: because hehad struck Jacob at the hip socket on the thigh sinew.
