VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Igitur perfecti sunt cæli et terra, et omnis ornatus eorum.1 Thus heaven and earth were completed with al their array.
On the seventh day God had completed the work he had been doing. He rested on the seventh dayafter al the work he had been doing.
God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on that day he rested after al his work ofcreating.
Such was the story of heaven and earth as they were created. At the time when Yahweh God madeearth and heaven
et omne virgultum agri antequam oriretur in terra, omnemque herbam regionis priusquam germinaret : non enim pluerat Dominus Deus super terram, et homo non erat qui operaretur terram :5 there was as yet no wild bush on the earth nor had any wild plant yet sprung up, for Yahweh God hadnot sent rain on the earth, nor was there any man to til the soil.
sed fons ascendebat e terra, irrigans universam superficiem terræ.6 Instead, water flowed out of the ground and watered al the surface of the soil.
Formavit igitur Dominus Deus hominem de limo terræ, et inspiravit in faciem ejus spiraculum vitæ, et factus est homo in animam viventem.7 Yahweh God shaped man from the soil of the ground and blew the breath of life into his nostrils, andman became a living being.
Plantaverat autem Dominus Deus paradisum voluptatis a principio, in quo posuit hominem quem formaverat.8 Yahweh God planted a garden in Eden, which is in the east, and there he put the man he hadfashioned.
Produxitque Dominus Deus de humo omne lignum pulchrum visu, et ad vescendum suave lignum etiam vitæ in medio paradisi, lignumque scientiæ boni et mali.9 From the soil, Yahweh God caused to grow every kind of tree, enticing to look at and good to eat, withthe tree of life in the middle of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Et fluvius egrediebatur de loco voluptatis ad irrigandum paradisum, qui inde dividitur in quatuor capita.10 A river flowed from Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided to make four streams.
Nomen uni Phison : ipse est qui circuit omnem terram Hevilath, ubi nascitur aurum :11 The first is named the Pishon, and this winds al through the land of Havilah where there is gold.
et aurum terræ illius optimum est ; ibi invenitur bdellium, et lapis onychinus.12 The gold of this country is pure; bdel ium and cornelian stone are found there.
Et nomen fluvii secundi Gehon ; ipse est qui circumit omnem terram Æthiopiæ.13 The second river is named the Gihon, and this winds all through the land of Cush.
Nomen vero fluminis tertii, Tigris : ipse vadit contra Assyrios. Fluvius autem quartus, ipse est Euphrates.14 The third river is named the Tigris, and this flows to the east of Ashur. The fourth river is theEuphrates.
Tulit ergo Dominus Deus hominem, et posuit eum in paradiso voluptatis, ut operaretur, et custodiret illum :15 Yahweh God took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden to cultivate and take care of it.
præcepitque ei, dicens : Ex omni ligno paradisi comede ;16 Then Yahweh God gave the man this command, 'You are free to eat of al the trees in the garden.
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you are not to eat; for, the day you eat of that, youare doomed to die.'
Dixit quoque Dominus Deus : Non est bonum esse hominem solum : faciamus ei adjutorium simile sibi.18 Yahweh God said, 'It is not right that the man should be alone. I shal make him a helper.'
So from the soil Yahweh God fashioned al the wild animals and al the birds of heaven. These hebrought to the man to see what he would call them; each one was to bear the name the man would give it.
Appellavitque Adam nominibus suis cuncta animantia, et universa volatilia cæli, et omnes bestias terræ : Adæ vero non inveniebatur adjutor similis ejus.20 The man gave names to al the cattle, al the birds of heaven and all the wild animals. But no helpersuitable for the man was found for him.
Immisit ergo Dominus Deus soporem in Adam : cumque obdormisset, tulit unam de costis ejus, et replevit carnem pro ea.21 Then, Yahweh God made the man fal into a deep sleep. And, while he was asleep, he took one of hisribs and closed the flesh up again forthwith.
Et ædificavit Dominus Deus costam, quam tulerat de Adam, in mulierem : et adduxit eam ad Adam.22 Yahweh God fashioned the rib he had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man.
Dixitque Adam : Hoc nunc os ex ossibus meis, et caro de carne mea : hæc vocabitur Virago, quoniam de viro sumpta est.23 And the man said: This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh! She is to be cal edWoman, because she was taken from Man.
Quam ob rem relinquet homo patrem suum, et matrem, et adhærebit uxori suæ : et erunt duo in carne una.24 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and they becomeone flesh.
Erat autem uterque nudus, Adam scilicet et uxor ejus : et non erubescebant.25 Now, both of them were naked, the man and his wife, but they felt no shame before each other.
