1 Il re dell'Egitto radunò truppe, numerose come la rena che è sulla riva del mare, e navi in quantità, volendo impadronirsi con astuzia del regno di Alessandro per annetterlo al suo proprio regno.	1 The king of Egypt then assembled an army as numerous as the sands of the seashore, with manyships, and set out to take possession of Alexander's kingdom by a ruse and add it to his own kingdom.
2 Si mosse alla volta della Siria con parole di pace e gli abitanti delle città gli aprivano le porte e gli andavano incontro, perché il re Alessandro, essendo suo suocero, aveva ordinato di andargli incontro.	2 He set off for Syria with protestations of peace, and the people of the towns opened their gates to himand came out to meet him, since King Alexander's orders were to welcome him, Ptolemy being his father-in-law.
3 Tolomeo, però, una volta entrato nelle città, lasciava in ognuna le sue truppe per custodirle.	3 On entering the towns, however, Ptolemy quartered troops as a garrison in each one.
4 Quando giunse ad Asdòd, gli mostrarono il tempio di Dagon incendiato, Asdòd stessa e i suoi sobborghi distrutti, i cadaveri abbandonati e i resti di quelli che Gionata aveva fatto bruciare in guerra: di questi, infatti, ne avevano fatto dei mucchi lungo il suo percorso.	4 When he reached Azotus he was shown the burnt-out temple of Dagon, with Azotus and its suburbsin ruins, corpses scattered here and there, and the charred remains of those whom Jonathan had burnt to deathin the battle, piled into heaps along his route.
5 Gli raccontarono pure quanto aveva fatto Gionata, pensando che egli lo avrebbe biasimato, ma il re tacque.	5 They explained to the king what Jonathan had done, hoping for his disapproval; but the king saidnothing.
6 Gionata, con grande pompa, andò ad incontrare il re a Giaffa; si salutarono l'un l'altro e passarono la notte là.	6 Jonathan went in state to meet the king at Joppa, where they greeted each other and spent the night.
7 Gionata poi andò con il re fino al fiume chiamato Elèutero e quindi se ne tornò a Gerusalemme.	7 Jonathan accompanied the king as far as the river called Eleutherus, and then returned to Jerusalem.
8 Il re Tolomeo divenne così padrone delle città del litorale fino a Seleucia marittima, mentre meditava cattivi progetti ai danni di Alessandro.	8 King Ptolemy for his part occupied the coastal towns as far as Seleucia on the coast, al the whilematuring his wicked designs against Alexander.
9 Egli poi inviò degli ambasciatori al re Demetrio e gli fece dire: "Vieni, facciamo alleanza tra noi. Ti darò mia figlia che Alessandro ha in moglie e regnerai nel regno di tuo padre.	9 He sent envoys to King Demetrius to say, 'Come and let us make a treaty; I shall give you mydaughter, whom Alexander now has, and you shal rule your father's kingdom.
10 Io, infatti, mi sono pentito di avergli dato mia figlia, poiché egli tentò di uccidermi".	10 I regret having given my daughter to that man, since he has tried to kil me.'
11 In realtà egli lo biasimava perché bramava impossessarsi del suo regno.	11 He made this accusation because he coveted his kingdom.
12 Quindi, toltagli sua figlia, la diede a Demetrio. In questo modo si separò da Alessandro e la loro inimicizia si fece manifesta.	12 Having carried off his daughter and bestowed her on Demetrius, he broke with Alexander, and theirenmity became open.
13 Tolomeo poi entrò in Antiochia e vi cinse il diadema dell'Asia: pose sulla sua testa due diademi, quello dell'Egitto e quello dell'Asia.	13 Ptolemy next entered Antioch and assumed the crown of Asia; he now wore on his head the twocrowns of Egypt and Asia.
14 Il re Alessandro in quei giorni era in Cilicia, perché gli abitanti di quelle zone gli si erano ribellati.	14 King Alexander was in Cilicia at the time, since the people of those parts had risen in revolt,
15 Quando Alessandro fu informato di ciò, marciò contro di lui in guerra; ma Tolomeo, uscito fuori, gli mosse contro con grande potenza e lo mise in fuga.	15 but when he heard the news, he advanced on his rival to give battle, while Ptolemy for his part alsotook the field, met him with a strong force and routed him.
16 Alessandro fuggì in Arabia per trovarvi riparo; il re Tolomeo invece fu glorificato.	16 Alexander fled to Arabia for refuge, and King Ptolemy reigned supreme.
17 L'arabo Zabdiel mozzò la testa di Alessandro e l'inviò a Tolomeo.	17 Zabdiel the Arab cut off Alexander's head and sent it to Ptolemy.
18 Ma tre giorni dopo anche il re Tolomeo morì e i suoi uomini che erano nelle fortezze furono uccisi dagli altri che erano nelle fortezze stesse.	18 Three days later King Ptolemy died, and the Egyptian garrisons in the strongholds were kil ed by thelocal inhabitants.
19 Così Demetrio incominciò a regnare nell'anno 16 7.	19 So Demetrius became king in the year 167.
20 In quei giorni Gionata radunò gli uomini della Giudea per attaccare l'Acra che era in Gerusalemme, e fece fare molte macchine militari per usarle contro di essa.	20 At the same time, Jonathan mustered the men of Judaea for an assault on the Citadel of Jerusalem,and they set up numerous siege-engines against it.
21 Allora alcuni uomini iniqui, che odiavano la propria gente, andarono dal re e gli riferirono che Gionata assediava l'Acra.	21 But some renegades who hated their nation made their way to the king and told him that Jonathanwas besieging the Citadel.
22 Udito ciò, il re si adirò e, avutane conferma, levò subito il campo e si recò a Tolemaide e scrisse a Gionata di togliere l'assedio e di andargli incontro al più presto a Tolemaide per conferire con lui.	22 The king was angered by the news. No sooner had he been informed than he set out and came toPtolemais. He wrote to Jonathan, tel ing him to raise the siege and to meet him for a conference in Ptolemais assoon as possible.
23 Udito ciò, Gionata comandò di continuare l'assedio; poi, scelti alcuni anziani d'Israele e sacerdoti, affrontò il pericolo.	23 When Jonathan heard this, he gave orders for the siege to continue; he then selected a deputationfrom the elders of Israel and the priests, and took the deliberate risk
24 Preso argento, oro, vestiti e molti altri doni, si recò dal re a Tolemaide e trovò grazia presso di lui.	24 of himself taking silver and gold, clothing and numerous other presents, and going to Ptolemais toface the king, whose favour he succeeded in winning;
25 Alcuni empi della sua nazione tentarono di intervenire contro di lui,	25 and although one or two renegades of his nation brought charges against him,
26 ma il re lo trattò come lo avevano trattato i suoi predecessori e lo esaltò davanti a tutti i suoi amici.	26 the king treated him as his predecessors had treated him, and promoted him in the presence of alhis friends.
27 Gli confermò il sommo sacerdozio e tutte le altre dignità che aveva per l'innanzi e volle che fosse annoverato tra i primi amici.	27 He confirmed him in the high-priesthood and whatever other distinctions he already held, and hadhim ranked among the First Friends.
28 Gionata chiese al re di rendere la Giudea esente dalle imposte, al pari delle tre toparchie e della Samaria, promettendogli trecento talenti.	28 Jonathan asked the king to exempt Judaea and the three Samaritan districts from taxation,promising him three hundred talents in return.
29 Il re accondiscese e scrisse a Gionata, intorno a tutte queste cose, lettere così concepite:	29 The king consented, and wrote Jonathan a rescript covering the whole matter, in these terms:
30 "Re Demetrio al fratello Gionata e alla nazione dei Giudei, salute!	30 'King Demetrius to Jonathan his brother, and to the Jewish nation, greetings.
31 Una copia della lettera che abbiamo scritta a Làstene, nostro parente, a vostro riguardo, la scriviamo anche per voi affinché ne prendiate conoscenza.	31 'We have written to Lasthenes our cousin concerning you, and now send you this copy of ourrescript for your own information:
32 Il re Demetrio al padre Làstene, salute!	32 "King Demetrius to his father Lasthenes, greetings.
33 Alla nazione dei Giudei, che sono nostri amici e osservano ciò che è giusto verso di noi, abbiamo giudicato opportuno far loro del bene in ragione dei buoni sentimenti che hanno per noi.	33 "The nation of the Jews is our al y; they fulfil their obligations to us, and in view of their goodwilltowards us we have decided to show them our bounty.
34 Pertanto confermiamo loro il possesso dei territori della Giudea e dei tre distretti di Afèrema, Lidda e Ramatàim. Essi, con le loro dipendenze, dalla Samaria furono annessi alla Giudea a favore di tutti quelli che offrono sacrifici in Gerusalemme, in compenso delle imposte regali che il re prendeva da essi per l'innanzi ogni anno, sui prodotti della terra e sui frutti degli alberi.	34 We confirm them in their possession of the territory of Judaea and the three districts of Aphairema,Lydda and Ramathaim; these were annexed to Judaea from Samaritan territory, with al their dependencies, infavour of al who offer sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the royal dues which the king formerly received fromthem every year, from the yield of the soil and the fruit crops.
35 Quanto agli altri diritti che abbiamo sulle decime e sui tributi che ci si devono, sulle saline e le corone che ci erano dovute, da questo momento vi rinunziamo completamente.	35 As regards our other rights over the tithes and taxes due to us, over the salt marshes, and the crowntaxes due to us, as from today we release them from them al .
36 Nessuna di queste disposizioni sarà revocata a partire da questo momento e per sempre.	36 None of these grants will be revoked henceforth or anywhere.
37 Abbiate dunque cura di fare una copia della presente e di consegnarla a Gionata affinché sia collocata sul monte santo in luogo ben visibile".	37 You wil make yourself responsible for having a copy of this made, to be given to Jonathan anddisplayed on the holy mountain in a conspicuous place." '
38 Il re Demetrio, vedendo che il paese era calmo davanti a lui e che nessuno gli si opponeva, licenziò tutte le sue truppe, ognuno al proprio paese, ad eccezione delle truppe straniere, che egli aveva reclutato dalle isole delle nazioni. Allora tutte le truppe che erano state con i suoi padri incominciarono ad osteggiarlo.	38 When King Demetrius saw that the country was at peace under his rule and that no resistance wasoffered him, he dismissed his forces, and sent al the men home, except for the foreign troops that he hadrecruited in the foreign island, thus incurring the enmity of the veterans who had served his ancestors.
39 Trifone ch'era stato per l'innanzi dalla parte di Alessandro, vedendo che tutte le truppe mormoravano contro Demetrio, si recò presso l'arabo Imalcue, che allevava Antioco, il giovane figlio di Alessandro,	39 Now Trypho, one of Alexander's former supporters, noting that al the troops were muttering againstDemetrius, went to see Iamleku, the Arab who was bringing up Antiochus, Alexander's young son,
40 e lo circuiva affinché glielo consegnasse per farlo regnare al posto di suo padre. Gli parlò pure delle cose che Demetrio aveva ordinato e dell'inimicizia che i suoi soldati nutrivano per lui; e rimase lì per molti giorni.	40 and repeatedly urged him to let him have the boy, so that he might succeed his father as king; hetold him of Demetrius' decision and of the resentment it had aroused among his troops. He spent a long timethere.
41 Gionata mandò a chiedere al re Demetrio di rimuovere da Gerusalemme gli uomini che erano nell'Acra e gli altri che erano nelle fortezze, perché facevano guerra a Israele.	41 Jonathan, meanwhile, sent to ask King Demetrius to withdraw the garrisons from the Citadel inJerusalem and from the other fortresses, since they were constantly fighting Israel.
42 Demetrio però mandò a dire a Gionata: "Non solo questo farò per te e per la tua nazione, ma colmerò di onori te e la tua nazione, appena mi si presenti la buona occasione.	42 Demetrius sent word back to Jonathan, 'Not only wil I do this for you and for your nation, but I shalheap honours on you and your nation if I find a favourable opportunity.
43 Ora però farai bene a inviarmi uomini che combattano con me, poiché tutte le truppe mi si sono allontanate".	43 For the present, you would do wel to send me reinforcements, since al my troops have deserted.'
44 Gionata gli inviò in Antiochia tremila uomini molto valorosi e, quando questi giunsero presso il re, il re si rallegrò per il loro arrivo.	44 Jonathan sent three thousand experienced soldiers to him in Antioch; when they reached the king,he was delighted at their arrival.
45 Gli abitanti della città si radunarono al centro della città in numero di circa centoventimila e volevano eliminare il re.	45 The citizens crowded together in the centre of the city, to the number of some hundred and twentythousand, intending to kil the king.
46 Il re però si rifugiò nel palazzo, mentre gli abitanti della città invadevano le vie della città e incominciavano a combattere.	46 The king took refuge in the palace, while the citizens occupied the thoroughfares of the city andbegan to attack.
47 Il re allora chiamò in soccorso i Giudei e questi si radunarono presso di lui tutti insieme; poi si dispersero per la città e ne uccisero, in quel giorno, circa centomila.	47 The king then cal ed on the Jews for help; and these al ral ied round him, then fanned out throughthe city, and that day kil ed about a hundred thousand of its inhabitants.
48 Diedero fuoco alla città, raccolsero molte spoglie in quel giorno e salvarono il re.	48 They fired the city, seizing a great deal of plunder at the same time, and secured the king's safety.
49 Ora gli abitanti della città, quando videro che i Giudei si erano impadroniti della città a loro piacimento, si persero d'animo e incominciarono ad elevare suppliche al re dicendo:	49 When the citizens saw that the Jews had the city at their mercy, their courage failed them, and theymade an abject appeal to the king,
50 "Dacci la destra e cessino i Giudei di combattere contro di noi e contro la città!".	50 'Give us the right hand of peace, and let the Jews stop their fight against us and the city.'
51 Deposero le armi e fecero la pace. Così i Giudei si coprirono di gloria davanti al re e a tutti i cittadini del suo regno e ritornarono a Gerusalemme con molte spoglie.	51 They threw down their arms and made peace. The Jews were covered in glory, in the eyes of theking and of everyone else in his kingdom. Having won renown in his kingdom, they returned to Jerusalem ladenwith booty.
52 In questo modo il re Demetrio poté sedersi sul trono del suo regno e il paese rimase tranquillo sotto di lui.	52 Thus, King Demetrius sat al the more securely on his royal throne, and the country was quiet underhis government.
53 Egli poi, però, rinnegò tutto ciò che aveva promesso, si mostrò ostile a Gionata e non ricambiò i favori che questi gli aveva reso; anzi incominciò a vessarlo duramente.	53 But he gave the lie to all the promises he had made, and changed his attitude to Jonathan, givingnothing in return for the services Jonathan had rendered him, but thwarting him at every turn.
54 Dopo queste cose, Trifone ritornò con Antioco, ancora molto giovane. Incominciò a regnare e cinse il diadema.	54 After this, Trypho came back with the little boy Antiochus, who became king and was crowned.
55 Si radunarono attorno a lui tutte le truppe che Demetrio aveva congedato e combatterono contro costui, il quale fu messo in fuga e travolto,	55 Al the troops that Demetrius had summarily dismissed rallied to Antiochus, and made war onDemetrius, who turned tail and fled.
56 mentre Trifone catturò gli elefanti e si impadronì di Antiochia.	56 Trypho captured the elephants and seized Antioch.
57 Il giovanetto Antioco scrisse a Gionata dicendogli: "Ti confermo il sommo sacerdozio, ti pongo a capo dei quattro distretti e ti annovero tra gli amici del re".	57 Young Antiochus then wrote as fol ows to Jonathan: 'I confirm you in the high-priesthood and set youover the four districts and appoint you one of the Friends of the King.'
58 Gl'inviò vasellame d'oro e un servizio da tavola, gli diede facoltà di bere in vasi d'oro, d'indossare la porpora e di portare una fibbia d'oro.	58 He sent him a service of gold plate, and granted him the right to drink from gold vessels, and to wearthe purple and the golden brooch.
59 Inoltre costituì suo fratello Simone stratega dalla Scala di Tiro sino ai confini dell'Egitto.	59 He appointed his brother Simon commander-in-chief of the region from the Ladder of Tyre to thefrontiers of Egypt.
60 Gionata cominciò a percorrere la regione d'oltre il fiume e le varie città, e tutto l'esercito di Siria si unì a lui per combattere insieme. Andò ad Ascalòna e gli abitanti della città lo ricevettero con onore.	60 Jonathan then set out and made a progress through Transeuphrates and its towns, and the entireSyrian army rallied to his support. He came to Ascalon and was received in state by the inhabitants.
61 Di qui andò a Gaza; ma quelli di Gaza gli chiusero le porte. Allora egli l'assediò, incendiò i suoi sobborghi e li saccheggiò.	61 From there he proceeded to Gaza, but the people of Gaza shut him out, so he laid siege to it,burning down its suburbs and plundering them.
62 Quelli di Gaza allora supplicarono Gionata ed egli diede loro la destra in segno di pace; prese tuttavia come ostaggi i figli dei loro capi e li spedì a Gerusalemme. Quindi attraversò la regione fino a Damasco.	62 The people of Gaza then pleaded with Jonathan, and he made peace with them; but he took thesons of their chief men as hostages and sent them away to Jerusalem. He then travel ed through the country asfar as Damascus.
63 Ma poi, avendo saputo che i generali di Demetrio si trovavano a Cades in Galilea con un grande esercito e che volevano fargli abbandonare l'impresa,	63 Jonathan now learned that Demetrius' generals had arrived at Kadesh in Galilee with a large army,intending to remove him from office,
64 marciò contro di loro, lasciando suo fratello Simone nella regione.	64 and went to engage them, leaving his brother Simon inside the country.
65 Simone venne ad accamparsi sotto Bet-Zur e per molti giorni combatté contro di essa tenendola assediata.	65 Simon laid siege to Beth-Zur, attacking it day after day, and blockading the inhabitants
66 Lo supplicarono di accettare la loro destra ed egli acconsentì. Tuttavia li espulse di lì, occupò la città e vi pose una guarnigione.	66 til they sued for peace, which he granted them, though he expel ed them from the town andoccupied it, stationing a garrison there.
67 Gionata e il suo esercito, invece, andarono ad accamparsi presso le acque di Genesaret e di buon mattino giunsero nella pianura di Casòr.	67 Jonathan and his army, meanwhile, having pitched camp by the Lake of Gennesar, rose early, andby morning were already in the plain of Hazor.
68 Ed ecco che l'esercito degli stranieri stava loro davanti nella pianura, mentre altri organizzavano un'imboscata contro di lui sui monti. Quelli avanzarono frontalmente,	68 The foreigners' army advanced to fight them on the plain, having first positioned an ambush for himin the mountains. While the main body was advancing directly towards the Jews,
69 quando gl'imboscati, usciti dai loro luoghi, attaccarono battaglia.	69 the troops in ambush broke cover and attacked first.
70 Gli uomini di Gionata fuggirono, nessuno di loro rimase, all'infuori di Mattatia, figlio di Assalonne, e Giuda, figlio di Calfi, capi dell'esercito.	70 Al the men with Jonathan fled; no one was left, except Mattathias son of Absalom and Judas son ofChalphi, the generals of his army.
71 Gionata si stracciò le vesti, si cosparse il capo di polvere e pregò.	71 At this, Jonathan tore his garments, put dust on his head, and prayed.
72 Quindi si voltò contro i nemici combattendo, li mise in rotta e fuggirono.	72 Then he returned to the fight and routed the enemy, who fled.
73 Visto ciò, quelli che erano fuggiti tornarono da lui e con lui li inseguirono fino al loro accampamento a Cades. Quivi si accamparono.	73 When the fugitives from his own forces saw this, they came back to him and joined in the pursuit asfar as Kadesh where the enemy encampment was, and there they themselves pitched camp.
74 Gli stranieri caduti in quel giorno furono circa tremila uomini. Quindi Gionata fece ritorno a Gerusalemme.	74 About three thousand of the foreign troops fel that day. Jonathan then returned to Jerusalem.
